They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

Another vote for The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Fabulous book, a really interesting take on Dracula and would make a really great big budget series

SleepingStandingUp · 21/10/2020 09:54

@Bl3ss3dm0m

Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series - two have already been made into films, but sadly the actor who played the main character (Odd Thomas himself) has died. Although he is British, l think that Eddie Redmayne would make a great Odd Thomas! Apart from that, all the rest of Dean Koontz's books Grin
Ooh I've only seen one, need to find the other one.

It would make a better series than movie o think. But no to Eddy. He's nearly 40, far too old. Need a younger less known actor

foxtiger · 21/10/2020 10:01

The Norah Lofts "House" books, following all the different inhabitants of one house over several centuries.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/10/2020 10:02

Oh that would be beyond amazing Foxtiger (massive Norah Lofts fan).

Clawdy · 21/10/2020 10:07

The Good Earth was filmed in 1937, with neither of the two main roles played by Chinese actors! Time for a remake I think!

Osquito · 21/10/2020 10:08
  • I’d like to see Garth Nix’s Abhorsen books on tv - a good BBC production, I think.
  • Summer Crossing (Truman Capote) as a film, but I have such vivid imagery already in my head that I’m also afraid I’ll be totally disappointed.
Guy Gavriel Kay has also a couple of series that would be brilliant, if they managed to keep most of the beautiful little details in the storylines.
Osquito · 21/10/2020 10:10

Oh, and Robin Jarvis wrote a couple of things that would make wonderfully weird and fantastical (and scary!) series for tweens/teens/adults.

BinkyBoinky · 21/10/2020 10:20

I'd to see The Dovekeepers re-made into a better, higher quality production film or TV series. The one they made was pants. The book deserves better IMO.

Also The Catcher in the Rye, though I'm not sure they'd be able to recreate it faithfully from the book, the speech patterns and the way it's written is such a product of its time.

MsEllany · 21/10/2020 11:29

I would love an adaptation of one of my favourite books - Boy’s Life, by Richard R McCammon.

It’s a coming of age story in 60s Alabama, some horror, some thriller, some magical realism. But the best bits are the parts with the titular boy and his friends and their adventures.

It’d actually work very well on tv as the chapters work well as individual storylines. The book is out of print now, but it’s available on kindle.

I really like the Rivers of London series but I don’t want it on tv. I find the pithy asides amusing in a book but I dislike them immensely on tv. This is part of the reason I didn’t like Good Omens tbh.

KittyWindbag · 21/10/2020 12:00

Anybody read the YA series The Diviners? I always think that would make a FABULOUS tv series for the winter - gorgeous 1920s costumes, a bit of macabre and supernatural intrigue, some romance, very inclusive and multicultural t and themes. I cannot think why they haven’t already!

KittyWindbag · 21/10/2020 12:00

That should say inclusive and multicultural cast and themes.

MyFuzzyBoy · 21/10/2020 12:13

Snow globe by Amy Wilson

garlictwist · 21/10/2020 12:14

I have just finished Steinbeck's East of Eden and thought it would make a great film. I googled and found a very ancient one on YouTube which apparently bears very little resemblance to the original.

MrsToothyBitch · 21/10/2020 12:33

I'd love to see the first three Almonds and Raisins novels by Maisie Mosco made into a tv series. They span most of the twentieth century and are a wonderful look into a long gone world. Another vote for Shardlake and perhaps the Chalet School and the "when Hitler stole pink rabbit books" for children, too.

Would anyone be up for seeing Kate Atkinson's Behind the Scenes at the Museum? I'm a bit worried it works so well in my head, it wouldn't live up. Same with lots of Jilly Coopers. And "A Much Married Man"- which is a lovely romp to read.

Not long over due but I'd like to see Flambards remade with the latest book in it, to give the rightful ending! I'd also love to see Diary of a Provincial Lady and the "Crown" type history of the Mitfords suggested upthread.

I would also LOVE to see all of the Le Carre novels featuring Smiley brought to screen, even if he's only a walk on in a couple of them - those stories still stand up. I know he retconned the first two slightly but they could be easily adapted I think - the honourable school boy might take some work though. I hated the TV adaptation of A Murder of Quality- love the book, so if nothing else could they redo that and not butcher the plot?

TheWernethWife · 21/10/2020 12:33

Roarke lush

Clawdy · 21/10/2020 12:38

garlictwist the film of East Of Eden is brilliant, I went to see it when I was in my teens and I've never forgotten it. I went on to read the book, and loved that too. James Dean was amazing as Cal, absolutely perfect casting.

AdaColeman · 21/10/2020 13:25

Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer would make a super film.
Absolutely crammed with wonderful female roles, beautiful scenery, good roles for an up and coming child actress and a bit of male eye candy, cute animals galore.

Right on trend with its ecological message, and a happy ending too!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 21/10/2020 13:44

@Goosefoot Glenister is looking decidedly middle aged these days. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in a man but maybe not what you are thinking of for the role.

You may be right. But he is still a fine specimen Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 21/10/2020 15:14

* Someone mentioned A Little Princess above but I seem to remember a good film of it from when I was a kid. Does it not hold up?*

Is that the 1995 version? As a stand alone film, it’s enjoyable enough. As an adaptation of the book it’s awful. The characters are different, the ending is different, they added an unnecessary ‘action’ scene, and they changed the overall message from “the world would be better if we all tried to behave like Princesses” to “all little girls are princesses”.

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/10/2020 15:15

Are you me @FadedRed?

saracorona · 21/10/2020 15:17

The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. No doubt it's nowhere as good as I remember but i loved it. I think Steve Spielberg has the rights

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/10/2020 15:23

You would have set the Rivers of London Facebook group I'm on alight with those casting suggestions @TheRealJeanLouise Let's just say I don't agree but as long as Simon Pegg keeps his face off the screen I'll be happy.

TheRealJeanLouise · 21/10/2020 15:33

I didn’t know there was a Facebook group Halloween Shock I’m off to have a look...

I’m absolutely gutted actually. I was on my second reading of Moon Over Soho and left it behind in a hotel I was staying at Sad Guess I’m just going to have to move on to Whisperers Underground and try and remember what happens....

MsStillwell · 21/10/2020 15:33

I was thinking of starting such a thread last week when I was thinking I’d love to see a tv series on the life of Maya Angelou.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/10/2020 15:35

I'd like Fort Salem to be turned into a book, its just the sort of young adult, witchy fiction I like to lose myself in on a rainy day. Was most disappointed when I watched it to find out it was written for TV and not adapted from a book.
