Words and phrases that you can't stand...

What words and phrases irrationally (or rationally!) annoy you.

Mine are:
'Doggo' - DP uses this all the time, why make the word 'dog' longer
'No is a complete sentence' - just sounds so dismissive and I doubt anyone IRL would talk like this
'That doesnt work for us' - just sounds rude
'Little man' to describe a boy
'Hubby' - this is irrational as loads of people say this
'Boils my piss' - conjours horrible images in my head Grin
'Move on' when talking about a bad situation - yeah, because the person with the problem really hasn't thought about that Hmm...
'It is what it is' - one if those phrases that seemed to spawn from Love Island, I dont know why I hate it.

Any more?

In recent times the increasing use of the word 'perfect' e. g. Order something to eat in a restaurant and the waitress says 'perfect' to signal their approval Hmm just seems an inappropriate use of the word somehow. Also, as I keep telling my children, nothings perfect!

TiersTiersTiers · 21/10/2020 21:23

"rip her/him a new one"

Very odd expression. I imagine people who use that expression to be really rough.

Rainbow bridge - seriously!

Skysblue · 21/10/2020 21:29

‘Rip them a new one’ because it’s violent and gross.

‘Hun’ because it makes me think of Attila the Hun and surely if the writer means honey it should be ‘hon’?

Ltb because it’s said everytime someone has a teeny spat with their partner

“You go girlfriend.” It doesn’t make sense to me.

“Whatever” because it sounds like a 14 yr old.

“Monged out” and other casual phrases which are based on discriminatory insults

PoloNeckKnickers · 21/10/2020 21:34

'Play date'.

Misshapencha0s · 21/10/2020 22:14

Touch base
Reach out
Circle back round
Literally/basically
No way!/Shut up!
I don't want to teach my granny to suck eggs - HATE THIS sounds wrong!
Pal
Crack on
For me

sunsup1 · 21/10/2020 23:07

touch base - no, just wrong

going forward- hate this, usually said by people trying to sound more important than they are

'as I said' - meaning, I'm just going to repeat myself because my opinion's the only one that counts, makes me cringe

Dawnlassie · 21/10/2020 23:17

'like' randomly said mid sentence
'literally' when it clearly isnt

Usually spoken by morons.

Dawnlassie · 21/10/2020 23:18

Oh and 'on point' make me cringe.

SomeSmotheringDreams · 21/10/2020 23:27

Play date
Reaching out
Grab - as in a drink, a sandwich etc
Get instead of have - so in a bar when you're asked what you want, saying 'can I get' rather than 'can I have'
Curate
Brekkie
Hubby
Picky as in picky bits
Veggies for vegetables
Agree with the misuse of myself and yourself
And with Wow. Just wow.

PixelatedLunchbox · 21/10/2020 23:36

Baby daddy.

Ewwww. Just ewww Halloween Confused

Bluesheep8 · 22/10/2020 08:45

"Can I get ?" As a pp said. People who use this phrase in bars/pubs/restaurants should be shown where the thing they want to get is and get it themselves! Hmm

Reasonably sure this is a regional thing. Never noticed it until I moved to Scotland 30 years ago, where is was common. I found it jarring at first but it’s an accepted thing there.

I hear it everywhere. Bring back "please may I have?"

FatimaMunchy · 22/10/2020 09:40

Tiers, tiers, tiers Rainbow Bridge as in where dogs go when they die?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 22/10/2020 09:50

Referring to your DC on Facebook as 'little tiger cub' and 'little princess' when they are in their 20s

PumpkinetChocolat · 22/10/2020 10:12

Triggering

TheoneandObi · 22/10/2020 14:26

I'll get flamed for this (that's one!) but I actually hate DD, DS, DH etc. Sorry Mumsnet but there's something rather arch and cliquey about their usage. I adhere to the unwritten rules of course, and use them myself, but every time I do I inwardly cringe!

Chocolatehobnob9 · 22/10/2020 14:32

Some that infuriate me are :

"in the grand scheme of things"
"at the end of the day"
"picky bits"
"dive in"
"you go girl"
"divvy"

Chocolatehobnob9 · 22/10/2020 14:34

Ha @WellGoshDarnIt what about "pouring her curves" basically meaning squashing her body into a dress that's four sizes too small for her

Newkitchen123 · 22/10/2020 16:13

You're not on your own! I hate it too!
PumpkinetChocolat · 22/10/2020 16:21

DD, DS, DH is so twee and just as bad as "hun"

It's also amusingly confusing when no one can figure out if someone is talking about their Dear Niece or Dear Neighbours, about their Dear Son or Dear Sisters, and calling the man you are complaining about "dear" husband is puzzling.
Now we even have dear dogs and dear cats apparently.

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 22/10/2020 16:26

"Hollibobs" really, really want to smack people who say that!
"Crimbo"
"Bits and bobs" really grinds on me too, dunno why.

theThreeofWeevils · 22/10/2020 16:41

99% of the above. And toasty.

SlopesOff · 22/10/2020 17:42

It is what it is
I am what I am

Have just seen 'redic.' on a thread. FFS, if you are going to abbreviate a word surely you spell the bit you are using correctly, it took me a while to work out what it was meant to be.

AliceAforethought · 22/10/2020 17:46

Ah, is "redic." short for "rediculous" @SlopesOff?

That's ridiculous! Grin
