I read the other thread with interest and as an obese person a lot of the comments range true but it made me wonder. Those of you who are in the ideal/normal weight category, what do you attribute that to?

Thank you. What a horrible post of that pp

Cooking from fresh pretty much all the time. Eating three proper meals at reasonable times with a good amount of protein and fibre so no desire to snack in between. Not buying 'bad' snacks like chocolate and crisps just so they're not in the house to choose - instead lots of fruit, yogurt, nuts etc..

alittleprivacy · 17/10/2020 15:12

Gosh I feel kind of bad now. I certainly didn't feel it was sneery.

enjoyingscience · 17/10/2020 15:13

@Sodamncold I didn’t read it as sneery at all! It is properly lovely that you’ve found a hobby you love. I think it’s something lots of people aspire to! I read the comment as just that, someone finding it really nice that you’re clearly so happy in your hobby.

Sodamncold · 17/10/2020 18:13

It wasn’t in the slightest A nasty ouster trying to sow seeds

I think your hobby sounds brilliant. And so much fun and also amazing exercise

Sodamncold · 17/10/2020 18:15

“A nasty poster”

Clearly nobody else thought your comment was sneery. I'm glad you asked the question. Skating sounds amazing @alittleprivacy but I have a dreadful sense of balance, plus we have a rink that's makeshift over the Christmas period only. Good for you for getting so fit - I used to think that would be me "one day" but at 51 it doesn't seem that likely ....

UnicornAndSparkles · 17/10/2020 18:57

For me, age. When I was in my 20s I could easily eat and drink whatever j wanted, rarely exercised but for walking and was a size 8-10 and slim.

Mid 30s now, with 1 DC and another on the way and I'm in the overweight category.

Vicliz24 · 17/10/2020 19:16

I run four times a week and naturally lean towards veggies and simple food . I walk everywhere too . I never seem to do less than 15000 steps a day ever . I also never finish a meal completely.

Siameasy · 17/10/2020 19:23

I don’t eat that much. I’m mindful of what I eat. I do intermittent fasting and generally eat low carb. These things mean you’re just not that hungry. Added to that I use heavy weights at the gym. This is a game changer for women.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 18/10/2020 09:22

To paraphrase Kate Moss "Nothing tastes as good as a healthy weight feels". I also believe that "the second helping doesn't taste any different (or better) than the first helping

Yes, this is 100% true. I notice a bit of snark creeping in with weight threads in the same way it creeps in with alcohol threads. Eg, every time moderation or controlling intake gets mentioned you instantly get "urgh sounds SO boring" or ""I like to have fun" or "I couldn't live a life of deprivation" etc.

Such Bollocks. Eating disorders aside (which have deep emotional roots that usually require therapy), moderation and self control is a NORMAL part of life and being a functioning adult. We all have to moderate our behaviour and control ourselves. There have been many times when I almost had a panic attack at the thought of going out yet again in a face mask but I still did it- thats self control. There have been many times when I could easily have punched someone in the face for making unkind, hurtful comments but I didnt and so on. Our whole lives consist of us moderating our primal impulses and operating self control in multiple ways. Noone says "urgh- I couldn't not punch someone in the face- I like to have fun!". Thats not to say its "easy" by any means because it isnt and we dont always get it right. But please dont act like anyone who operates self control or restraint around food is some kind of boring, killjoy who is incapable of having any fun because some of us really dont enjoy the physical or emotional feelings that come with being overweight. It doesnt make us boring and sad and as long as we arent commenting on anyone else's weight or judging anyone else then it really comes across as sour grapes and jealous to make such comments. If you decide not to self moderate around food then thats your right and your choice, we are all different but stop making value judgments about people's life enjoyment purely based on how many fcking jaffa cakes they eat on a daily basis!

HarrietOh · 18/10/2020 09:51

Always been very slim most of my life. These days it’s exercise. I love food and eat everything, both healthy home cooked meals and chocolate, so I do a lot of exercise to make up for that!

WashedandDried · 18/10/2020 09:54

Genetics, daily walking, active job, eat when I'm hungry/stop when I'm full.

Tittie · 18/10/2020 15:01

I don't eat as much as I'd like, but do have the occasional treat so I don't feel the need to binge. No special diet, no funny rules, just everything in moderation. If I eat a lot on one day, I cut back a bit the next.

Since I co sleep I can't drink at the moment, which probably helps.

I was a big teenager, and discovering calories changed my life - I always have a very loose running total going on in my head now and kind of know when to stop. I did take it too far in my late teens (anorexia) and have come to a happy medium now.

Its 80% diet and 20% exercise too. My exercise is just the school run though, but it does add up to an hour and a half of walking a day which has got to be better than nothing?

TheoneandObi · 18/10/2020 16:34

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter and what is more, those who snidely say oh moderation is so boring may have their own eating demons they're not acknowledging. It frankly isn't 'normal' to eat and eat and eat. I know this because I've done it!

TiredConfusedMumma · 19/10/2020 00:42

Portion control. I started my ‘lifestyle change’ in March of this year and am currently down 30+ kgs and almost at my goal weight of 56kgs.
I still eat things I like, just very small portions. If I took everything out of my diet that I liked or craved, it wouldn’t be sustainable.... this way has worked & the weight is still coming off.

I once did the ‘I quit sugar’ diet which did shift 12kgs in about 4 months but I couldn’t stick to it, seeing food that I so badly wanted & not being able to eat it made me miserable lol

So that’s it, portion sizes.
Down from 91.6kgs to 59.2kgs 😊

Trut · 19/10/2020 12:53

Amazing @TiredConfusedMumma! Well done 👍🏼

Cakeandcustard123 · 19/10/2020 12:57

I gain weight then diet it off then gain weight and diet it off. If i didn't keep to the dieting it off part then I'd quickly become very overweight. I envy people who can eat everything in moderation but I'm either on a diet or I'm not. So I've just accepted that's my mindset and make a conscious effort to keep an eye on my weight and diet it off once I've gone up by 7lbs.

ConeTogether · 19/10/2020 15:18

Bulimia. I throw up about ten times a day.

ConeTogether · 19/10/2020 15:18

Don't recommend.

Been on the waiting list for counselling since April...

wonderstuff · 19/10/2020 17:53

Shit that's awful. I'm angry for you. Wish I could offer advice. Stay safe.

MiddlesexGirl · 19/10/2020 17:57

To lose weight- lots of exercise, limited carbs, 16:8 mostly, counting calories and watching the scales.
However, I'm only just down to ideal weight - trying to work out how to maintain that and neither lose more nor gain from now on.

MiddlesexGirl · 19/10/2020 18:04

Good for you for getting so fit - I used to think that would be me "one day" but at 51 it doesn't seem that likely ....

Why? Medical reasons aside there's no reason you can't get super fit and toned in your 50s and beyond.
