They keep remaking Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Little Women.

What book would you like to see adapted?
I'd love to see The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (and I know, there is one TV series from ages ago), Evelina by Frances Burney, who was said to have inspired Jane Austen. Oh, and The Power by Naomi Alderman.

OP posts:

I was also going to suggest a David Gemmel series but the books I had in mind were his Troy trilogy.

Failing that I'd settle for a series from JV Jones, preferably the Swords series, maybe she would get around to finishing it!

brightonmyday · 20/10/2020 13:07

I agree with the OP about Tenant of Wildfell Hall - that would make a great tv series. I also recently read Margaret Forster's How to Measure a Cow, which wasn't one of her best, but it felt like it would have made a better tv script than novel.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/10/2020 13:09

There is a film of The Knife of Never Letting Go in production, with Tom Holland as Todd and Daisy Ridley as Viola. It was due to be released last year but this was delayed for reshoots which doesn't sound good. It's an excellent book.

Yes to the suggestion of top-quality Georgette Heyer but please no to any more Harry Potter!

EllieQ · 20/10/2020 13:12

Another vote for Rivers of London, with Paul McGann as Nightingale. Not sure who could play Peter, though - I think Noel Clarke is too old now as Peter is in his is mid-twenties when the series starts.

adawong · 20/10/2020 13:15

The Dark Tower
This ^^ The 2017 film was absolute shite.
It bore no more than a passing nod to the books. Idris bloody Elba was totally miscast and gave piss poor performance ( as usual )

ginghamtablecloths · 20/10/2020 13:16

I'd love to see Coming Up For Air by George Orwell. It's a great story which is beautifully written but would probably be thought rather dated now.

BetsyBigNose · 20/10/2020 13:17

The Girl in the Red Coat by Kate Hamer. Such a beautifully written book with some incredible imagery - it would make a wonderful film.

listsandbudgets · 20/10/2020 13:20

@Aroundtheworldin80moves I was going to say Chalet School as well especially School At the Chalet and The Chalet School in Exile. The first just has such wonder to it and the other is basically an adventure story with some very strong underlying messages about antisemitism and freedom of thought and speech

For adults I think the Phillipa Gregory Tradescant books - an intriguing mix of 17th century politics, trade, exploration and gardening :)

Lemonyfuckit · 20/10/2020 13:27

Oooh yes please to really good, long Harry Potter with all the lovely details included. Big budget HBO style like GoT.
Also yes for Rivers of London and more Phillipa Gregory.
Also Val McDermid - either the Carol Jordan and / or Karen Pirie series - love crime fiction / drama and great to have more with lead female detectives.
It's maybe already been done but the Cazelet Chronicles - would make a lovely one for the Sunday teatime / evening drama slot.

Lemonyfuckit · 20/10/2020 13:30

Oh yes also to Marianne Keyes Walsh sisters books, that would be hilarious.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 20/10/2020 13:31

The Tiffany Aching Discworld books would be properly amazing - if done well. Most Discworld adaptations just don't work for me, on screen or on stage. I think it's because so much of Pratchett's genius is in the little aside comments which don't fit into non-verbal world building. I'm usually quite easily pleased with adaptations, but Discworld seems to be a bit of a challenge.

TrulyOutrageousJem · 20/10/2020 13:32

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine. I loved the book and I’d love it to be purchased by the bbc and shot in Scotland. That’s where the book was set but I worry if it is taken up it’ll be moved to London or the US.

nancybotwinbloom · 20/10/2020 13:35

I'd like to see all of the Martina Cole books in two part itv or bbc series.

They did a couple but I'd like to see them all.

MercurytoLibra · 20/10/2020 13:37

I always see Peter Grant as Alfred Enoch and Jude Law as Nightingale but wouldn’t complain about the casting mentioned up thread.

Also a decent proper remake of Harry Dresden one series per book.

LadyJaye · 20/10/2020 13:40

YYY to Rivers of London (although Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is SO perfect as Peter in the audiobooks that it's difficult to imagine anybody else playing him - I think he's maybe a wee bit too old).

Shardlake would also be brilliant, I love that series.

I'm normally quite good at 'casting' books that I love, but for some reason, I can't picture many Shardlake characters in my head, especially not Matthew - anybody got any ideas?

Mochudubh · 20/10/2020 13:44

Shardick by Douglas Adams. I used to think it could only be done justice with an animation but I think CGI is up to it now for a live action version. I'd always pictured Brian Blessed as Bel ka Trazet (sp? it's a long time since I read the book) but he may be too old now.

TroysMammy · 20/10/2020 13:46

I'd love to see Damien Boyd's Nick Dixon books on tv but after mis-casting Stephen Tomkinson as DCI Banks, another of my favourite series of books, perhaps not.

Mrsmedley · 20/10/2020 13:48

Ash by Malinda Lo. It'd make a great adaptation for teens/adults. it's a gay twist on Cinderella and very lovely.

NastyBlouse · 20/10/2020 13:50

YY to Rivers of London. I see Lucien Laviscount as Peter Grant, personally

CeramicGuineaPig · 20/10/2020 13:52

@IVflytrap

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Preferably made by the BBC for the Sunday 6pm slot. Preferably with the screenplay written by someone other than Jack Thorne.
A friend and I decided back in university 17 odd years ago that this needed to be done and if nobody else was doing it we would. We got as far as taking the book to the pub for a “script meeting”.
ChrisPrattsFace · 20/10/2020 13:52

Nikki Frenchs Frieda Klein psych crime, think they’d make an excellent series. With seven books I easily think they could get seven series out of it!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/10/2020 13:52

@JimmyJabs

I'd like someone to remake The Little Stranger, maybe as a four-part series. The recent film was such a disappointment.
I love that book, I really looked forward to the film. It was, okaaaay, but tbh I don’t think a film or tv series can ever really capture the true essence of a book like that. Likewise, The Small Hand by Susan Hill. Again loved the book but the film was just okay, enjoyable but nothing like as affecting as the book. I’d like to see: The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (I know it wasn’t universally well liked on MN but I LOVED it!) Time and Time Again with its excellent twist and finally, I Saw a Man (echoes of Eye in the Sky but better with a ‘backstory’).

Lost Dog: a Love Story

@binkyblinky

Song of Achilles and Circe by Madeline Miller
Yes!
littledrummergirl · 20/10/2020 13:54

Phillip Gibbs no price for freedom. Only if it stays true to the book though.
