why is it that when you want to sell something that you paid lots for, people think they can have it for next to nought?

thanks lady - gonna do that tomorrow, see if it makes a difference.

Wasn't having a go about Freecycle - it's just I'm a group owner and work very hard and personally would rather give to a good home but then I dont spend so much in the first place!

Serious, serious question though - why £600 for a system? I know you didnt pay for it but did you point it out or did they just think it's expensive so it must be good? Do not rate M&P personally.

moremoneythansense · 13/10/2007 00:30

Nataz26,

I started another thread on here about cost of pushchairs, and I didn't realise yours was like this.

My thread was in relation to the wanted threads recently. Hope you don't think I'm being mean

For you, have you tried your local free-ads? Often see names prams in mine, may be worth a go.

elkiedee · 13/10/2007 01:26

I think I can see where everyone's coming from. My mum picked up two travel systems on freecycle for me and baby due in April, born May, whereas her husband's daughter bought her first baby born in March a £500 system. We're both moving over to much more lightweight buggies, and tbh I wouldn't spend £600 on a pram/travel system now I know that I don't need to. I don't drive myself. Sadly, I think you're going to find that anyone is going to either want to buy new or get something for a small amount of money.

It's no good though to tell you now that that money could have been spent some other way though is it, nataz? (sorry nutty).

I'd be inclined to agree with the poster who suggested keeping the pram and finding some other way of getting the money you need or dealing with the reason you need it (whether that's debt hassles or to pay for something else).

If that's not an option, you've had useful advice on how to re-present your valuable item for sale on ebay, and I hope it helps you to get something closer to the amount you wanted.

Local classified ads may be worth a go, as someone might be willing to pay more for convenience of being able to pick it up in the car and you would keep more of the sale price than on ebay, where you have to pay a cut of what you get to ebay/paypal.

Good luck.

Nataz26 · 13/10/2007 10:42

We looked at lots of prams and m&p seemed a good one. We never expected it to be paid for us, or to have to sell it. But thats the way things go. Pretty much everything else we either got of ebay or friends. But I dont see why thats even important.
Thank you to everyone who gave good advice on selling it. And yes I'd love to keep it. And with hindsight I would never have got it in the first place. Got an old silver cross of a friend and its far better even it is over ten years old. Just think its worth more than people are offering, thats all

I think everyone has been a bit harsh on nappynutty

she is the only one talking sense

the other day there was a whole thread dedicated to trying to find a really expensive pram because someone's family wanted to get it for them and they wanted to blow the budget as a result

I suggested a cheaper one and the family put money in the child trust fund for the baby

god was I treated with scorn for such a ridiculous suggestion

is it so unsual for grandparents to want to buy a good pram for their first grandchild?

i didn't think so, 11 years ago my parents paid over £500 for a silver cross wayfarer with carrycot, car seat and alla ccessories. i looked at cheaper brands ( ithink at the time argos were selling a 3in1 pram for £200) but my mum insisted on buying a good reliable brand name such as silver cross.

unfortuanltey i became a bit of a pram geek too after workign part time in mothercare when ds1 was little, and i love prams, but would never comment on how little or how much people spend.

i doubt if the op's grandmother would have put the £500 in savings for the child if she ahd picked a cheaper pram as she wa soffering to buy the pram they wanted regardless of cost.

the m&p pramette is a good pram, but things aren't fetching good prices on ebay right now, either try the freeads or adtrader, local papers or even a car boot sale!!! hard to beleive, but i took my quinny 4 to a car boot with me and put a sign with the price i wanted, 4 people approached em to say they didn't have cash on them but could they take my number and come round in the week to collect. i didn't think anyone would call but three of them did and i sold to the first one who came round, so its all worth a try.

nappynuttynormabutty · 13/10/2007 17:47

Ok she can't go back in time but as far as I can see she's come on here saying "My parents gave me a brand new £600 pram, my friend gave me another pram, why won't someone buy my pram?"

Is it not a bit ironic to expect other people to pay lots for her pram when she hasn't even bought one. Perhaps everyone else's parents are buying them a pram or perhaps they're all getting them free off their friends.

