Living in an old house with high ceilings and single glazing. In London (for geographical context with the temperature).

AIBU to have not turned the heating on at all yet?

Colleagues and friends think we're crazy!

@whatsbinhappnin

Wow there are some bitter people on here Grin

And clearly many who don't give a shit about the environment!

My solar panels generate more electricity than we use.
ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 20/10/2020 16:02

If you're not cold then no issues.
If you are cold but you can manage and struggle financially then no issues.
If you are cold and have the means, but you just don't then it's rather ridiculous but your problem.

I'm cold. When I'm cold things start to hurt and I'm uncomfortable. We can afford the heating so it's on.

Dugee · 23/10/2020 22:15

Mines still not on but we are in socks and hoodies now. I can't get over how warm it is for the end of October.

TheCanyon · 23/10/2020 22:43

Do you have dc @whatsbinhappnin ?

I grew up in a freezing house, no central heating until I had moved out, one coal fire heating over four floors?! Fucking freezing. I and my children will never suffer that, my parents laugh at me but by fuck not a chance will my kids be cold under my roof.

Iola4 · 23/10/2020 22:53

Haha brilliant how ppl are going ape over a little light heartedness.

We haven't either and we're 'up North', it's not actually cold. We've had a weird warm breeze these last few days and silly me going out dressed up like frosty the pigging snowman, then sweating like Percy the pig.
I never understand ppl who turn their heating on as soon as there is a nip in the air, put some bleeding clothes on or grow out your body hair! Grew up in an old cottage and remember frost on the inside of my window... actually I had a car that used to get frost on the inside of the window, then I had a car where the heaters were positioned directly at the steering wheel and the buggers wouldn't move so I'd end up burning my blooming fingers on long journeys...living an insane dream.

MushMonster · 23/10/2020 22:54

We have used it at some points, but for example today it was not cold enough, so no heating on at all.

MadameFireweed · 23/10/2020 22:59

When I were a lass we had to keep blocks of ice in the house all winter, it were that balmy.

Blocks of ice?! That’s nothing. We had to have a whole iceberg in the kitchen, the weather were that hot.

whatsbinhappnin · 23/10/2020 23:00

@TheCanyon no DC yet! but wouldn't make them suffer!

Agree to put some bloody clothes on!! People walking around in t-shirts and no socks with the heating on.......

We're up north too. It really is unseasonably warm this year.

Me too! In the Highlands and had a few snowdrifts too. No wonder I had chilblains on my toes growing up!

And clearly many who don't give a shit about the environment!

And there it is.

Lighthearted? Yeah, right.

Macncheeseballs · 24/10/2020 07:40

No car, or foreign holidays either op?

Mummadeeze · 24/10/2020 07:43

I am so envious of you. I would love to be able to save money by having it off but I was freezing in our house most of the Summer, let alone now. I just wouldn’t be able to have it off now, it would be unbearable. I do have it on a timer and suffer for part of the day but am living for 4pm when it comes back on!

whatsbinhappnin · 24/10/2020 07:52

@macncheeseballs yes, no car or foreign holidays.

Macncheeseballs · 24/10/2020 08:00

Pretty impressive! Is there anything you do that some would consider bad for the environment? Meat eater? Clothes dryer? Consumption of products from far away?

whatsbinhappnin · 24/10/2020 08:09

Eat meat around 3-4 days a week, I lose too much weight if not.
No clothes dryer.
Most food from local farmers market.

So have you never been abroad? I have a friend who never flies, she does all her holidays abroad by train, are you the same?

whatsbinhappnin · 24/10/2020 08:39

I have been abroad before

mogtheexcellent · 24/10/2020 08:46

I get your post OP. We had single glazing until we replaced in 2018. We still have night storage heating which is expensive to run. So we held off as long as possible putting the heating on (prior to double glazing it was new years day). Last year we didnt put it on at all because we have lovely new double glazing.

We have a log burner in the lounge and couple of small heaters we move around the house to dry washing, heat my office and DDs bedroom.

nosswith · 24/10/2020 08:48

I'm in London and have only had it on once, when I returned from a weekend away.

whatsbinhappnin · 24/10/2020 08:51

@mogtheexcellent I would love double glazing, but unfortunately not allowed as it's a listed building Sad if we had double glazing we probably wouldn't put it on at all as it's the chilly breeze through the cracks that makes us put it on in winter!

OP posts:
nokidshere · 24/10/2020 11:03

Ours is on because I live with cold people who like to be warm (so unreasonable of them) so I have to suck it up and put a fan on for me.

IamMaz · 24/10/2020 11:13

I NEVER turn ours off! I am always chilly...
And I live in the south, the house is very well insulated and not old!!! LOL

zigzagbetty · 24/10/2020 12:16

We don't have heating in our house, just absorb next doors heat Blush
