Words and phrases that you can't stand...

DilemmaADay · 18/10/2020 14:57

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

Most of the above, esp. ‘passed’, and ‘passed away’.

‘There is’ with a plural - it’s everywhere.

‘Can I get....? in e.g. a coffee shop.

Kinda. ‘It’s kinda weird but...’

Peeps

Cunt - why so MNers who’d probably call themselves feminists, use a word meaning female genitalia as a term of extreme abuse, defeats me.

However my most unreasonable paid-up pedant irritant is people referring to the traditional blow-out meal on 25th December as ‘Christmas lunch’.

It’s Christmas dinner! The main meal of the day is supposed to be dinner no matter when you have it, and if the trad turkey roast isn’t a main meal, I don’t know what is.

‘Christmas lunch’ sounds so twee and trying-to-be-correct, much the same as people saying, ‘Between you and I....’.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 20/10/2020 08:58

Talking about people who have died.
"He/she lit up the room"
Everyone says it.

A message "to the both of you"

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 20/10/2020 09:03

@BritWifeinUSA
Potty for toilet. My (American) husband says “I have to go potty”. I scream inside.

Omg I just cant stop laughing. The thought of a grown man going potty 🤣🤣

JellyBelly78 · 20/10/2020 09:06

Usually announced on Facebook:

Living my best life

Making memories

Just having a cheeky...

Tomhardyshadabath · 20/10/2020 09:32

Bubbles instead of Champagne /Prosecco
Espresso instead of Espresso
Incorrect use of "yourself" I.e. "Is there anything else that I can do for yourself today?"
Emails that start "I don't seem to have received a response..." No you haven't because I've been too fucking busy. Sometimes they say "I don't seem to have received a response from yourself" which sends me into orbit!

Tomhardyshadabath · 20/10/2020 09:34

My phone auto corrected Expresso to Espresso, it knows 😂.

Bluesheep8 · 20/10/2020 10:05

Mom”, it’s not mom, it’s mum, if you are British, it’s mum.

Not if you're in the West Midlands.

I hate:
Reaching out
So...to start a sentence
Picky bits
Nom nom nom
Super pleased/excited/happy...super anything.

Thisismynewname123 · 20/10/2020 10:30

Hun.
Can't stand it. Now my DD has started saying it, and now that I've told her how annoying I find, she's making sure to include it in every conversation!

TheoneandObi · 20/10/2020 12:19

Chorit-zo
No
It's chori-tho
I'm looking at you Paul Hollywood.

anuffername · 20/10/2020 12:22

I've just read "giftor" on another thread.

I think I am going to have to go and lie down in a darkened room Sad

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 20/10/2020 13:42

'Rainbow babies', i.e. a child born to someone who has experienced the loss of a pregnancy or death of a child.

What's worse?, a bereaved parent using a slightly trite phrase that brings them some comfort, or some ignoramus who clearly doesn't have a clue how that feels knocking them for doing so?

Low blow. Very low. Call me po-faced as much as you like, I really don't care.

FatArse123 · 20/10/2020 13:48

'Veggies' instead of 'vegetables'. it's just lazy.

I also hate the overuse of 'reaching for' when describing eating. i.e "instead of reaching for a chocalate when stressed, why not have a carrot?"

PumpkinetChocolat · 20/10/2020 13:55

I hate "rainbow baby" too. It make it sound like the baby is 2nd best.
I would specially hate it if someone was telling my child they were only born because of a previous loss. It's awful.

I also hate when people talk about MY daughter as "born sleeping" or similar. No, she is dead. She is not sleeping, she died before we could take her home.

Use whatever you want for your own loss, it makes me cringe hearing it about my own.

PumpkinetChocolat · 20/10/2020 13:56

"out of my comfort zone" drives me mad!

You are wearing a yellow jumper, you'll survive 😂 (or don't wear it at all!)

FrankskinnerscRoc · 20/10/2020 14:01

Yup
Replenish
Right?

Mum
To be fair

user1485813778 · 20/10/2020 14:13

All of the above - literally - and I do mean literally - plus
Beverage particularly alcoholic beverage
‘Piece’ referring to an article of clothing

Glad I’m not on Facebook as many of these horrors are new to me but will now haunt me forever...thanks everyone....

Mummypigisalwaysright · 20/10/2020 14:23

I hate beau ( pronounced boo). Just hate it, nails on a chalkboard. Like ' oh I love you my boo'. I will add that it is marginally ok to use on children, but grown adult men and women, no. Also hate Hun, hunny and any variation thereof.

Erinaz · 20/10/2020 14:36

Babes or Baby girl ..cringe they referring to older kids

SlopesOff · 20/10/2020 15:56

Munch/munching
People who think que means queue and bare means bear
Pooh is a bear, not a shit

(Beau is Bo, not Boo, Hun)

SVRT19674 · 20/10/2020 16:00

it´s no skin off my nose...disgusting.

MoonJelly · 20/10/2020 16:05

Being called Hun or Hunny makes me feel irrationally violent. It's always people I hardly know who do it, too.

ButNotTonight20 · 20/10/2020 16:12

I have no words/I've no words/there are no words

Usually followed by a long discussion in which they have plenty of words.

Also don't understand why people write long posts on Facebook where they abbreviate certain words or phrases but then spell out whole words that are longer.

krankykittykat · 20/10/2020 16:17

@th22 the ones I always see are 'delete if not aloud' 😬

bluebluezoo · 20/10/2020 16:20

Loads!

On here, ddog, dpony, dcat, dgerbil. It’s an abbreviation, why make a word longer!!

Doggo and pupper. Furbabies. Sisfur, and any other crap way to refer to pets.

“Nip it in the bud”. Just grates on me.

Poop. Again, why the extra p? Just call it poo. Poop sounds like a prudish american who doesn’t want to say Poo. It’s poo! It’s also toilet, loo, bog, crapper, not bathroom or restroom. I don’t want a bath- and I’ve never seen one in a US airport “bathroom”. Or a comfy seat for a rest, even if I did want to rest in a public toilet!

Zerrin13 · 20/10/2020 16:21

Another one here sharing the hatred for Christmas lunch. Its not a lunch its a dinner.