FllightAttendant · 13/10/2007 17:56

LVOC, I remember a few weeks ago when M&P were selling off the Afternoon Tea pramette at £250. Wish I'd got one now, as I could have made a bomb reselling but I am rubbish at reselling and only buy stuff I will use, so prob just as well!

chocolateteapot · 13/10/2007 18:00

I can see where Nappynutty is coming from as well, but what is done is done.

My personal view is that people are beginning to get a bit pushed for cash at the moment with big increases in mortgages coming off low fixed rate, increasing costs of food etc and some hefty credit card bills to pay.

New things come at a premium, you lose a lot the minute you buy things. With things not really selling I don't think you can blame people having a go at getting things at a cheap price, after all, you just say no.

FrannyandZooey · 13/10/2007 18:00

I think YABU, yes

the fair price is the price that people are prepared to pay

you're getting hacked off because nobody wants to pay a lot for your old pram? People are not OBLIGED to buy your stuff, you know. If the price you want for it is fair, then somebody will buy it. Otherwise, you are asking too much.

Lulumama · 13/10/2007 18:06

why don;t you list it with a reserve or as a buy it now?

people tend to use ebay to get a bargain or to get hold of something limited edition, not to pay over the odds for something second hand they could buy easily in the shops for a little bit more..

why not do a car boot sale and sell lots of other stuff, you will get imemdaite cash for that

Nataz26 · 13/10/2007 18:45

All i can say is heaven forbid anyone one of you wants to sell something in the future.

Note to self - dont post a message on here unless you expect to receive negative and some what hurtful responses.

Thanks Lady and alike - have taken your suggestions on board - car boot sale sounds like great idea.

Wont be posting on here again - never expected such a personal attack...

i saw a good as new JANE trael system for sale at £75 !!!!! in a second hand shop near me.....they were £400 new!

nappynuttynormabutty · 13/10/2007 19:21

I'm sorry if you've found my comments hurtful. It's not meant to be a personal attack. You've started a thread asking if you're being unreasonable, I think you are. If you'd wanted to know what you could do to get a better price for your pram you could have started a thread asking for advice.

I agree with ChocolateTeapot that a lot of people don't have as much money at the moment and with xmas coming up people are probably not wanting to spend lots on second hand stuff iyswim.

FlightAttendant · 13/10/2007 20:02

Nataz, a bit shocked at the way this thread has gone...I can't see why people are hacked off with you. You must be very upset. I'm sorry you've had this response. Usually people are very nice round here, not sure what happened here.

FlightAttendant · 13/10/2007 20:02

Mimi - where? where?!!

FlightAttendant · 13/10/2007 20:04

JAM, cool post at 14:22

Nightynight · 13/10/2007 20:33

nataz - I cant believe you got criticised for this thread!
I would try and hold out for the 150, but if you cant get it then I guess you'll have to settle for less.
listen to LadyVict though, she is the resident mumsnet pram buying/selling expert!

expatinscotland · 13/10/2007 20:54

She's not come back, has she?

Gawd, I hate selling stuff online.

It sucks for both parties.

Nataz26 · 13/10/2007 21:13

I think it is very common to get a very expensive pram and then find it isn't really suitable, for instance the chassis is lovely for a newborn but the wheels don't swivel and it won't go in your car! So you need another.
I think it's very hard to predict everything you'll need it to do while still pregnant.
My plan was to get a second hand one, try it, if any good then buy the new version...I seem to have had an awful lot of second hand ones though!
In fact I only bought one new one, which cost about £220, for Ds1 - I spent the next few weeks trying to sell it as I felt so guilty, then ended up using it solidly for 3 more years as it was brilliant. That was just luck.
I've probably spent over £600 altogether on the ones I've now got for Ds2, but if you added up what they would have been new, it would reach into thousands and I have something suitable for most needs - some fit in the car, some are great for his first year or so, one is marvellous for a big toddler. I find this works better than having just one that gets mucked up very quickly from new and doesn't meet all your needs.
