just that really - there's one near me but I've never been into it - is it good, is it expensive, do you use it? Looking for recommendations

Iceland are the unsung heroes of the grocery chains.

We started getting their food delivered as well as the usual Tesco and Sainsbury stuff, and have found their 'Farmers' Market ' pork crackling joint which cooks from frozen, £5, superb, also their honey glazed gammon. Their prawns are generally excellent, get the North Sea ones not the farmed.

When their Christmas food arrives, I hope to grab their Crocembouche kit; we have had it for the last two years, everyone loves it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/10/2020 16:11

You are always garenteed a next day delivery, unlike other supermarkets.

ReggieCat · 17/10/2020 16:18

Would it be so difficult to pop in and have a look? Or do you think it's somehow beneath you to do that?

ARealActualKaren · 17/10/2020 16:22

One opened near me recently and I didn't go in as we don't eat a lot of frozen food in our house and that's all I thought it was!

They do fresh fruit and veg and while I don't buy it from there I do buy yoghurts, crisps, cereals, sliced bread, tinned stuff and wine! All brand stuff and good prices

GameSetMatch · 17/10/2020 16:27

There was a ‘Iceland’ documentary on recently, looked great, the owner was a greenpeace member who seemed like he cared, I thought I’d give it a go, I walked in the shop with my trolly and out the other side not buying a thing, it looked dirty and old fashioned nothing looked appetising.

Spongeface · 17/10/2020 16:31

They didn't have this magic pizza... Have a few stuffed crust ones to try anyway....
Used to shop there years ago

Tigerstripe20 · 17/10/2020 16:39

Years ago my summer job was in a chicken factory we used to pack chicken fillets for Sainsbury's after break they would change the labelling machine to Iceland ...Same chicken different labels
It is easy to check where the meat comes from Google the small number on the pack ( small oval with 4 numbers in )

slashlover · 17/10/2020 16:40

They do the Slimming World meals too (controversial on here but I quite like some of them) and their vegetarian/vegan range is quite good. I'm waiting for their Christmas stuff to come in because I always like their veggie options and they're MUCH cheaper than M&S. They always seem to have the Cravendale milk on promotion which is good because I can buy 4L and it lasts for ages.

SenorFrog · 17/10/2020 16:41

We don't eat much frozen food but I have a big love of their King Prawn Alfredo, I have it about once a month. I usually pick up some other bits while I'm there. It's definitely worth a visit.

They also banned palm oil from all if the products in store, so that's a big plus point.

BlusteryShowers · 17/10/2020 16:44

I really like their frozen diced chicken breast. I cook a lot from scratch but it's great for a quick stir fry or basic curry on a busy school night.

PleasantVille · 17/10/2020 16:54

@Poppingnostopping

Are you actually an advertising person from Iceland, trying to promote them on the internet so asking a disingenuously open question that people will then answer positively? If so- clever!
I think you're right, no-one who has the smarts to register on here and start a thread could be stupid enough to ask this as an actual question they don't know the answer to.

Why would any need recommendations of what to buy at Iceland anyway, go in and have a look, I might hate their fish fingers but I wouldn't expect your taste to be the same as an example only I have no idea if they even do their own brand of fish fingers.

Boredbumhead · 17/10/2020 16:58

They do fab frozen salmon, pizzas, frozen veg, frozen croissants. You could do a comprehensive weekly shop in lidl.

FAQs · 17/10/2020 16:58

They are actually quite an ethical company, but their stores are not attractive and their image is still much in the 1980s frozen meat pancake reputation.

Hopefully it’ll pick up as Lidl and Aldi has, 5-6 years ago people were very snobby about hem but then they upped their Christmas range, clever marketing and suddenly become the ‘middle class’ favourite.

Boredbumhead · 17/10/2020 16:59

Iceland I mean?!

Lovesabadboy · 17/10/2020 17:05

They were the only shop that we could get delivery slots with during Lockdown and they were excellent! Very few replacements and, once they even emailed saying that they were not happy with their service and so gave us the whole shop for free!

Their bread products are fab - lots of ciabatta, panini, croissants etc. Fresh veg has been great (apart from a squashed bag of spinach on one occasion!) As a pp said, their pizzas have been excellent and their fake Magnums are better than real Magnums!
I can recommend their halloumi too!

We have been really impressed and have continued using their delivery service alongside our Aldi shop and I can't see that changing any time soon.

bugaboo218 · 17/10/2020 17:15

Iceland do frozen food, fresh food, store cupboard basics, cleaning stuff and treats (junk food).

I like their frozen sea bass, prawns, no bull (vegan) range, basic frozen veg, their own brand stuff crust pizza and their deluxe range of ready meals, which are much cheaper than Sainsbury's or Waitrose. All of the above has tasted nice.

Their own brand ice cream / lollies are also good and so is the frozen Greggs range for a treat.

I really do not get the dislike that some people have towards Iceland. It is not all twizzlers and processed food if that's what you are thinking.

Same here! We hadn't used them before, and hadn't realised they delivered, but we've stuck with them.
CoffeeandCroissant · 17/10/2020 17:37

They also sell a rather nice Portuguese red wine. Wine Wine Wine Grin

formerbabe · 17/10/2020 17:40

I was shocked when I first went to Iceland, I thought it would be really down market but the food is surprisingly good and there are some hidden gems. The luxury moussaka ready meal is amazing...easily as good as an m&s or waitrose one. Loads of good frozen fruit and veg. My ds loves the chocolate fondant puddings.

BikeRunSki · 17/10/2020 17:41

I’ve just tried to register for deliveries. They don’t deliver to my postcode. I guess that’s why I was t aware that they delivered!

garlicbread82 · 17/10/2020 18:08

They also sell biscuits, crisps, and sweet treats. I allow DCs to choose one item from the the sweet aisle each week. That's why mums go to Iceland!

And quite nice frozen macarons too. 2 packs of 10 for £5.

Clevs · 17/10/2020 18:30

I'm sure years ago there used to be less fresh/store cupboard stuff than there is now. I remember going in there as a kid and it was mainly just frozen food. They seem to have expanded their range in recent years.

Flaunch · 17/10/2020 18:33

Iceland do some fantastic stuff, go and have a look.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 17/10/2020 18:37

I don't buy takeaways any more. Just spend £10 in Iceland for much nicer Pizza etc. Like every supermarket there's good stuff and bad, but it improves all the time and is one of the most ethical supermarkets around. They also win in the top companies to work for fairly regularly.
My recommendations are the pakora fish bites, gino pizza, stuffed crust pizza, fruit and veg is great value and the salmon and broccoli risotto is nice for a quick tea.
