Living in an old house with high ceilings and single glazing. In London (for geographical context with the temperature).

AIBU to have not turned the heating on at all yet?

Colleagues and friends think we're crazy!

Is there really any need for all the snotty replies on this thread?
Ask a silly question... Bear in mind not all of us live in the balmy south, and some of the answers reflect this.

Well the replies are to be expected. No one knows why the op hasn’t put her heating on. Her home must be cold. I would assume the main reason people chose to live in a cold house is due to the cost associated with heating it. Very seldom does someone choose proactively to live cold for any other reason. It happens, but in reality it’s rare.

So the op posting like it’s funny and something to brag about, when in reality it’s likely because she can’t afford to heat her home is going to prompt some snotty responses, because folks will think she thinks it’s funny and brag worthy.

Like others my thermostat is set to come on when we feel we need it, not by weather.

I remember staying at a friend's house when I was a teenager and woke in the morning to ice on the insides of the window. Loved picking at it and having shards of ice in my hand. Ah the good old 1980s.

My Dad had the heating on in July when it was 30 degrees outside as he used to work in South Africa so he "felt the cold" when he was back home oop norf. My FIL will declare he isn't cold yet is wearing a vest, a short sleeved shirt and a jumper! Yorkshire man, through and through Grin

My friend's husband will not allow the heating to be put on before a specific date so she would come round to mine with the children to get warm. I would have told him to fuck off, I hate being cold.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 20/10/2020 09:19

*not by the month of the year

Osirus · 20/10/2020 09:24

We have ours on in the evening for a few hours. Have done for a few weeks and I live further south than you OP. Might have a bigger house though, which can tend to be a bit cooler!

We also have a log burner which we have on every night.

@SchrodingersImmigrant

October😁😀 The time when MN changes from competitive under and over eaters to competitive under and over heaters😂
Brilliant @SchrodingersImmigrant 😂
gurteee · 20/10/2020 10:23

You lucky thing Grin

Maybe you have good insulation in your home or don't usually feel the cold?

I grew up in a VERY cold home and thought I'd be as tough as old boots forever but ageing and illness and medications have turned me into a cold body.

Had the heating on already this year. Mind you, I am also much further north than you.

formerbabe · 20/10/2020 10:26

I live in London..haven't put the heating on yet. I don't really feel the cold. My dc have extra heaters in their rooms as well as the radiators and I put those on to warm their rooms but that's it.

recklessruby · 20/10/2020 11:16

We re in the south east. It's not really cold yet. I have turned it off when it came on a few times.
Usually my school is uncomfortable by now with heating and closed windows but the only good thing about covid is we must keep the buildings well ventilated so windows open.
I m from NE Scotland originally so run hot here.
My absent minded ds had the fan on in his room last night Grin

cologne4711 · 20/10/2020 11:28

I probably wouldn't have bothered but I share the house with my husband who puts the fire on out of habit. Drives me mad, he doesn't even check if the heating is about to go on before he turns on the gas fire in the lounge. As for putting a jumper on...

Isn’t putting the radiators on effectively putting the heating on? Confused
formerbabe · 20/10/2020 12:05

@bluntness100

No not the radiators that are linked to the central heating. Individual heaters which are just on in my dcs bedrooms. The actual central heating hasn't been put on yet.

unmarkedbythat · 20/10/2020 12:13

Why would I care whether or not someone else heats their house?

Lolaloveslemonade · 20/10/2020 12:32

Well aren’t people vile OP?
I haven’t put it on either! It’s wet here but not too cold yet.

So you have put the heating on then 🤨

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/10/2020 12:49

I have to say that I like it colder, but very quickly learned after arriving to UK that heating ahs to be on at certain times of the year or mould appears...

No I've put on two electric heaters in the dcs bedrooms. The actual central heating hasn't been on.

If you’re heating your house you’re putting the heating on. Some people don’t have radiators at all.

Well only two rooms...which are on the top floor so the main part of house isn't being heated.
Lolaloveslemonade · 20/10/2020 13:24

formerbabe

Are the two rooms heated?

peachescariad · 20/10/2020 13:27

@Titsinknicks

Literally no one gives a shit?
Agreed!
whatsbinhappnin · 20/10/2020 15:34

Wow there are some bitter people on here Grin

And clearly many who don't give a shit about the environment!

Bluntness100 · 20/10/2020 15:40

You don’t put your heating on and sit cold because you’re worried about the environment?

Okay,,,,

honigbutter · 20/10/2020 15:49

If it's because of cost I understand, but at work around this time we had the boring competitive frugality conversations among people who definitely could afford to put it on.

Then there are the ones who claim they don't put the heating on till November but turn out to have the gas fire on in the living-room. Not central heating admittedly, but not sitting in the cold either.
