They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

Hannah’s gift written by her wonderful mother Maria Housden. Heartbreakingly beautiful.

MsStillwell · 21/10/2020 15:42

I’d like to see The Book Of Dave made in to a film, and a Sunday night series of Letters Of A Provincial Lady.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 21/10/2020 15:48

@ShinyMe

I really can't understand why they haven't made the Shardlake books yet.
Exactly... was about to post this!

Love love love Shardlake!

caperplips · 21/10/2020 15:53

100% yes to Shardlake - great books and would make a fantastic series.
100% no to any more Harry Potter!

Beeeees · 21/10/2020 15:59

Monday's Not Coming, but I'd need it to be done very well.

Meadow1203 · 21/10/2020 16:01

Beneath scarlett sky. beautiful book

FadedRed · 21/10/2020 16:14

@Disfordarkchocolate. Don’t think I’m you. Some days recently I’m not even sure I’m me, tbh. 😁
But they say great minds think alike.

MilkandWater · 21/10/2020 16:37

@AdaColeman

Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer would make a super film. Absolutely crammed with wonderful female roles, beautiful scenery, good roles for an up and coming child actress and a bit of male eye candy, cute animals galore. Right on trend with its ecological message, and a happy ending too!
Oh, I would love to see that. Plus it has two good roles for older actors, only I bet a screenwriter would want to cut the Garnett and Nanny storyline and concentrate on Deanna and her guy and Luisa and her in-laws.
YesPleaseMary · 21/10/2020 17:12

I’m desperate for someone to make the Flashman stories into a tv series!!

I seem to remember the bbc did A Little Princess as a Sunday teatime thing in the late 80s and if memory serves it had Maureen Lipman in it as Miss Minchin.

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/10/2020 17:15

I think there are a few @TheRealJeanLouise. I'm on Lord Grant's Irregulars.

Casting debates get a bit contentious.

HeyLala · 21/10/2020 17:32

Shantaram.

Would need to be a series as not sure this huge story could become a 2 hour film.

I thought I read that either Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt had bought the rights years ago but nothing has happened so far. Such a shame as such a great book and would love to see it bought to life

SakiSiam · 21/10/2020 20:08

I didn't know that @Clawdy, I wouldn't have discovered her then. However I'm sure, once I'd found the books, nothing would match up to her novels on screen. Am now on my 9th Stella Gibbons novel. It's fascinating how she makes up human lives but also chronicles history and social change.

pallisers · 21/10/2020 20:40

great idea for a thread.

I agree with Josephine Tey - Brat Farrar would make a great film. Also Girl Woman Other if done really well would be fabulous.

I would love to see a series of the Susan Howatch Starbridge series - or at least some of them.

WithLotsOfSprinkles0 · 21/10/2020 20:44

I would love to see Wire in the Blood on TV again- why it was axed is beyond me!

Also some of Martina Cole, Lady killer series.

boredwithmylastusername · 21/10/2020 20:50

Neville Shute books particularly a town like Alice

Gancanny · 21/10/2020 20:51

Yes to the PP who mentioned Behind The Scenes At The Museum, I'd like to see someone have a decent go at Life After Life too.

Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series would make a good Netflix show I think. It's not highbrow but it's entertaining, would adapt well, and would really fill that gap left by Buffy/Supernatural/Vampire Diaries.

For kids, the Skulduggery Pleasant books as a TV series.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 21/10/2020 20:54

The Long Walk by Stephen King:

One hundred teenage boys join an annual walking contest called "The Long Walk" or just "The Walk". Each contestant, called a "Walker", must maintain a speed of at least four miles per hour; if he drops below that speed for 30 seconds, he receives a verbal warning. A Walker who slows down again after receiving three warnings is "ticketed". The meaning of this action is intentionally kept vague at first, but it soon becomes clear that "buying a ticket" means to be shot dead by soldiers riding in half-tracks along the roadside. Walkers may be shot immediately for certain serious violations, such as trying to leave the road or attacking the half-track, and are given warnings for minor violations such as interfering with one another.

pastapestoparmesan · 21/10/2020 20:56

Ballet Shoes has been done a few times, but many other Noel Streatfeilds would be wonderful on screen.

Also Trebizon, cos I’m obsessed...

Dashel · 21/10/2020 21:04

Yay for Wheel of Time series! Thanks @GrouchyKiwi that’s great news!

I know it’s corny but I’m also going to add a series of interview with a Vampire not the film versions.

I think after GOT there will be more fantasy shows. But I would also like to see a remake of the Barchester chronicles and Mapp and Lucia, they did a few new episodes a few years ago.

dancingindungarees · 21/10/2020 21:21

Another vote for Shardlake here.

I may or may not have developed a crush on Barak.

Davros · 21/10/2020 21:34

Solar by Ian McEwen

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2020 21:37

I’d like to see a remake of On the Beach

I loved seeing Melbourne in it, Aus and all of it. But I could do with a new version as it’s my favourite book.

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2020 21:38

Actually a few Nevil Shute books redone

Agree with pp A Town Like Alice
Pied Piper

Liquorishlucy · 21/10/2020 21:56

Not read the shardlake books but apparently it's been made into bbc radio 4 series.
Agree with the historian, the audio book is great but a film or series would be better.
Some of the books by Susan Hill, the small hand (made into a crap tv programme by channel 5 which completely changed the story) and the mist in the mirror, the man in the picture which are both very atmospheric spooky tales.
