Who Else Cannot Stand Alcohol and Never Drinks It?

IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 14:27

I really hate the taste and never have any urge to drink anything containing alcohol (friends always try to tell me its just because you've not tried gin/Baileys/a certain cocktail/some wine/whatever). I never have the urge to drink it as it tastes unpleasant to me, and remains unpleasant tasting even if I do get drunk. I get very flushed in the face on the very rare occasions I force myself to drink to be sociable and either feel sleepy or become warlike and want to fight like a God, in every case I wake up the next morning feeling normal and have never experienced a hangover effect. But I just don't want to drink.

It seems that the whole world is about looking forward to a drink, prosecco, wine, whatever. I just can't stand the attraction. Is there anyone else out there who feels the same? (I have no problem with people who do enjoy drinking and I enjoy going out and partying, I just stay sober)

Richard E Grant feels the same way as you. Read about the making of Withnail and I.

YouDidWHATNow · 16/10/2020 16:30

I'm 25 and I have drank maybe 3 times in the last 7 years? I don't enjoy it. I don't like the taste, I don't like the feeling of being tipsy and I like to drive too much. I would much rather have a pepsi max or a coffee! If I've had a stressful day, I come home and crack out the decent tea bags and that does me well.Means I'm very popular to go to parties though as a guaranteed designated driver! All my friends say it's because you haven't had XYZ, nope, I've tried most drinks. It's because I don't like alcohol

firstimemamma · 16/10/2020 16:31

Teetotal for nearly 4 years and I love it! Don't miss drinking at all. You're not alone!

londongirl12 · 16/10/2020 16:31

I don't drink, it plays havoc with my IBS so I don't bother. It's not worth the tummy pains all night!! Confused
But I always have a good time when I'm out, I'm the last one on the dance floor! And don't feel shit the next day!!
But my god, the pressure from everyone else does my head in!!!! Why on earth does it matter to them what I drink?? I'm quite happy with my appletiser thanks, how does that affect you?!?!?

LongPauseNoAnswer · 16/10/2020 16:34

YANBU I never liked it, it’s all vile IMO.

It all tastes nasty and it’s burns! People are always say that you get used to it. I don’t want to get used to something that tastes disgusting, burns on the way down and effectively poisons me.

I’ve never felt left out, like I was missing out on something. Not even during my wild teenage years.

elliejjtiny · 16/10/2020 16:36

Me, totally went off it after being pregnant with dc4. Tastes like something you clean the bathroom with.

2pinkginsplease · 16/10/2020 16:36

Each to their own. I love having an occasional drink when out with my dh or friends. It makes me feel relaxed.

I dont drink every week, sometimes I dont drink for months but I do like a wee vodka and coke or two.

My father was an alcoholic as is my brother. My mum doesnt drink but I do enjoy a sociable drink though can go out and not drink.

Plussizejumpsuit · 16/10/2020 16:40

I don't personally think there is a lot of peer pressure to drink
I think it massively depends who your peers are though. I don't drink very much. Both not often and very little when I do drink. I've never felt like press that I should drink more from friends.

boredwithmylastusername · 16/10/2020 16:44

Me , occasionally I will have a glass of wine but usually a sip or two and it's given to DP to finish , don't like the taste , don't enjoy the sensation of alcohol in my Body

Sooverthemill · 16/10/2020 16:46

I rarely drink. Mainly because as a student I got my drink spiked in a pub and it totally put me off. I loathe the ‘must get drunk’ attitude but mainly just ignore it. I really don’t understand why people have to be drunk to have fun

HappyDinosaur · 16/10/2020 16:51

Me, it's mainly the smell that puts me off.

HedgehogPJs · 16/10/2020 16:53

@IncandescentSilver sounds to me like you are a supertaster. Are you slim?

sunflowerspeoniesanddaisies · 16/10/2020 16:57

I was an absolute party animal i my late teens and twenties but I rarely drink now. As I've got older I've realised I actually only like the taste of a good quality NZ Sauvignon Blanc, a Chablis or a Sancerre. Other than that I don't like the taste and if either of those aren't available then I won't bother to drink. I still only have a glass or two anyway. That makes it sounds like I know a little about wine, I don't I just know that I like those ones Grin

Even then I have people saying 'oh, have the red instead! You don't like red wine? Oh but you must it's lovely, try the merlot! Or have a gin!' Urgh no thanks not for me.

IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 16:58

I am slim "Hedgehog" but I do eat most stuff, including some things many others wouldn't. I'll happily eat all kinds of stinky strong cheese. Except fruit. It tastes vile to me, especially bananas. Several members of my family actually get stomach problems if they eat bananas. I've just never eaten one!

18 year old DS, surprisingly. Just not interested.

GunsAndShips · 16/10/2020 18:53

I don't know about super taster (not heard of it) but I am extremely sensitive to flavour too op. Beer smells and tastes (though I've only sipped it) like a yeasty, hoppy, fermented punch to the throat/nose. Wine is strange, sharp, acidic, cloying, nose-burning oddness. I was convinced to try a weird orangey peach thing once and I swear to God, it burned. I have a v good sense of smell too.

I am extremely sensitive to caffeine. If I drink even one coffee, I have palpitations, can't sleep, headache. Same with painkillers though. I tried anadin extra once when I had a migraine and passed out for hours. I need only half a paracetamol to get rid of a headache.

I eat a very varied diet though and love big flavours and spice and heat in food.

Rainbowllama4 · 16/10/2020 19:02

I don’t drink alcohol at all and never have, not even in my late teens or twenties, I don’t like the smell of any of it, it’s nauseating. I spent 5 years with an alcoholic, I couldn’t understand his need to drink, he was a total twat when drunk which was most of the time. I find the whole Prosecco and gin thing twee.

Snackasaurus · 16/10/2020 19:04

I don't hate alcohol but I very rarely drink and could quite happily live without drinking it again. The thought of 'nights out' that involves copious amounts of alcohol isn't my idea of fun either.

Give me a night in, wearing my PJS, a good book and a nice cuppa anyday! Grin

Fishfingersandwichplease · 16/10/2020 19:12

I can take it or leave it.

rosiejaune · 16/10/2020 19:21

I don't like it, and it makes the back of my neck/shoulders ache.

Clappingforjoy · 16/10/2020 19:23

Wow somebody else on my level I dont get it either

Musereader · 16/10/2020 19:31

Yep, me too every alcohol drink tastes like some one poured nail varnish remover in it.

I think it is to do with super tasters, cannot drink tea or coffee either.

LG101 · 16/10/2020 19:52

Me, pass the cake and chocolate any day! I don’t get any pleasure from alcohol

IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 20:23

Yes to both the nail varnisher remover taste and the aching shoulders! I have an Asian grandmother.
