I appreciate that it this isn't the most pressing topic at the moment, but does anyone agree/disagree?

Martin and Shirley Kemp have written a book about their life together https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shirlie-Martin-Kemp-Love-Story-ebook/dp/B088TR8NL9/ref=nodl_ There's an I nteresting article about it in today's Telegraph

Spandau always seemed a bit cheesy to me and Duran a bit cooler with their arty videos and interesting lyrics.

80sballetgirl · 17/10/2020 18:36

User name may be a give away but I was a huge Spandau fan!! I still followed Tony & see him live whenever possible - his voice is incredible 💜 In the 80’s I loved Steve Norman - sigh 😍 Martin Kemp was too pretty for me but as a silver fox he is pretty yummy 😂

Standrewsschool · 17/10/2020 18:51

Spandeau Ballet for me, although Duran Duran videos were more memorable.

noideaatallreally · 17/10/2020 18:55

John Taylor is still a sex god and Duran Duran are still making amazing music. All You Need is Now (I know its a few years old) is an absolute masterpiece.

I have seen them twice in concert - they still got it.

I like Spandau but I love DD.

DollyDoneMore · 17/10/2020 19:01

Duran Duran’s music was rank. Wild Boys. Union of the Snake. The fucking Re-re-reflex. View To A Kill. Le Bon had a God-awful whiny voice, too. (Rio, I will give you as their one decent pop record.)

Spandau Ballet were cheesy as fuck but effortlessly more funky (Chant No 1), quirky (To Cut A Long Story Short), anthemic (Gold) and schmaltzy (True) than Duran Duran had a clue how to be.

OutOntheTilez · 17/10/2020 19:02

Duran Duran by far. I knew all their songs and had all their albums back when there were albums. Saw them in concert four times (1984, 1987, 1993, and 2016), the last time in Brooklyn, NY when my husband took me to see them as a surprise.

And Simon is still so hot.

I was in LOVE with Simon. Could never take my eyes off that man.

Duran Duran 😍😍😍😍

ABC were fantastic, but Psychedelic Furs were even better.

TurquoiseDragon · 17/10/2020 19:18

I soent a short while around the age of 15 likeing Duran Duran, disliking Spandau Ballet.

Then I recovered and went back to being a metalhead. Grin

Crunched · 17/10/2020 19:21

Sorry DollyDoneMore
You are very wrong.
The fucking Re-re-reflex

It is the fucking Re-Flex-flex-flex-flex-flex-flex.

MoiraRoseisupSchittCreek · 17/10/2020 19:26

Le Bon had a God-awful whiny voice, too

He did. I'd choose SB over DD but WetWetWet were the best! Martin Pellow's voice and sheer gorgeousness.

winterinmadeira · 17/10/2020 19:28

Duran definitely!

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 17/10/2020 19:40

I was a total Durannie but I think Spandau have aged better. Martin Kemp is still gorgeous whereas John T looks weird.

Redcrayons · 17/10/2020 19:48

@Standrewsschool 😍 two fine looking men.

Love Martin and Shirlie. If I ever read he’s up to no good, I’d kneecap him myself on lovely Shirlie’s behalf.

Holothane · 17/10/2020 19:50

Duran Duran especially the first three albums I’m 54 now and love the As the lights goes down concert.

musicposy · 17/10/2020 19:51

I can’t vote because both are awesome.

At 16 I’d have chosen Spandau, whereas my sister was a definite Durannie. I just love listening to both though.

musicposy · 17/10/2020 19:57

@MalorieSnooty oh my goodness, yes! So many amazing bands. I think it was the absolute best era for music and don’t think any decade has come close since.

Zerrin13 · 17/10/2020 20:47

I was a teenager in the 80's and it was an amazing time to be young. I definitely preferred Duran Duran over Spandau but my real obsession was Japan.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 17/10/2020 21:12

And David Sylvian with Riyuchi Sakamoto.

I still love 80s music.
