Who Else Cannot Stand Alcohol and Never Drinks It?

IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 14:27

I really hate the taste and never have any urge to drink anything containing alcohol (friends always try to tell me its just because you've not tried gin/Baileys/a certain cocktail/some wine/whatever). I never have the urge to drink it as it tastes unpleasant to me, and remains unpleasant tasting even if I do get drunk. I get very flushed in the face on the very rare occasions I force myself to drink to be sociable and either feel sleepy or become warlike and want to fight like a God, in every case I wake up the next morning feeling normal and have never experienced a hangover effect. But I just don't want to drink.

It seems that the whole world is about looking forward to a drink, prosecco, wine, whatever. I just can't stand the attraction. Is there anyone else out there who feels the same? (I have no problem with people who do enjoy drinking and I enjoy going out and partying, I just stay sober)

I don't drink because I drive everty day and even if I'm on holiday and not driving I don't even think about having a drink.

I don't hate alcohol. I'm not TeaTotal because I do use alcohol (Amarretto) in Christmas cake and the marzipan.

Over 12 years ago I bought a small (30cl) bottle of Baileys for Christmas and took the remains away for Easter (not driving ) but even then I couldn't finish it and though I might as well give up Grin

It's just not on my radar I think

phoenixrosehere · 16/10/2020 15:36

I’ve never been fond of the taste of alcohol and anything I did drink couldn’t taste like it.

I hated the taste of beer and still remember people buying them for me anyway and then get annoyed when I didn’t drink them. I never understood why so many people have a bee in their bonnet about people not choosing/or wanting to have alcohol. It’s not limiting them from having any so why do they care?

devildeepbluesea · 16/10/2020 15:37

Oh god not another one of these threads.

GunsAndShips · 16/10/2020 15:38

@Frazzled13 the common ingredient is alcohol! If you don't like coriander it doesn't matter if it's served with fish or chicken, the taste of coriander is the unpleasant part.

Wine tastes like alcohol with vinegary fruit. Cider tastes like alcohol with apple. Even food with alcohol. I like gravy, you put wine in it and it tastes of gravy and alcohol. Same as some puddings.

I wonder if it is genetic? Maybe I'm more sensitive to it but alcohol all tastes of alcohol.

So why didn’t you keep scrolling..

GunsAndShips · 16/10/2020 15:42

Did somebody force you to click on it @devildeepbluesea? Are you being held against your will? Do you need help?

Oh god not another one of these threads
Yeah , and funnily enough I didn't get my medal from SimplyPizza last time either
Ain't life a bitch eh? Hmm

CarolVordermansBum · 16/10/2020 15:42

I'm with you. I had a glass of wine with Christmas lunch in 2015 and I can't even remember the time before that. I couldn't be in a relationship with someone who drank either.

Slave2love · 16/10/2020 15:46

Me. Hate the taste and feel no urge to ever drink any ever again.

PracticingPerson · 16/10/2020 15:46

I rarely drink but do like the taste, I have worked in the wine industry so know the good from the bad. I also really like drinks like sloe gin and good sherry.

But I just don't drink much now. I cba with feeling bad the next day and I used to drink due to the alcohol rather than the flavour and I don't like that. I stopped altogether for many years.

So now I drink maybe once every couple of months, just a little bit of something really really nice.

I agree you don't need alcohol to have fun.

devildeepbluesea · 16/10/2020 15:47

@GunsAndShips

Did somebody force you to click on it *@devildeepbluesea*? Are you being held against your will? Do you need help?
😂😂😂 I was wondering how long it would take someone to come up with this!
empireants · 16/10/2020 15:49

I feel the same and it's nice to know that others do. I don't like the taste and don't really like being drunk, I'd rather have a cup of tea!

iglpgl · 16/10/2020 15:51

@CarterBeatsTheDevil

I like a drink occasionally, but months can go past without me thinking of having any.

Cake, on the other hand, cannot live here because I want to eat all of it all the time.

I'm exactly the same!
HowFastIsTooFast · 16/10/2020 15:55

Sounds like the OP touched a nerve with a couple of PPs there, very aggressive responses to an innocuous question! Hmm

goldrabbit22 · 16/10/2020 15:56

I've stopped having wine. I do enjoy the taste but I hate how it makes me feel. Even a small glass is just too much.

