To think 2021 holidays are doomed?

Been on the phone to TUI again this morning trying to find out if the free amendment policy is going to be extended past April. They're insistent everything will be normal. Surely not? How with everything ramping up again can 2021 holidays possibly go ahead?

Iftheclouds · 17/10/2020 18:03

I think the early 2021 will be a no go but possibly some allowed in the summer months although it’s awfully hard to say at this present time.

Terrace58 · 17/10/2020 18:08

I don’t understand why anyone is booking regular holidays for 2021. Leisure time needs to be reimagined for the foreseeable future.

Delatron · 17/10/2020 18:19

People managed to get away this summer!
I don’t blame people really. Companies are being quite flexible

Levatrice · 17/10/2020 18:22

@ChristmasinJune they cancelled for next year already? Where were you going?

namechange34 · 17/10/2020 18:31

@JassyRadlett same here, haven't been back to aus since april 2019 and will be such a long time for the grandparents to go without seeing the DC. Afraid that covid has probably killed any chance of DH agreeing to move to Aus, he is horrified at the way Aus have treated citizens abroad and where I have family in Melbourne

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 17/10/2020 18:45

I managed two foreign holidays this year. Feel very lucky. All within the rules.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/10/2020 18:53

I was planning a trip to see friends who live in Montana next year but will be putting it back a year and see how things progress through 2021.

What is a regular holiday?

We are obviously lacking in imagination. We managed do go abroad in summer 2020 and 2021 is booked too.

Mumofsend · 17/10/2020 19:10

Ours is booked for France fot August 2021. Fingers crossed!

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 19:11

@namechange34 Ah it’s just so shit isn’t it? Feels so awful to be a citizen where your country won’t let you back in. I’ve got colleagues whose visas are up early next year and are having to adopt absolutely mad strategies of flight booking on the assumption they’ll be bumped multiple times.

We did a deal when we got married that we’d live here and visit Australia at least once a year. It takes up most of our annual leave but that was always the deal. And my parents usually come here once a year as well so this is already the longest we’ve gone without seeing each other. The thought of another year is just so grim.

Interestingly it’s probably pushed my DH closer to emigrating but he’s always been pretty willing. I’ve always been the hold out because I know how hard it can be for spouses when we’re ok here! And his family are not mobile and mine still travel pretty easily. Until sodding 2020 anyway....

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 19:15

I think it will be a a case of booking things last minute though.

Or more tourism offerings with flexible terms. After our first summer holiday fell through (interrrailing through Europe 🤦‍♀️) we booked a holiday in the Netherlands where everything could be cancelled up until a day or two prior with no penalties (BA flight, hotel in Amsterdam, Centerparcs). We did cancel when quarantine came in a week beforehand and ended up in Scotland instead.

I imagine terms like that are the only way a lot of places will get bookings.

notimagain · 17/10/2020 19:18

@Delatron

I think they’ll end up doing more testing before and after trips and shorter quarantine so 7 days. I thought I read they were planning that anyway.

The travel industry has been pushing for that for some time but it's making slow progress.

I can empathise. We usually spend a part of every year in Australia and we were supposed to have friends from Oz visit us this summer.

Heaven knows when normal service will be resumed.

Ultimatecougar · 17/10/2020 19:25

Sadly there's no guarantee even UK breaks will happen. I've had to cancel my half term break in the UK only 2 hours drive away because I'm on local lockdown and can't leave my county.

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 19:25

Yes, the late 2021/early 2022 in the Budget really threw me today!

Mary46 · 17/10/2020 19:32

We have credit note as Spain was cancelled. Cant see next year flights going. Pity. Miss the sunshine

TravellingSpoon · 17/10/2020 19:36

I have moved my summer holiday from this year to next October. Am keeping everything crossed it will go ahead.

I have flights to Copenhagen booked for April but I doubt that will happen.

namechange34 · 17/10/2020 19:36

@JassyRadlett DH has also said vaccine or no vaccine he can't imagine being so close to other people for 24 hours in a plane again so we need to get saving for business class whenever it is we can travel again.

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 19:39

@namechange34 Oh no!

We’re both 50% sure we’ve had it and are fairly relaxed anyway so I think we’ll be on a plane as soon as there’s one going. Bless my easygoing DH with his very relaxed approach to germs!

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 19:40

Mind you much will depend on either Singapore Airlines ever refunds our flights from this coming Christmas - we’re covered by the waiver but very slow processing times....

Littlepond · 17/10/2020 19:43

I have a holiday to Italy booked for February next year. I’m not hopeful ☹️

ResplendentAutumn · 17/10/2020 19:44

I'm very confident that things will be settled down by March.
The weather will be on our side, hopefully, school holiday lock downs from the October to February will help.
Vaccines will be well on the way, other treatments...

ChristmasinJune · 17/10/2020 19:49
@ChristmasinJune they cancelled for next year already? Where were you going?
We were flying into Split and they've stopped running flights there. I don't think it's directly COVID related.
I was delighted though as I only "paid" the balance on this year's holiday by accident so had to transfer to next year rather than lose my money.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 17/10/2020 20:03

We managed a really lovely holiday this year but it was booked before the pandemic hit and I am happy not to book anything else for now. The stress of monitoring the developing situation, having to rebook most of our flights after cancellations, last minute quarantine for a host etc - it was stressful. We have cancelled a ski holiday for next February that we booked in 2019, and will wait and see how things develop before booking again. I don’t want to rack up a stack of vouchers or deal with the various change policies and charges of airlines.

ScottishDream · 17/10/2020 20:08

We have family in Cornwall so that will be our holiday next year - camping and visiting them. We've only taken the children on a plane once and I swore never again, didn't think covid would make it a reality. But I can't imagine travel going back to the way it was.
