Are you going away in half term?

I have a couple of nights booked in UK. It’s likely the area will be T3 by time our half term in a couple of weeks. Happy to still go, chill in hotel room and walk in remote areas. DP says we shouldn’t go. Would you?
YABU - don’t go
YANBU - go and enjoy!

Nothing to do with schools going back and workers being told to return to offices then 🙄. We drove from one region with very low cases to another region with very low cases and self catered. Both regions less than 10 per 100k then. We didn’t have it then and don’t now thanks. No guilt here - just lovely holiday memories

sanityisamyth · 18/10/2020 21:39

I'm in Wales. Likely to be in lockdown over half term. Great!

beela · 18/10/2020 22:23

@MsTSwift yes, that's what 'part of the reason' means - there were other factors too.

I'm glad you didn't and don't have it. But mass movement of holiday makers was part of the cause of the increase in cases.

🙄

MsTSwift · 19/10/2020 06:17

Sadly it seems any vague return to normality sets it off again 🙁. I will not accept criticism for having the holiday we had though.

Fluffybutter · 19/10/2020 10:20

@beela

All those smug people who 'cleverly' took the opportunity to go away in the summer - you do know that you are part of the reason it started getting worse again at the tail end of August, don't you?
Oh did i? Even though I self isolated as I was meant to AND had a negative covid test 8 days after that ? Fuck off and don’t be so bitter
Venicelover · 19/10/2020 11:19

We are going to Greece.

Cocopogo · 19/10/2020 12:07

One thing that is in plain view for all to see is the north/south divide. We always knew it was there but these stats are pretty depressing.

In what way? I’m not being snarky - genuinely interested to understand more.
beela · 19/10/2020 20:45

I'm not bitter, but you are very defensive.

Some people went away over the summer, that's great, I hope they all had a wonderful time. But anyone kidding themselves that this was a brilliant strategy that didn't contribute (collectively, I mean, not individually) to an increase in transmission is naive at best.

Bit hard not to be when you said that those of us who went away are to blame .. how about all those who didn’t and crammed on beaches here every day ? I am anything but “naive”. The cases would have risen again regardless of international travel as lockdown just slows them, it does not prevent them .
Cocopogo · 20/10/2020 10:53

Update: I have covid so I’m not going anywhere. Karma? Feeling pretty rotten, wouldn’t wish this on anyone

Sorry op hope you are well soon Flowers

soffiee · 20/10/2020 11:08

I would go if I were you and works wonders on your mental health. I assume you will be travelling by car and will be in a remote location, so no risk at all. Just go and enjoy it while we are not in full lockdown and fingers crossed, I hope you will have nice weather at least no rain.

soffiee · 20/10/2020 11:09

@Cocopogo oh sorry to hear this. Get well soon x

beela · 20/10/2020 15:04

I didn't say that, I said part of the reason. Not all of the reason. And the only reason I said it was because some pp were very pleased with how smart they had been by going away in the summer, but didn't acknowledge that that in itself could have contributed to anything.

You are right, every bit of normal life means that cases go up, but we can't live in lockdown forever. I'm glad I'm not in charge.

I hope you feel better soon @Cocopogo

I think they were smart to go away in summer. I certainly wish we had. I don't believe that people should put their lives on hold unless told to do so by those who were supposed to be following the science.

Going away contributed no more to the upsurge than 'Eat out to help out did' or schools and colleges going back, or marches and protests, or....any number of things the government allowed to continue.

If the government wanted to eradicate the virus or at least control it, they should have closed our borders, and banned foreign/internal travel during the first lockdown. Half measures don't work.

Venicelover · 20/10/2020 16:00

The travel ban/closed borders should have continued to the present. Additionally, they should have had a functional track and trace system.

MsTSwift · 20/10/2020 16:41

I fail to see how our driving /self catering holiday to Germany and Italy put us or others more at risk than the “eat out to help out” crowd or the “head to Cornwall with the rest of country” crowd. Neither of which I am judging btw. I do think our decision was in hindsight right though - just go for it when you can things are not necessarily going to get better and I n the short term may indeed get worse.

TheDuchessofMalfy · 20/10/2020 16:48

Driving from T2 to T1 already although the T1 area has a higher COVID rate than we do.
