They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

I'd really like Mist Over Pendle, based on the Lancashire "witches". I've read it many times so would love to see it on the screen x

DuesToTheDirt · 20/10/2020 22:52

Ethan Frome (as a film).

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 20/10/2020 23:04

I would love to see a good film of "Where the Crawdads sing"
I'd also like to see a TV series of "The Foundling" by Stacey Hall.

Yes to Rivers of London and Shardlake (but actually close to the books, not typical screen adaptations that stick to the story for ohh 10 pages then the script writer decides to guess what might happen next).

Idontwantaname · 20/10/2020 23:15

Rohindra Mistry’s A Fine Balance
Absolutely brilliant book with lots of colour and interest. And conflicting. At the end, has it been unremittingly depressing or actually inspiring? I lean to inspiring which is why I think it could be a great tv series.

Gordonsgrin · 20/10/2020 23:18

Hardin and the story of the seas, by Salman Rushdie, a marvellous tale.

katy1213 · 20/10/2020 23:32

@wotsitsarecheesy The Weirdstone was on TV years ago, although to be fair, production values weren't very high in those days.

A Gentleman in Moscow would make a brilliant film.

Ages since I read it, but I'm Not Complaining (Ruth Adam) is one of the best novels of life in the staffroom that I've ever read; always thought it would make a good TV series.

And I agree that there is so much Wilkie Collins still unplumbed.

In reality, I reckon we're about due for another Pride and Prejudice!

katy1213 · 20/10/2020 23:45

And it has been done before, but Ej Howard's Cazalets would be brilliant.

maddening · 20/10/2020 23:52

A. Children's one - the hounds of the morrigan - it would make an excellent series or film.

Vampiresneedtwernipnecks · 21/10/2020 00:06

Katherine by Anya Seton- that would make my day!
A really good series of Georgette Heyer adaptations would make my decade.

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 21/10/2020 00:07

Apparently Rivers of London is being developed by Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts production company, Simon Pegg is a fan.

YardleyX · 21/10/2020 00:38

The Faraway Tree!!

Scarby9 · 21/10/2020 00:47

Maggie O'Farrell's Hamnet - so visual.

SakiSiam · 21/10/2020 01:15

The 'Cold Comfort Farm' series, written by Stella Gibbons. They are hilarious. As an author she's been largely overlooked, apart from 'Cold Comfort Farm', but she's written so many more novels and is a great documentator of changing times. I'd particularly recommend her as a writer who produced very amusing novels, whilst also documenting social history. She includes in her novels things that were not generally discussed in 'polite company' in those times. Example, my latest read, circa 1950s, included a reference to a homosexual relationship, people not married having sexual relationships, and the suicide of a respected woman who was about to be named in a divorce court case.

Reading this back it sounds as if her novels were quite depressing, but they're far from it. I've never seen an episode of Downtown Abbey but, from what I've read about it, I'd assume Stella Gibbon's novels are likely to represent a wider sector of society from that period. I'm sure she'd have had far more fame if she wasn't a female novelist during the period she was writing.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 21/10/2020 02:53

Yes, Stella Gibbons' Westwood is a wonderful book that would look great as a TV series.

Another vote for No Name - Magdalen Vanstone is a tremendous character.

I'd love to see Manda Scott's Boudica series made. Also Maria McCann's Ace, King, Knave or The Wilding.

Also Elizabeth Haynes Into the darkest corner and Kate Atkinson's Life after Life.

Goosefoot · 21/10/2020 03:14

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners

Ruth Galloway - yes! With Noel Fielding as Cathbad, Philip Glenister as Nelson (but maybe too old? I see him as Gene Hunt and he is hot!!) and maybe Jo Joyner or Rosie Cavaliero as Ruth.
Glenister is looking decidedly middle aged these days. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in a man but maybe not what you are thinking of for the role.
Goosefoot · 21/10/2020 03:17

Was there ever a film version of The Good Earth? That could be really spectacular.

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/10/2020 04:42

One more vote for Rivers of London. Although I do 'see' Noel Clarke as Peter when reading it, it's Noel in his Micky Smith/Doctor Who days - I don't think he'll pass as a fresh-faced copper now Sad. Similarly, my Nightingale is Nathaniel Parker, too old now. Matthew Goode would be excellent!

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 21/10/2020 04:46

The lost art of keeping secrets by Eva Rice.

Starksforthewin · 21/10/2020 05:05

@PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe

Game of Thrones.
I’m with you Paula

Although I’d settle just for a new version of S8. 😆

HellequineViriato · 21/10/2020 06:35

AuntieUrsula I believe the reason Georgette Heyer has never been done is that the rights are held by BBC and a US company who have never done anything to date with them. There was talk in 2016 of a movie of the Grand Sophy but the plot I read about was wildly divergent from the book (as usual). I imagine all will have been shelved due to Corona anyway if it ever got going at all. I have no interest in watching something that differs so much to the book it might as well be a different story which has happened before. I must admit I've got to the point that I rarely bother with movies or TV nowadays. I stick with the books and gardening - plants rarely disappoint you.

Clawdy · 21/10/2020 08:33

SakiSiam Cold Comfort Farm has been televised and filmed at least twice, the last one was in the nineties, starring Kate Beckinsale, and a young and gorgeous Rufus Sewell as I remember!

Bl3ss3dm0m · 21/10/2020 08:40

Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series - two have already been made into films, but sadly the actor who played the main character (Odd Thomas himself) has died. Although he is British, l think that Eddie Redmayne would make a great Odd Thomas!
Apart from that, all the rest of Dean Koontz's books Grin

SavageBeauty73 · 21/10/2020 08:57

The Heart's Invisible Furies would make a great series.

I'm glad they are making Station Eleven as I loved the book.

DuesToTheDirt · 21/10/2020 09:21

Was there ever a film version of The Good Earth? That could be really spectacular.

Ooh yes. I read that years ago and parts have really stated with me, like the extravagance of buying tea to celebrate a marriage.

ginghamstarfish · 21/10/2020 09:26

I loved the Song of Circe and Song of Achilles but can't quite imagine them as tv.
