Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?
@th22 the ones I always see are 'delete if not aloud' 😬
🤣

MaskingForIt · 20/10/2020 16:26

Use of “baby” as a proper noun, without preceding it with a determiner (my, our) or an article (the).

It is too twee for words, and IMHO rather patronising when coming from medical staff.

AliceAforethought · 20/10/2020 16:43

Posters on here talking about their "Spidey senses" tingling (or whatever they do). 🙄

This is fine for 8-year-olds playing at comic book characters, but when a grown adult uses it, apparently seriously, I assume that they're an idiot and disregard what they're saying.

Andante57 · 20/10/2020 16:44

In UK calling biscuits ‘cookies’.

PumpkinetChocolat · 20/10/2020 16:57

@Zerrin13

Another one here sharing the hatred for Christmas lunch. Its not a lunch its a dinner.
surely that depends at the time you are having it?

I get the Wedding Breakfast, but otherwise lunch is lunch?

WellGoshDarnIt · 20/10/2020 17:17

I cannot bear the misogynistic bullshit that those two shitrags the Sun and the DM use to describe any vaguely famous woman going about her business...
She will be doing one or more of the below:

'Flaunting her curves'
'Showing off her stunning weight loss'
'Displaying her washboard abs'
'Rocking that yellow swimsuit'
'Squeezed into a tight black dress'
'Looking fresh-faced', (translation: not wearing make up)
'Looking tired', (translation: looking rough)

I could go on.
But I won't. 🤮🤮🤮

Dutypaid · 20/10/2020 17:23

Reach out
Hubby
Hun
Karen
Incorrect use of literally
Using gift as a verb
Babe

I mentally respond with, oh fuck off, to any of the above. Sometimes an eye roll sneaks out.

AliceAforethought · 20/10/2020 17:34

I also dislike "Just let that sink in (for a minute)" - patronising wank,

and

Maybe, just maybe
@BritWifeinUSA
Potty for toilet. My (American) husband says “I have to go potty”. I scream inside.

Omg I just cant stop laughing. The thought of a grown man going potty 🤣🤣
Sorry but that made me laugh.

Go potty.

SlopesOff · 21/10/2020 11:13

Track and Trace. It is for tracking your parcel on Royal Mail.

It is not a virus tracking app. That is called TEST and Trace.

If they're teenage, they're "all grown up". You can't help feeling that the picture editors are just dying for sleb children to turn 16 so that they and their readership can start drooling over pictures of them - especially if they're wearing bikinis.

"Reach out" really makes me twitch.

Words and phrases that you can't stand...
Yorkshirelass04 · 21/10/2020 12:25

'That floor wants washing'

It's an inanimate object, it cannot want.

Bluesheep8 · 21/10/2020 13:55

yorkshirelass

Yep, I hate that too. Always have. Also hate people nowadays saying "The floor needs washed". Equally loathsome Hmm

Sennedd · 21/10/2020 14:03

Gifted. Why not given?

NellyDElephant · 21/10/2020 14:46

Touch base

Yourself instead of you

Mortified instead of angry (this may just relate to my friend who hasn’t quite grasped the definition of mortified, still makes me irrationally annoyed!)

Brought / bought being mixed up

Teach / learn being mixed up

Summat / owt / gerrit / ain’t got none (all my DP)

NellyDElephant · 21/10/2020 14:50

Abit / Alot
Could of

anuffername · 21/10/2020 15:27

Gifted. Why not given?
I've already posted this but it might be a few pages ago now, I saw giftor used in a sentence yesterday.
DynamoKev · 21/10/2020 15:31

Pre-Order
or now
Pre-Order in Advance.

Or just fucking "order" as we used to say before everything got butchered by illiterates.

DynamoKev · 21/10/2020 15:32

Also fucking pre-warn.

arrrggghhhh.

Kidneybingo · 21/10/2020 15:36

Nope instead of no. I really, really hate it. So smug sounding.

dannydyerismydad · 21/10/2020 15:52

"Stay safe"

I wish it was that fucking easy.

PumpkinetChocolat · 21/10/2020 16:15

I disagree

If I order, I want it processed and sent immediately.

If I "pre-order", it's not released yet and I am fully aware of the delay.
It might not be correct, but at least it makes everything very clear.

I am with you with the "pre-order in advance"

chrislilleyswig · 21/10/2020 19:33

I made the mistake of commenting on a thread on AIBU which is titled

"To of ripped ...::.: a new one"

Disgusting term to use and the "to of" taunts me every time I see TIO

MargotsBumpyNight · 21/10/2020 19:50

"Playing with make up'

I don't know why but it makes my stomach lurch.
