Anyone else do weird stuff they wouldn't admit to in real life?

Go easy on me, I know MN can be a hostile time at the minute,,,,
I am currently obsessed with The Handmaids Tale, cant stop watching the series on Prime, and I was lying in the bath having a soak and I started to mimic the lead characters facial movements, and then I though since I have been watching it, I pretend I'm in it, pretending that I am also an oppressed woman and answer to men only etc, is this weird?

I do this with other things like books or other series, it doesn't affect my life, in a crazy way but more like a day dream sort of way and when the kids ask for a snack, i snap out of it. Am I the only weirdo around here, or do have weird things you do that you would never admit to in real life or do I need some professional help :)

I have also tied loads of string round my living room a few times and retended they are alarm wires like in that Catherine Zeta Jones/Pierce Brosnan

Dizzib1 · 15/10/2020 18:32

@Iknowforsure

I look for beautiful, expensive houses on rightmove and then plan my whole life out around them. Research the schools my children would go to, etc. Blush
Haha i do that quite often, I even got annoyed that someone actually bought 'my' dream home!
Jammysod · 15/10/2020 18:47

I have conversations with people I know in my head. I actually do the facial expressions whilst doing it though, so look a bit mental.

WINDOLENE · 15/10/2020 18:52

I find myself in my garden with a menagerie of small animals, chickens, rabbits etc... OK I live in the house in the Darling Buds of May or Philashayes in Down to Earth... Not a pokey flat in a tower block

Lorddenning1 · 15/10/2020 18:54

@Fluffybutter that's proper made me laugh, I like to recreate the scene from what lies beneath, where she is lied in the bath and can't move and she has to wait for the water to go down the drain Grin

Yes to this thread! I am currently running 2 separate scenarios in my head which are in-line with things I am currently watching.

  1. Law & Order: SVU. I am a specialist cop coming it to bring down a massive trafficking ring, and doing a damn good job
  2. What it would be like if I was a ghost in the BBC show Ghosts and what my characters back story would be

In addition:

  • I create escape plans like PPs have mentioned
-i frequently dream of inheritance from a distant relative who leaves me a mansion (a guess there's a link to Ghosts there). In addition, I of course use right move to find my inheritance house.

So I am weird too! I love my day dreaming. It's super relaxing to unwind in your imagination.

Lorddenning1 · 15/10/2020 19:01

@FazeleysRoyale I got an email today from my boss asking to do something and my immediate reaction was to think, typical man bossing women about, we are so oppressed, I will do it when I want to.
Need to step back a bit haha I have bills to pay, I am in no way oppressed by men Confused

I talk to myself any time I'm alone (I'm not alone much anymore). If something has angered or confused me I talk it all through as if I'm explaining it to someone. It really helps me sort out how I feel because if I just keep thoughts in my head I can't separate them. It's therapeutic, a bit like keeping a diary. DH has caught me a couple of times and thinks no-one else does this.

ProperVexed · 15/10/2020 19:03

@Disfordarkchocolate I hope your day can get better. 💐

nixso29 · 15/10/2020 19:13

If I see a dog out while I'm driving I'll shout "hello doggo" really loud and pretend they have said hello back to me

The80sweregreat · 15/10/2020 19:14

I go through conversations I've had in my head to make sure I didn't upset anyone!
Especially if I've been out for a long time with people ( lunch or something) and then replay it all. (I didn't ever do this when I was younger !)
I think I'm scared of upsetting anyone or doing the wrong thing or looking an idiot.
It's hard to explain at times! I'm sure I've become more paranoid as I've aged.

When I listen to music I always pretend I’m the singer and lead guitarist. I usually have a playlist of a particular band on my iPhone so I listen to that and imagine it’s me. Sometimes I’m in The Kills. At the moment I’m PJ Harvey and because of lockdown I’m having to do my gigs from home and stream live for fans.

Sometimes I’m in the band at the end of the Graham Norton show and Henry Cavill is often on the sofa too and after the performance I have my interview on the sofa where I am witty and charming and Henry falls in love with me. It could happen!

DeriArms · 15/10/2020 19:23

Love this thread. I have full blown conversations with people I know about all sorts of different stuff when I’m on my own, imagining they were there. Plus when I’m running I imagine I’m in the Olympics or the London Marathon with lots of spectators and supportive commentary. It’s reassuring to hear others do similar, even though I know already that they do! I guess as humans we have a need for imaginative ‘play’ and that’s just fine. If our weirdness is not hurting anyone then who gives a fuck!

