If you are slim, what, in your opinion, keeps you that way?

I read the other thread with interest and as an obese person a lot of the comments range true but it made me wonder. Those of you who are in the ideal/normal weight category, what do you attribute that to?

HIIT train x 6 days a week as a standard.
Set calorie intake.
Calorie deficit if I need to drop a few kg's from over indulging.
Genetics.
Size 8-10

MyTelescopeBroke · 16/10/2020 06:12

I don't eat much fruit; a lot of veg; I avoid sugar. I eat full fat versions of everything and never eat diet food or food marketed as healthy' because that generally means the fat has been removed and replaced with sugar/carbs and other nasties. I only drink alcohol once a week if that.

I generally cook from scratch. Work has been intense recently and I'm shattered so I've been eating less well and it shows!

I'm not naturally slim and could easily put on weight if I wasnt mindful.

Coconut2010 · 16/10/2020 06:23

Good genes (very slim mother) but I would probably weigh 2 extra stones (which would still be well within the normal BMI range) if I didn’t have willpower, which includes eating healthy/low calorie food and trying to limit my portions (which is hard because I have a pretty large appetite!).
I am also naturally active (hyperactive!) and sporty.

@Sarahandduck18

*Joy doesn’t only come from food lol! I find joy in being with my family, having hobbies, spending time with my lovely friends, writing, running my business, jogging, dancing, feeling healthy and fit- that’s plenty of joy to go around! People find joy in different things dont they?*

As a fat person I’ll answer this to say no, food and drinks are my only joy in life.

@Sarahandduck18

I recall you from other threads

Surely your children bring you joy?

I’m also as curious as the OP, but the other way around: if you are fat, what do you eat all day? But if I made a thread like that, well, can you imagine...

@popcornlover , two slices of white toast with butter ( would normally have 4 slices but needed to go out ) , packet of quavers, sweet and sour battered chicken with egg fried rice, two large glasses of wine and 10 cups of coffee with semi skimmed milk. No exercise to speak of, probably do a max of a 1,000 steps a day.

Very obese and need to do something about it. Blush

But would go down like a sack of lead balloons

What’s your digestion like out of curiosity? Ie constipated? What’s your mood like?

It’s not actually a lot of food. Essentially a packet of crisps for lunch?

kittykat35 · 16/10/2020 06:58

I can't say I do anything to be honest so it must be genetics and luck. Although I do have an under active thyroid and I can eat like crap some days, I can snack in the evenings, I don't do much exercise besides a walk once/twice a week (and not a power walk!)
I'm 5.3 and about 9ish stone (which is the most I have ever been. But I'm a size 8/10

White toast and butter is the devil's work!

My exh is obese. When we lived together, I would cook proper healthy food but he always finished the day with 4 rounds of white toast and butter or a white bread and butter and roast chicken crisps sandwich.

I haven't bought bread in years because the temptation is just too great!!

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 16/10/2020 07:10

Mainly genes. Also I am a primary teacher so fairly active on my feet all day. I tend to eat small portions and don't have time to eat much lunch usually. I did put on a bit of weight over lockdown when I was home more and there was constant access to food!

frumpety · 16/10/2020 07:11

@Sodamncold , the toast was at lunchtime , I only eat two meals a day , so when I am working I wouldn't have toast just a pack up or shop meal deal plus biscuits . If I am not working I normally wouldn't eat until lunchtime, but I do drink gallons of coffee with milk, I would also have a bit more wine if not working.
Never constipated. Mood wise depends on the amount of wine, but generally speaking fairly positive and upbeat, physically I feel like I have about 25% of the energy I should have if that makes sense ? Doesn't help that I am lugging around approx 60kg of excess cells !

AnotherFriday · 16/10/2020 07:16

MarjorytheTrashHeap

Same here! I tend to only eat on meal a day - there's just no time for anything else.

Didn't go down like a lead balloon

@AnotherFriday crisp sandwhiches are the food of the Gods !

I do actually like healthy food , love every type of vegetable with the exception of fennel. Love lentils and legumes. Have a bit of an olive habit too !

Lifeis10percent · 16/10/2020 07:27

Eating when hungry
Not set meal times.
Not eating things because 'thats what you do' but eating things because they're good for me and I like them (prime examples breakfast cereal and bread. Both only something I'd get in for others, not required for me).
Motivated to look after my body-I appreciate that this is a personal thing and others have different priorities.

SnugglySnerd · 16/10/2020 07:27

Luck. I eat anything I like and I eat big portions, never refuse pudding or cake, carbs with every meal. However, I always eat a lot of fruit and veg, probably 7-8 portions a day. I always have snacks like a banana or apple and nuts which stops me getting too hungry and I rarely buy crisps, chocolate, sweets or biscuits. I cook all meals from scratch and have a take away about once a term. Never buy ready meals. I don't usually drink a lot of alcohol (not for any health reason, just can't stand being hungover with 3 small dcs) and I am quite active. I don't officially exercise by going to the gym or anything but I do walk to most places - school run, shops etc and I have a job where I'm on my feet all day.
It was noticeable that I did gain weight during lock down but it had gone within a couple of weeks of being back at work and doing the school run again

You should do it, I for one think it would be extremely interesting.
Straven123 · 16/10/2020 07:36

If I eat a meal of carbs I feel blergh! afterwards. Not nauseous but bloated and a bit lethargic - a bit like after Xmas dinner when all you want to do is loll around.
My problem is crunchy stuff - I love biscuits and crisps. 'Fortunately' as I got older I suffered acid reflux if I ate too much fatty food. I chose not to take medication but just avoid the nibbles now.
I am a bit overweight but bmi is ok for height and age. But I would like to be lighter. As I've got older I'm sure my breasts are bigger and heavier and saggier. Could do to lost some of that.

Dramaofallama · 16/10/2020 07:37

Genetics is the main factor for me, plus only eating when I am hungry and stopping when full.
I also have an active job, so on my feet most of the day and do not drive so walking and public transport.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 16/10/2020 07:40

I think it's down partly to genetics. Even when I wasn't exercising and eating rubbish, I still levelled out at just over 9 stone.

Now I'm the weight I prefer to be (7st 10) it's down to counting calories and exercise

Whoopsies · 16/10/2020 07:44

Being ok with being hungry. I'm always really hungry by the time my next meal rolls round, I used to always eat at the first sign of hunger but now I wait! I don't snack, just eat 3 meals a day and then I find I can eat what I want (and it helps that I usually want healthy foods) I had cancer 10 years ago and have felt the importance of being healthy ever since!

Sodamncold · 16/10/2020 07:45

Op
That thread you posted covers reasons why overweight people think they are overweight

Whereas pp and I were interested in what overweight people eat.

You’d think the two was very closely related!

SheeshazAZ09 · 16/10/2020 07:49

No sugar and like PP said, eating when hungry and stopping when I’ve had enough, and not eating after 6:30pm.
