Whitby half term?

Earlgrey666 · 20/10/2020 16:05

We are booked to spend half term in Whitby in a self catering property. We are currently in a tier 2 area and trying to decide whether to go or not.

Does anyone live in Whitby or recently been? Is it very busy, things open etc?

Whitby is always busy and will be more so at halfterm.

Whitby goth weekend is not going ahead if that’s what you were going for.

Shops and the like will all be open though

We were there in mid September. Expecting it to be quiet as it was outside of school holidays but no - pretty busy! It’s obviously difficult to socially distance in some areas of the town. But most of the place we went to were well set up once inside, plenty of hand sanitiser, everyone was adhering to wearing masks...it was fine. Having said that, would expect half term to be even busier (assuming Yorkshire doesn’t go into Tier 3 which is on the cards).

Whitby has a GOTH WEEKEND?!!
Rinoachicken · 20/10/2020 16:20

Forgot to add that the organisers of Whitby Goth Weekend sent out a message last week asking people to stay away saying that “the people of the town are concerned that, despite no events running this Autumn 2020, there may still be a substantial inflow of visitors at a time with social distancing is paramount”

Rinoachicken · 20/10/2020 16:23

@VHSappy

😁😁😁😁😁 they actually have two!

They hold one every year around Halloween and it’s awesome, entertainment, love music, everyone is all gorged up to the max and the town has really taken the weekend to it’s heart. It’s fantastic.

It proved so successful that they then started holding a second weekend around Easter Time a few years back.

They’ve had a bit of a Covid spike in September, with 13 businesses behaving to close due to cases (hotels, pubs, shops, cafes etc)

Omg so many typos!

*LIVE music and GOTHED to the max!!

I would think as long as you stay out of the centre on the actual weekend you’ll be fine. Plenty of other things to do in the area.
The police were concerned lots of people would show up for the weekend that was meant to be Pickering WW2 weekend so they were planning to turn people away. I imagine they might be doing similar for Goth Weekend.

Earlgrey666 · 20/10/2020 21:08

Thanks for the replies. We weren't going for the goth weekend although it looks amazing! I am just nervous about how busy it will be. Obviously I'm not expecting it to be quiet but I have seen photos from Summer where the streets looked packed which worries me.

You would have been in for a bit of a shock then of goth weekend was going ahead and you didn’t know! 😂

I always find whitby town too busy and crowded. Not a chance I’d be going around the town centre, arcades or to whitby beach. But if you’re happy to stay there and drive a few miles then there are several other beaches and lovely walks, countryside that would be easier to social distance in.
