Dress up to go to a grocery store

Do you dress up to go to the grocery store or dress comfortably?

My sister went to Trader Joe today and she felt everyone seem so boring because no one dressed nice for themselves. all in comfortable clothes like sweatpants . I think people just want to get in and out from the store so it is the least of their concerns.

No, I wouldn’t dress up to go food shopping.

PolkadotGiraffe · 16/10/2020 01:13

Hahaa dress up as what? Raid the children's dress up box and be a fairy princess or a firefighter?

Or do you mean make an effort with how you look, for a shopping trip, wearing evenings clothes and makeup etc? 😆 I would find it highly amusing to see that.

More effort like you do when you go see friends or maybe work? I didn’t know how else to call it.

I live just down the road from a supermarket - no way am I getting dressed up to go there! Sometimes I go straight from gardening.

HilaryBriss · 16/10/2020 01:26

If I was going shopping all day with a friend, having lunch in the middle, maybe I would make an effort. To go to Tesco for the weekly shop? No chance.

seayork2020 · 16/10/2020 01:34

No but then I don't dress up - I just wear clothes

PolkadotGiraffe · 16/10/2020 01:40

@blueberrypie0112 that's nuts. Why would somebody do that? 😂

I'd struggle not to laugh. But maybe the person is very insecure or something? Or unwell? It is very strange behaviour so there must be something else going on. 😕

BritWifeinUSA · 16/10/2020 01:42

Trader Joe’s...say no more. Of course the customers don’t dress up.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 16/10/2020 01:52

What is a Trader Joe's?

PolkadotGiraffe · 16/10/2020 01:56

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire

What is a Trader Joe's?
I wondered this and googled. Apparently some type of grocery shop?
EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 16/10/2020 01:59

Googled as well. So it's a discount grocery shop similar to Aldi?

Are you familiar with Aldi? It is similar to it. Actually I think one brother runs Aldi and the other run trader joe’s

Not somewhere for evening wear for sureor needing to wear a suit etc for sure.Confused

Why do you ask OP?

PolkadotGiraffe · 16/10/2020 02:03

Or maybe they came in there for something after being at a wedding or in a business meeting, to get some milk or whatever?

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 16/10/2020 02:05

To answer the OP, I wear whatever I want to go food shopping.

grassisjeweled · 16/10/2020 02:05

Yes, I'll put smart jeans on and a shirt. Hate looking scruffy

AlyMcNabs · 16/10/2020 02:07

Why would anybody get their best togs on to do grocery shopping?

Around here if you go past 7pm lots of people are doing their weekly shop in their pj’s! 🙄 I’ll never understand why. Similarly I don’t understand why someone would “dress up” to go to the supermarket either 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dress up in Webster dictionary -> 3 : to present in the most attractive or impressive light

Because I don’t bother with looking nice when I go to stores like this.

I work long hour shifts at work, so on my days off I just chill, if I go out to the supermarket I don't care how I dress. I don't really notice people shopping though and have no problems with people who do dress up nice all the time, none of my business. I notice people 12.5 hours a day 3 or 4 days a week at work I need a break from it lol

blueberrypie0112 · 16/10/2020 02:12

And no I don’t mean formal clothes. Still can’t find the right word

During the height of lockdown, when my only outing were shopping and walking/running/cycling, I did start wearing ball gowns to the supermarket and to walk in the park, just to put on some actual clothes and pretend I had somewhere else to go.

The rest of the time, I don’t exactly dress up but I wouldn’t slob to Sainsbury’s (or anywhere else) in my pyjamas or scruffy clothes, I’d feel grungy.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 16/10/2020 02:22

I think there is some confusion OP.

This is a UK website so obviously we all wear a nice cocktail dress to buy potatoes.

To us, dress up means a new hat and full length gown which is reserved for more formal occasions such as jogging.

We have very few captial crimes remaining but wearing 'sweatpants' is one.

That’s how my sister feels too. That’s why I asked, although I wear comfortable clothes , it’s plain and simple. She likes to dress nice and she thought it was depressing to see people in sweatpants and probably PJs.

Trader Joe's is like a less expensive version of Whole Foods. It's mostly natural, organic, etc.

I don't dress up to go to the grocery, but I do try to look presentable. I don't generally wear sweatpants, pajamas, etc., outside the house, no matter where I'm going.