Phrowzunn · 16/10/2020 15:57

I feel the same as @GunsAndShips re the taste. It’s so strong and bitter and horrible that it ruins any drink or food even if the other ingredients or flavours are nice. I’ve read before about ‘super-tasters’ and wonder if that’s to do with it? I don’t like coffee or rocket or grapefruit or dark chocolate or anything with a bitter taste, as in, can’t stand it. Some people might just be more sensitive to the taste and not be able to get past it. Even the smell to be honest Envy

HowFastIsTooFast · 16/10/2020 15:59

Posted too quick. I do drink (although not at the moment for Sober October) but don't understand the constant nagging and questioning when people don't.

My boss doesn't drink at all (dates back to emetophobia in her teens and now it's just not her habit) and she's constantly asked about it. Constantly. It must be so bloody tiresome.

To be honest half the reason I've done sober October is because we're TTC and it would give me a good reason to say 'oh I felt so much healthier after that month that I've decided to carry it on' than to face the suspicion and questions I know would come with just suddenly declining a wine.

Holyrivolli · 16/10/2020 16:02

I’ve stopped drinking for the past few months and don’t really miss it. I never liked the taste - only the effect of being pissed. My mum has one gin and tonic every night. That seems crazy to me and I can’t see the point. Everyone’s palate is different and some people seem to really enjoy the taste. Each to their own.

thepeopleversuswork · 16/10/2020 16:05

I do drink and used to drink quite a lot but I can increasingly relate to this.

I increasingly find it just isn't worth the grief: the following day is always a complete wipeout and it makes me feel miserable.

I honestly think people who don't like alcohol are lucky.

Chloemol · 16/10/2020 16:10

I don’t drink alcohol. Like you I have nothing with it in, I hate the taste

Lots do t understand but it’s their problem

At least I remember what’s gone on!

Carpathian2 · 16/10/2020 16:20

I don't drink, it never enters my head to buy an alcoholic drink. I don't like the taste or the feeling of being drunk.
Having a father and xh who are alcoholics has put me off for life.

AlternativePerspective · 16/10/2020 16:22

The fact that people seem to feel the need to criticise people for stating they don’t like alcohol says everything about the drinking culture in the UK. Where you’re considered abnormal if you don’t drink, where people look forward to wine o’clock and happy hour, and consequently the need to belittle those who don’t conform.

personally I don’t like the taste of any of it either. I used to e.g. drink archers and lemonade, white wine with lemonade, but tbh I figured that if you need to mask alcohol with something to make it not taste of alcohol then there’s little point really.

As a teenager I didn’t drink, and I lost count of the number of people who used to say things like “I’d love to get you drunk to see what you’re like when you’ve been drinking,” and “I’d like to spike your drinks one day ha ha ha ha.” I’m now on blood thinners and drinking is very much not recommended, so I can now just say that I can’t drink. But there is a chart online where you can work out how much you can drink to be safe with the dosage of warferin you’re taking. If anyone actually needs to work out how much they can drink I’d say they probably have issues with alcohol.

user1471538283 · 16/10/2020 16:25

I do drink but rarely and sometimes just the thought of it turns my stomach. I used to love going out for drinks but even then I couldn't drink very much. This country has such a drinking culture it is seen as odd if you don't drink.

LindainLockdown · 16/10/2020 16:26

I wish I wasn't a drinker (moderate) but can't stand smug non-drinkers. Not saying you are one, but there are some around, although they are in the minority, UK definitely has a historical drinking culture.

IncandescentSilver · 16/10/2020 16:29

I keep waiting for my adult tastes to develop I to something more sophisticated (I can't stand the taste of tea or coffee either and drink water or diluting juice). Still waiting!

To elaborate how bad alcohol tastes to me. Wine tastes like dried blood, vodka like metal, beer smells kind of like yeasty tea thars gone off (haven't ever managed to drink it), many other alcoholic drinks taste like sweaty socks. Tea tastes like poison, I don't know how else to describe it, and I actually get an allergic reaction from just being in the same room as someone who is drinking camomile tea - a pounding headache, sniffy nose and feeling of confusion!

Does anyone else have these symptoms? I realise how odd it is.
