Are you going away in half term?

I have a couple of nights booked in UK. It’s likely the area will be T3 by time our half term in a couple of weeks. Happy to still go, chill in hotel room and walk in remote areas. DP says we shouldn’t go. Would you?
YABU - don’t go
YANBU - go and enjoy!

We just got back from a 5 day holiday yesterday. Our schools broke up earlier here in Scotland and we went to Yorkshire which was medium risk at the time according to the app. Self catering though we didn't use it except for breakfast or to eat takeaways. And we went to a theme park. It was amazing. Us and the kids loved it. We all needed the break especially my husband and middle son who had been shielding till august before going back to work and school.

We left just as they were going into T3 I believe. We calculated the risks and did what we needed to feel safe. Masks and hand sanitiser, 2m distance and stuck to the rule of 6.

I also like to stick to the rules but we were permitted to travel and kept ourselves and others safe.

Properbobbins · 17/10/2020 17:47

Didn’t think overnight stays were allowed in a tier 3 area?
Actually I just checked that and it says ‘advised against’ which is piss poor wording to be honest.

BestOption · 17/10/2020 17:49

No, I'm not. I'm in T1, I could drive to the coast in T1 & do self catering (taking everything I need) It's tempting for lots of beach walks. But a) I really don't think people should be moving around the country & b) I'd spend the whole time worrying about who has been there before me & wiping everything down.

For ME, it's just not worth it.

Gertie75 · 17/10/2020 17:51

We're hoping to go, we're in tier 1 and have booked to go to our caravan which is on a site, only problem is it's in Wales so we're waiting to see if they announce a lockdown.

Frustratingly the site is literally 10 metres over the border from Shropshire.

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 17/10/2020 17:53

We are booked next week to go to a house in Pembrokeshire from our tier one area in the southeast . Booked October last year so pre any covid fuckery

Am selfishly hoping wales announces a two week lockdown from Monday as then we have a good case for a refund as illegal to go

I feel really uneasy about going and think we will be understandably unwelcome to the locals but equally the independent cottage owner won't cancel and give a refund unless it's illegal for us to go . Self isolating or rescheduling is not acceptable for cancellation apparently

IndecentFeminist · 17/10/2020 18:01

I'm feeling a little nervous tbh, we live in a tourist destination which to now has not really need affected.

M0mmyneedswine · 17/10/2020 18:19

We are in tier 1 and bookrd for tier 2 area for half term, at the moment we are still going as already rearranged from easter

SoloMummy · 17/10/2020 18:23

@Cocopogo

Opinions seem pretty divided at the moment. I cancelled all other breaks this year but getting to point where I think a couple of nights away will do us all the world of good. DP is very much a need to follow ALL rules ALL the time kind of person with anything. Likely to be T3 to T3 area if I had to guess which then makes you wonder if there should be free movement between similar Tier areas as there is say in Liverpool, you can move around in Liverpool but no advised to go in or out of borders but if next border goes in to T3 then is it still advised to stay put?
I'd say its not a split poll.

I think that tbh anyone planning to still travel in half term is unreasonable and is incredibly selfish regardless of tier level and whether planning on being Socially distanced, you're still in another area, breathing, touching and having some level of interaction. Thess week trips /holidays will inevitably further Stoke the covid fires and I cannot understand how anyone can think that is an unacceptable payoff to get away!
I'm actually hoping we follow Wales and NI and make the announcement by Tuesday Wednesday.

Are you going away in half term?
Longwhiskers14 · 17/10/2020 18:28

If you're in Tier 3, you have to behave under Tier 3 rules wherever you are. So that means no going to pubs or restaurants, only travelling for work or education, no mixing households. So yes, you might be going on holiday to another T3 region, but you're going to be so limited by what you do, is it worth it?

IMNOTSHOUTING · 17/10/2020 18:29

Would it be worth it though? Wouldn't you want to eat out? What if it's pouring down the entire week.

I8toys · 17/10/2020 18:32

Surely all these people heading to Tier 1 tourist attractions will spread it? I feel sorry for North Norfolk, Cornwall, Devon where its low as told by Boris!

Lindy2 · 17/10/2020 18:36

As things stand we would be travelling from a T1 area to another T1 area. We have a very remote cottage booked and intend to keep ourselves to ourselves mostly walking in the hills.

I'd be uncertain about going if either area became T2 and wouldn't go if either became T3.

Aragog · 17/10/2020 18:36

We should have been going to the Highlands. We are Tier 2.
We have cancelled simply because I now have Covid and DH will be in his SI period still.

As it is we can now claim on our travel insurance for the flights. Before this we couldn't and would have lost the money potentially. The accommodation was on a refundable basis, bar one night.

Had this to happened we would have still gone. We were to stay in a SC flat and would have been just the two of us, and no close contact with others. We wouldn't have been able to claim either so would have just lost money.

Travel is permitted in all tiers, just not advised.

Very glad we went ahead with gorgeous long Italian summer holiday. Was slightly surprised at the number of people not going in summer but pushing back to October “when things will be better“ . Seize the day. Going nowhere now

FlyingFlamingo · 17/10/2020 19:03

It’s looking like in Wales we are going back into lockdown from Friday, and even if that doesn’t happen I can’t legally leave my local area, not that I would want to anyway.

I read research this week that tracked Covid infections and the different genomes - it interestingly showed that in rural areas cases were brought in by people travelling there, this did not appear to be the case in urban areas where there was more local transmission. This has led me to believe that anyone leaving high risk areas for rural communities is quite frankly very selfish, sorry.

millymollymoomoo · 17/10/2020 19:06

I wouldn’t go to a t3 simply because things won’t be open! Otherwise I’d have no probs going anywhere

Bailey0703 · 17/10/2020 19:26

What a great idea - NOT !!

Travel from an area with high infection to an area with lower infection ..

Brilliant . FGS are people SO lacking in brain power not to be able to work that out for themselves? Do you really need a law /guidance/advice to tell you it's a ridiculous, anti-social plan ?

No doubt everyone thinking this is a good idea is also moaning that this 'thing' will never get under control . !

It matters not a jot if you are going to Walk in 'deserted areas' because on the way there you will touch Petrol pumps, door handles , be in food shops .. really isn't hard.

But always good to hear why YOUR justification doesn't really apply.

TravellingSpoon · 17/10/2020 19:30

We are.

Travelling up to Northumberland to stay in a lodge. Will do some walks, cycling and maybe a trip to the beach. Wont be visiting any pubs or restaurants and so the only public place we will go is the supermarket.

I have tried to make it as safe as possible but we need a break.

ulanbatorismynextstop · 17/10/2020 19:34

My mum was on her way to Blackpool yesterday morning, nearly there and she got a call that the whole holiday was cancelled due to them going into tier 3.

I live in Blackpool and hotels haven't been forced to close, some are just deciding that is what they are doing to do because guests are cancelling left right and centre.

Unfortunately because hotels can't claim financial assistance this time round from the government because they haven't been forced to close, some are choosing to stay open because they can't afford to close.

Same here!
blue25 · 17/10/2020 21:02

Yes, got a cottage booked for the week. Really can’t wait!

DelilahfromDevon · 17/10/2020 21:52

We had a week in Oman booked for they’ve closed the borders. So we aren’t going anywhere. Can’t be bothered looking into other things and don’t want to risk having to quarantine on the way back.

MajesticWhine · 17/10/2020 21:56

Just cancelled going to Pembrokeshire. Didn't technically have to cancel under the rules, but felt it was the right thing to do.
