Living in an old house with high ceilings and single glazing. In London (for geographical context with the temperature).

AIBU to have not turned the heating on at all yet?

Colleagues and friends think we're crazy!

These threads always remind me of when DD was at a magnet boarding school full of the brightest kids in the state, and they had to actually tell all these supposedly really smart kids that it wasn't a good idea to wear flip-flops outside when it was -15C and the snow was 6' deep.

I guess they were crazy too.

katy1213 · 20/10/2020 03:24

Has it put hairs on your chest?

Anordinarymum · 20/10/2020 03:26

strokes the radiator

Topseyt · 20/10/2020 03:34

You should wait until there is ice that is inches thick on the inside of the window panes and six inch icicles hanging from your nose and other extremities before even considering putting the heating on.

Surely everyone does that? 😃

mrsbeeton999 · 20/10/2020 03:46

Lightheaded? Must be the cold

Angelina82 · 20/10/2020 04:03

Of course you’re not being unreasonable. For the sake of the environment I just wish there were more people like you, but going by the highly defensive replies to yourself there isn’t any! Grin

Only six inches ? At least 8 is the norm surely Grin

Surely it depends on how warm your house is. I'm lucky my house is really warm, great insulation and gets the sun in the day so its warm. A friend in the same street has a tree blocking the sunlight and maybe isn't so well insulated and needs their heating on practically all year (although its lovely and cool in the summer!).

Tumbleweed101 · 20/10/2020 07:47

You are only BU if someone in your household is cold and unhappy about it - or if your house will get damp.

My MIL house was only heated by a fireplace so the living room was toasty but the rest of the house was freezing. I used to dread those visits as I was so cold - we didn’t want to stay in the living room with in-laws when we were in our late teens and I was too scared to say I was too cold. We used to go to the pub to warm up 🤣.

MJMG2015 · 20/10/2020 07:48

Light hearted probably wouldn't have made much difference. It's the 4th heating thread that I've seen already this month, there are loads every year. But if you're new & not using MN a lot, you're not to know that

You're not 'crazy' to do what suits you. Your comfort level, your budget, your competitive spirit.

I've had mine on quite a bit because I like being cosy. I could have put more layers on & been warm enough, but the house would still have felt cold & not cosy. I had enough years like that when I moved in & before I had the central heating put in. Not keen to hate moving around a cold house again. I don't put it on in the mornings because I hate waking up too hot & if I out it on when I wake up it doesn't have time to warm the house up before it's time to leave for work, but it's on auto to come in before I get home at night, so it's cosy to come in to.

Do what suits you & if you want to have a bit of fun seeing how long you can last before putting it on, then do that...

(Obviously as long as no babies/elderly/pets are suffering!!)

AgentJohnson · 20/10/2020 07:49

We haven’t put the heating on yet because the apartment is very well insulated and my hot flushes mean that I would be walking around starkers several times a day. Very tempted to put it on for an hour though because I do miss the underfloor heating in the bathroom of a morning.

We generally have the heating on for 3.5 months of the year.

Bluntness100 · 20/10/2020 07:52

It’s your home and you can live as you please. If you’re not cold, don’t put it on, but if you can’t afford it, I’m not sure that’s light hearted to be honest.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/10/2020 07:56

I live in Yorkshire. My heating is controlled by the thermostat, not the calendar. If it snows in My the heating is on. If it is warm in October the heating is off. Simple

Same here. Absolutely do not understand the 'go by the calendar' people. August is often cold and wet before improving for warmer weather in September, October and even November.

I couple of years ago I remember a very warm and sunny Sunday November first, where it appeared that the entire county went out walking in the countryside. No heating needed that day, but there would have been plenty earlier in the year, even in August.

For those people who can afford to put the heating on, sorry but there is no medal available for being the last to do so.

Yes, put a jumper on if you feel a bit cold, and of course we shouldn't be heating our houses to tropical levels and sitting round the house in a t-shirt, because of environmental concerns, but beyond that just put the bloody heating on if you are cold. It's what it's there for.

Drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls · 20/10/2020 08:09

Who cares? If it’s cold put the heating on, if not leave it off. Simple

Felifox · 20/10/2020 08:12

I've had ny heating on a couple of mornings but not had to have it on regularly as yet.I do have double glazing, thick walls and I live in the South West. Temperature is 19° in my sitting room.

We had expensive wooden double glazing fitted in a London house and it made a huge difference

Nonimai · 20/10/2020 08:19

Yanbu. We are the same - only in the North.
Big, stone, high ceiling, single glazed house. Our income is less than 50% of what it was pre-Covid. We can’t afford to put the gas on for heating yet. I’m aiming for beginning December. Thank goodness for electric blankets!

Dugee · 20/10/2020 08:23

It's not that cold yet, 14 degrees at 7 this morning, here in Manchester.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/10/2020 08:25

October😁😀 The time when MN changes from competitive under and over eaters to competitive under and over heaters😂

Ariela · 20/10/2020 08:52

Our house is tucked away, well insulated, double glazed and never gets cold. We might light the log fire for Christmas, but unlikely to need central heating on till the outside temperature is below 4 or 5 degrees.

My friend used to live in a lovely Georgian flat conversion in a terrace in Bristol. It was 1st floor and the people below kept their flat toasty. In the 4 years she lived there she never put her heating on.

Qwom · 20/10/2020 08:56

We live in a really old, stone house and the heating is shite so we dont have it on at all because the cost is extortionate! We also have a bees nest in our chimney and have to wait until Nov for the sweep to come and get it out so no heating til at least then...
Apart from our gas fires, but we haven't had them on yet.
Your house, your rules... plus London is pretty warm Grin

copperoliver · 20/10/2020 08:59

If you are cold turn it on if you aren't don't. X

paperandfireworks · 20/10/2020 09:02

Have a prize for the dullest thread.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 20/10/2020 09:05

Is there really any need for all the snotty replies on this thread?

DragonPie · 20/10/2020 09:07

Are you wanting a ‘well done?’. If I’m cold I turn the heating on, the time of year is irrelevant.

One thing I remember as a child is being cold. Not being allowed to turn the radiator up in my bedroom and the house being heated by an electric heater in the living room. It was miserable. I always vowed my house wouldn’t be cold.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/10/2020 09:10

Its a traditional conversation isn't it? Like leaves turning new colours, its part of autumn.

We've had our log burner on a few evenings, but in the day time we haven't needed it. Temperature in the house seems generally to be a steady 19-20c during the day. I tend to run hot, so that feels fine. At night I start off with an extra blanket over the summer duvet and fling it all off and on and off through the night. My internal thermostat is a bit confused at present.
