To think 2021 holidays are doomed?

Been on the phone to TUI again this morning trying to find out if the free amendment policy is going to be extended past April. They're insistent everything will be normal. Surely not? How with everything ramping up again can 2021 holidays possibly go ahead?

We didn't go away this year so I've booked a week in the UK for next July. We can cancel with a full refund up to 2 weeks before going, so I will be able to do that if things are no better by then. Wouldn't consider going further afield right now.

hitchhikingghost · 17/10/2020 14:17

Was supposed to go to Florida with SAS next week, flight was cancelled but no money back so far and it’s not seem likely we’ll get any either. It’s shit. Will not book anything for next year, I’m guessing 2022 if we’re lucky.

hitchhikingghost · 17/10/2020 14:18

*it does not seem likely

Holidayaddict · 17/10/2020 14:37

If we do go abroad, it will be to a relative's holiday home, if she hasn't sold it by then (unlikely). I wouldn't be risking booking anything else. We were actually meant to be going there last year but decided quite early on not to go and grabbed a UK cottage while there was still availability. Will employ the same tactic next year.

Really thought Covid would've been history by now. How wrong I was!

ChristmasinJune · 17/10/2020 14:43

I've just had my Jet2holidays holiday for August 2021 cancelled and been offered a full refund. I'm relived tbh and already have a simple UK holiday booked that I know we'll enjoy.
We don't know what next summer will be like but if I had to guess I'd say holidays will be running but will still be chaotic and uncertain so I'd rather give it a miss.

Considering my dad caught Covid 19 on 13th March on a two and a half hour flight back from Spain I won't be risking flying anytime soon. The irony of this is that my mother had bought 4 surgical masks in Ireland before they flew out. Guess where the masks were on the plane? Her handbag! She wasn't sitting near my dad on the plane though thanks to Ryanair. My dad now has to have a Echocardiograph of his heart as he's been getting dizzy spells and slow pulse rate. The Cardiologist said the fact he wears a Cpap machine at night, and the fact he increased his steroids, as advised by his Endocrinologist, because he was ill saved his life.

Squirrelblanket · 17/10/2020 14:48

We had Mexico booked for April this year and it's been rearranged for May next year. At this point we're hoping that it will get cancelled as we just want our money to rebook once things are more settled. We're expecting this to be 2022 at the earliest. We don't really want to move it forward again as things are looking dodgy for my husband's job so we'd rather have the money back in our pocket just in case.

Hope your dad's OK. How do you know he caught it on the flight?
Giggorata · 17/10/2020 14:54

I managed to get my ferry trip to see family in the Netherlands in August postponed for one year. I wonder if it will all happen in August 2021.

ZaraW · 17/10/2020 14:55

mayflowerapplepie my friends aren't in Australia they want to travel home.

Hope your Dad is OK but given it seems the disease was pretty widespread in Spain in March I have to ask same question as Newkitchen 123 asked - can I ask how has it been established that your Dad definitely caught Covid on the flight/on the aircraft?

HiGunny · 17/10/2020 15:06

Well I'm in Ireland, and in my area we've only had 2 months since March that we've been allowed travel outside our county so I won't be booking any foreign holidays for 2021! And anywhere I book here will need to have a good cancellation policy as we keep getting put under restrictions with little notice.

Feargalthecat · 17/10/2020 15:07

I've booked to go to Turkey in June 2021. I had a lovely family holiday there in September which was bliss despite many people telling us that the holiday wouldn't happen this year.

Travel is still possible, although I'm realistic enough to accept my plans may be changed, I still have something to look forward to.

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 15:12

I’m Australian in the UK. My kids are already gutted that they won’t see their grandparents this year (we were meant to be there for Christmas) and are desperately hoping for summer 2021 but I’m worried it will be much longer.

If the visa for DH wasn’t such a huge expense and faff and risk I think we’d move permanently. The border closure may push us over the edge.

Nottherealslimshady · 17/10/2020 15:16

We haven't bothered booking anything. I things improve then we'll look for last minute breaks but I really hope to god we'll b back to normality by April, this is soul destroying.

Petitmum · 17/10/2020 15:26

I am hopeful for a trip to Spain next July. I have booked return flights for the four of us with BA at the bargain price of £330 and can amend them free of charge. I have also booked a lovely detached villa with a huge pool away from it all in the countryside, free cancellation until four weeks before.

Heyahun · 17/10/2020 15:30

Not in their interest to keep extending though - they have to hope next year will go ahead! They will prob try extend if possible - but tbh if next Summers season is cancelled they prob won’t survive !

catnoir1 · 17/10/2020 15:33

I'm away in July next year. If it happens it happens, if it doesn't, it doesn't.

notimagain · 17/10/2020 15:34

Who?

MaryShelley1818 · 17/10/2020 15:36

We'd usually have 3 trips booked at least by now (just cheapy Easyjet deals) but I'm pregnant and due our baby in January so won't be planning anything.

We do have a week in Paris booked for September but it's flights only and was rearranged from flight booked in 2019. We hope to get to Disneyland Paris for our DDs first holiday but won't book until closer to the time as wearing a mask 24/7 is a deal breaker for us.
We're hoping for a staycation in the UK in June to take DS to Harry Potter studios and maybe a trip to Chessington. We've also just postponed Winter Wonderland at CenterParcs from this December to next year.
Fingers crossed it all happens, as we really need a better year (as does everyone I imagine).

Bloody hell I hope not. I feel for those working in travel and tourism.

The travel agency 😂 @notimagain

Delatron · 17/10/2020 17:52

I think they’ll end up doing more testing before and after trips and shorter quarantine so 7 days. I thought I read they were planning that anyway.

We can’t have two summers as complete right offs! The tourism industry would collapse.

I think it will be a a case of booking things last minute though.
