They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovich
The St Mary’s series by Jodi Taylor
The Ruth Galloway series by Elli Griffiths.

SchrodingersBox · 20/10/2020 11:41

@FadedRed We have similar tastes, they're all good options. Another I'd add is the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown which could the sci-fi equivalent of Game of Thrones, I'm not much of a sci-fi fan and was surprised to find I'd bought it on audible but I absolutely loved the books.

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. Amazing book- was optioned by Tim Burton years ago but never made

I was excited to hear there was a Magic Faraway film planned too. Fingers crossed

Fallfly · 20/10/2020 11:56

Oh I would love to see a Magic Faraway Tree film!

I'd like to see The Silence of The Girls dramatised. Something classical told from the women's perspective, unlike Gladiator, Troy etc.

Pandamumium · 20/10/2020 11:57

Mila 18 by Leon Uris. A story of the Polish Resistance in WWII. Something for everyone. War, Love etc.

The Chronicles of Amber, by Roger Zelasny.

Would work very very well I think - a superb story, set in a fantastical world (of which our own is just a corrupted mirror), with intrigue and warfare amongst the ruling family. The princes of this realm (the titular "Nine Princes In Amber", from the first book) all have the power to travel the worlds of "Shadow" - infinite variations on reality, where anything can be found.

It all starts with a character waking up in a hospital with no memory of who he is....

Very highly recommended, and with very very good potential I think for a TV series. There-again... I am not exactly an expert!! :-)

Yes to the Rivers of London series!

Also the Clovenhoof series, which would make an hilarious post-watershed boxset if done right.

AllAboutHallowsEve · 20/10/2020 12:15

I'd love to see a Netflix miniseries of The Historian, which is a reimagining of Dracula. Wonderful book.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 20/10/2020 12:18

I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. Also Station Eleven but that one seems a bit too close to home at the moment.

dancinfeet · 20/10/2020 12:18

More Philippa Gregory book adaptations. The white queen and white princess were great, I would love to see more of her fiction on tv

Okbye · 20/10/2020 12:21

Not a very ‘well known’ series but the Anarchy series by Megan De Vos. I’ve read those books more than any others, never get bored of them! I’m desperate for it to be made into a TV show/movie!

MercurytoLibra · 20/10/2020 12:22

Yes to the Rivers of London
A proper Discworld series not the abomination that’s just been made.

All the books in the parasol world by Gail Carriger. Especially the ones aboard the spotted custard.
Eve Dallas and Roarke.

Holothane · 20/10/2020 12:26

Done over 8 hours or more The Physician by Noah Gordon
Failing that Pillers of the earth faithful to the book.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/10/2020 12:29

The first response had my answer..Elly Griffith's Ruth Galloway series. But I bet they'd make Ruth younger, thinner and more fashionable. The very things she isn't...and the things I love her for! ( My bet is Jodie Whitaker, even though she's completely wrong on all counts!)

lovepickledlimes · 20/10/2020 12:30

I know they have made them into movies but I would kill for a Harry Potter tv series. So much was left out in the movies. With a TV series you could do one full season for each book

banivani · 20/10/2020 12:31

Wilkie Collins' books. The novel No Name could make a really exciting heist film.

Mary Roberts Reinhart wrote quite formulaic mystery novels, but they speak very eloquently of US society of that time - including the racism. Delicately handled and modernised some of them would make great films.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/10/2020 12:34

Another vote for Rivers of London.

For children... Chalet School.

I don't like TV adaptions of books though. Never quite how I imagined it.

DoctorYang · 20/10/2020 12:36

The Seven Sisters series

IVflytrap · 20/10/2020 12:37

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Preferably made by the BBC for the Sunday 6pm slot. Preferably with the screenplay written by someone other than Jack Thorne.

ShinyMe · 20/10/2020 12:37

I really can't understand why they haven't made the Shardlake books yet.

DoctorYang · 20/10/2020 12:38

The Spanish Princess has been made into a TV series too.

Yes ! Larchfield by Polly Clark

I came here to say exactly this! It could be amazing! The films were such a massive let down, there’s no way to fit all the good stuff in to a couple of hours. A proper 12 hour long episode series would do it justice.
MadamRosmerta · 20/10/2020 12:42

I second a Harry Potter TV series by a powerhouse like HBO or Netflix where they'll be done properly. One where they keep all the intricacies in, a series for each book like they did with GoT. The films are so old now it's about time they were redone properly!

Pelleas · 20/10/2020 12:42

I'm a little torn on this because often, when I see an adaptation of a book, I find myself annoyed because the screenwriter has taken the approach of writing a significantly different story - e.g. Mansfield Park (film), Jodie Piccoult's 'My sister's keeper,' Maeve Binchey's Circle of Friends.

In rare cases I prefer the film version - e.g. The Talented Mr Ripley, but if it's the other way round as it mostly is, I find myself gnashing my teeth.

That aside, I'd love to see Antonia Forest's Marlow series adapted for TV. 'The Marlows and the Traitor' would be very suited to a TV series.

Also, Caro Fraser's Caper Court books would dramatise well as an adult TV drama.
