They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

I'd love a Faraway Tree film/tv series. Provided they stick to the original story unlike that awful cartoon version they made a few years ago.

For Phillippa Gregory I'd love the Wideacre trilogy.

Id also like to see faithful adaptations of Sophie Kinsellas Shopaholic books, Victoria Andrews Flowers in the Attic series and Danielle Steeles No Greater Love. All of which were fantastic books but utterly shit on screen.

And a big yes please to a true to book Harry Potter series!

Fallfly · 20/10/2020 13:55

So many of these I haven't heard of. I'm going to have to take a look on audible.

To whoever said Circe by Madeline Miller, I think HBO are actually adapting it.

CeramicGuineaPig · 20/10/2020 13:58

I am agreeing with Ruth Galloway. Although I have a very clear image of her in my mind so it is unlikely the actress cast would meet with my approval. Also, the longer Nelson doesn’t leave his wife the more of a complete git I see him as, which I can ignore in the books to a certain extent but not on screen. The scenery would be fantastic though.
I just read Sisters by Daisy Johnson, I wasn’t that keen on the book but thought it would make a good spooky mini series like that one with Michael Palin and Scarborough Fair.

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire

I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. Also Station Eleven but that one seems a bit too close to home at the moment.
Station Eleven is being done -- filming started in January, with Mackenzie Davis and Himesh Patel in the main roles. No idea how far they got before they had to close down. As with everything being filmed back then, there are obviously three options: abandon it, start again under restrictions or pick up again when things are clearer. (A massive problem for things involving child actors, like 'His Dark Materials'.)
MorvaanReed · 20/10/2020 14:05

I agree about the Terry Pratchett books, Ben Aaronovitch Folly Books and Elly Griffiths books.

I quite fancy a Georgette Heyer series.

DolphinsAndNemesis · 20/10/2020 14:07

I would like to see a good adaptation of Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights. Every single film or TV version has been dire. I would especially like to see WH dramatised exactly as we see it in the book: Lockwood's visit and then Nelly Dean beginning to tell the history of the house and its inhabitants before flashing back to the past. Also the filmmakers should place as much emphasis on the second generation as on the first.

As for other books, I would love to see an adaptation of The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

I also second the suggestion of film versions of Antonia Forest's books. I suppose one issue would be finding twins who could play Nicola and Lawrie (and I definitely don't think they should use a single actress to play them both, Parent Trap style).

gemdrop84 · 20/10/2020 14:09

The Thief Taker
One Day in December
I'd also love a Harry Potter TV Series

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/10/2020 14:10

A nice Georgette Heyer series would be good for Sunday nights (The Quiet Gentleman would be my choice).

And a few Josephine Try adaptations wouldn't go amiss, if they could resist modernising them at all.

Ladyface · 20/10/2020 14:14

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 20/10/2020 14:20

Sue Grafton's Alphabet series, but she was firmly against the idea. I can understand why.

Susan Cooper has grave doubts about the Dark is Rising series being filmed, principally because there's not a lot of 'action' in the books. The film they did make was a shocker.
The Chalet School would be excellent, but expensive. And I fear you wouldn't find that many child actors who could give the impression of having had the finest education the world has known. Multilingual? Check. Decline Latin verbs while whipping up an Apple Charlotte? Check. Make a dolls house? Check. Climb the north face of the Eiger in the vac'? Check.

JimmyJabs · 20/10/2020 14:21

I also agree about the Ruth Galloway series. Maybe Ruth Jones and Jason Isaacs in the lead roles? They're both a bit too old irl, but equally they can both look younger!

Collidascope · 20/10/2020 14:22

I'm with you there. Iirc, younger Cathy and Hareton take up about half the book, and yet every adaptation insists on lingering on the completely charmless Heathcliffe and older Cathy.

I like the idea of an HBO style Harry Potter series but I wonder if it would be hard to strike a balance between appealing to the now adults who grew up with it, and the children it was written for. I'd love it to be dark and gritty rather than cheesy like the movies, but you'd need a lot of excellent child-actors to pull it off

I'm going to look up some of these books.

If done well - The Sun also Rises ( Fiesta ) Hemingway could make a fantastic film

MobLife · 20/10/2020 14:25

The Passage by Justin Cronin especially if it were a Netflix or HBO series

Fudgefeet · 20/10/2020 14:25

I would love the Coen brothers to do Vernon god little. I’m glad you asked this question because I think this a lot 😊

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 20/10/2020 14:32

@DadOnIce I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 20/10/2020 14:35

Kenneth Branagh was set to play Shardlake. BBC were going to do it in 2007, he then did Wallander and moved to directing things like Thor instead.

I really hope they do this though. They are amazing books.

DadOnIce · 20/10/2020 14:35

A very faithful in spirit, doesn't have to be to the letter Pratchett series would be most welcome. The trailers for 'The Watch' don't exactly inspire confidence.

GrouchyKiwi · 20/10/2020 14:37

I think Taika Waititi could do a good Pratchett version. He has the right mix of irreverence and humanity in his films.

Crinklesmile · 20/10/2020 14:38

ABARAT -By Cliver Barker

I am so shocked it hasn't been adapted yet.

MrsBeltane · 20/10/2020 14:39

The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

JamieFrasersSwingingKilt · 20/10/2020 14:42

Love the Shardlake idea. And Wilkie Collins' No Name. Bloody loved that book.

PaddyF0dder · 20/10/2020 14:45

@MobLife

The Passage was made into a tv series. It was on last year, and got cancelled after season one.

It was very badly done.

MadamShazam · 20/10/2020 15:01

The Charlie Parker books by John Connolly, but a series, not a film. However, I believe that the author has no interest in his books being adapted for television. 😕