Vello · 15/10/2020 19:23

@MrsJackRackham

I have conversations with time travellers from the past, often Anne Boleyn, where I explain how the modern world works. We go to the pub and the cinema etc. She right likes me.
I also do this. Daydream buddy!
TheDaydreamBelievers · 15/10/2020 19:25

@Goldenhedgehogs The Unthinkable is a brilliant book

@DeriArms -absolutely, even adults need play. And as others have talked about, it can also be a processing tool for thoughts or emotions

Pinkpepper9 · 15/10/2020 19:46

When I go for walks I pretend every step I take banks £1. When I get to the top of my road On the way back I stop counting and imagine how I would spend the money in my imaginary bank 😅 great way to pass time and get steps in when I forget my headphones.

I'm like this with any animal. I managed to embarrass DH when I yelled "Cows!" loudly when we went past a field while on a train in the first class carriage. I forgot we weren't in the car. BlushGrin
SomewhereEast · 15/10/2020 19:49

I make up stories at night when dropping off to sleep. Its something I've done since childhood. I sort of work through any given story at the rate of a 'chapter' at night. Some of them run for years Grin. Other than that my weirdesr thing is that I absolutely love shipping fictional characters, to the point of reading fanfic about my faves. DH has learnt to live with my soap opera-esque running commentaries on who should be with who in any given piece of fiction (I had STRONG opinions about the Hunger Games love triangle for example, and Hermione should NOT be with Ron).

Maireas · 15/10/2020 19:53

I talk to my mum most evenings. She died 39 years ago.

Lorddenning1 · 15/10/2020 19:54

@Maireas that's quite sweet Daffodil

I confessed mine to my OH and then prompted him for his weirdness, the best he could come up with, when he is in the yard at work he has a secret race with his work mates who can get to somewhere the quickest, he does the sports commentary in his head, he is always the underdog and when he loses he makes stuff up like it wasn't his year, I'm pretty impressed to be honest Grin

I chat to my my dead parents too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does all these things and I also agree that Ron and Hermoine was wrong on every single level.
I think even J K knows this.
Maybe people that read have more active imaginations? :)

KooKooKachu · 15/10/2020 19:58

One thing not mentioned, if I hear a word I like I write it in loopy writing with my finger, on the arm of the chair, or on my leg out of sight!

Ah this made me drool. I've always loved doing this. I used to love when they brought the telly out at primary school and we got to watch The Magic Pencil. I have a strong love of writing because of it. I am always writing words with my finger on things in the fanciest writing I can think of.

I also have many imaginary convos with people who aren't there and I am of course, fucking hilarious and charming AF.

An odd little like of mine is feeling certain types of plastics between my fingers. It's like a sensory thing. I love the feel of 'gummy' plastics.

I also love the smell of sticky labels when you peel them off the backing. Oh and magazines. When I worked in retail I looked like a freak sniffing all the new deliveries of magazines that came in.

Kimblebee19 · 15/10/2020 20:01

I make up really random little nonsense songs. Sometimes ive been singing them a while before i realise what im saying. Some of them are quite catchy and they stay around, and ive caught my husband singing along. We sing randomly a lot actually - often, for some reason, about butts. Neighbours must think we're nuts.

I name all the neighbourhood cats, and if there are a batch of (small) spiders in my house then, hell, i'll name them too. It does make it worse when i have to hoover them up though. "Farewell Ann-Marie".

When i went to secondary school i used to (enthusiatically but subtly) walk around the hallways, down staircases, bursting through double doors etc. with the theme tune to Buffy going off in my head.

Hard to describe, but I sometimes get what ilI call 'Backgrounds' in my head. Just little scenes (like a dress draped over a chair blowing in a light breeze, or a theme like a chinese parade) that i havent intentionally thought about or am even really paying attention to, just vaguely aware of. Almost exclusively...during sex. Blush

I'm sure there is lots more weird things I do...i think the neighbours are right.

Maireas · 15/10/2020 20:01

Sometimes I tell her about the lovely son-in- law and grandchildren she never met, and how lucky I am.
Sometimes I tell her what a bitch my brother married Grin
