AIBU to think if I haven't heard by now they've given it to their first choice and are waiting for confirmation before rejecting the rest?!

It's for an academic post which are genuinely like gold dust right now! The panel were interviewing 5 people over mon and tues.

Am in SUCH a grumpy mood and would just quite like them to put me out my misery please Grin

Solidarity to anyone in the terrible terrible job market of academic right now

Waiting to hear back is the worst... you have my sympathies.
I always try to assume I haven’t got it, and then it’s a pleasant surprise if I have.

PumpkinetChocolat · 16/10/2020 11:22

I have no knowledge and experience of academic environment.

In my line of work, it would mean absolutely nothing, so fingers crossed for you. I agree with always assuming you haven't got a role so you keep active and keep looking!

FlorenceNightshade · 16/10/2020 11:22

Did they tell you when they’d let you know? If not I’d get in touch with them so you’re not left hanging all weekend

Foliageeverywhere122 · 16/10/2020 11:30

@FlorenceNightshade

ah so they said I would hear by the end of this week or early next week, so probably shouldn't get in contact already!

But I do wonder what would take them so long unless it's making sure they can hire their first choice (I don't think they'd spend 5 days weighing up which person they wanted iyswim)

@PumpkinetChocolat

that's interesting to know! What takes so long inbetween interviewing and letting the person know?

It's dreadful the way candidates are being treated at the moment. I get it that jobs are few and candidates are many, but that's no excuse for ghosting people who have come for interview.

I was made redundant in June and the way I have been treated by far too many companies and recruiters is appalling.

Definitely get in touch - then you can hand in heart know you did everything you could.

As hard as it is, if companies are prepared to treat you in this rude way, would you want to work for them anyway?

FlorenceNightshade · 16/10/2020 11:35

You never know! It could be to give the panel time to decide, there could be annual leave for some of the panel, limited availability etc literally a thousand reasons why it could take a few days.

I’d take this time for a wee digital detox, no driving yourself mad checking emails, and through yourself into a project like some diy or something

murasaki · 16/10/2020 12:10

THey may be negotiating salaries with candidate one, or HR are slow with the paperwork, a number of things, I work in University recruitment and it can take an annoying amount of time Don't give up yet.

NotOfThisWorld · 16/10/2020 12:15

I have to say in academic posts it does usually work in the way you assumed - they immediately tell the successful candidate and once it's absolutely firmly agreed then let everyone know. The exception was if there was a candidate that you felt wouldn't be appropriate at all and they're rejected straight away. That said even if that's true not everyone will accept the post so there's still hope!

babygroups · 16/10/2020 12:17

Is it possible they were still interviewing late into the week?

ChrisChambersNeverMisses · 16/10/2020 12:17

I'm in a similar position, they said I'd hear by today but I'd imagine it's a no if I haven't heard by now Sad

Disappointedkoala · 16/10/2020 12:37

University manager here - wherever I've worked there's a hierarchy of sign off before an appointment can be made and it can takes ages, especially with people working from home. It might be that it's waiting for sign off or they've offered it to someone and they are considering it overnight. Fingers crossed you hear soon.

Sparklesocks · 16/10/2020 12:51

Maybe. But it also might be that a member of the panel hasn’t fed back yet, or they’re getting the salary signed off, or there’s an admin issue.

DorisDances · 16/10/2020 14:47

When I got my academic post I was told the same day

Foliageeverywhere122 · 16/10/2020 15:20

Thanks for the opinions and insights!

Still nada in my inbox..

It would be lovely if they were waiting on HR to do something before they could email, but prob just wishful thinking!

It’s still early this week until end of business Wednesday in my book. Don’t give up hope

ConorMasonsWife · 21/10/2020 14:42

Hope you hear op, I would probably get in touch today but I'm impatient so others may wait longer.

SnakesOrLadders · 21/10/2020 14:44

Think if you not heard by lunchtime tomorrow you could get in touch then I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you op

DelilahfromDevon · 21/10/2020 14:46
