What makes someone look rich / wealthy?

Piggy backing onto the LV bag thread - so many responses saying you can tell if the bag is fake / real depending on the persons hair and general look.

I've really noticed this where I live during lockdown - even though we're all predominantly in scruffy clothes / gym gear (just me?!) you can just tell some people look 'rich' - for lack of a better word.

What is it? It's like an unspoken code or something.

In my experience people look rich, who are rich - it isn’t something you can emulate. It’s not to do with what you wear, necessarily. But that’s just my view.

EatPrayYoga · 13/10/2020 22:01

There was another thread like this very recently

You can probably find it in S&B

Seafog · 13/10/2020 22:02

Its surface and deep
On the surface, its things like hair cut , well cared for hands, always seasonal appropriate even if not new, never obviously over dressed

Below the surface it is self assuredness, an understanding of protocol and connections, and the right communications

IndecentFeminist · 13/10/2020 22:03

S&b have a lot of these threads.

Personally I think a lot of it is bearing and poise, as well as inner confidence.

Polished around the edges even if clothes are scruffy. A gloss.

cococovido · 13/10/2020 22:07

Thank you - will do a search!

@IndecentFeminist a gloss! That's the perfect way to describe it! I am very matte Grin

Good hair and excellent gait.

Tunnocks34 · 13/10/2020 22:09

Upper class I think they mostly always dress ‘rich’ and have an air of wealth around them.

Middle Class it becomes a bit more ambiguous. We have Plenty of money, but there are days when I walk round with my hair like a bird nest, and primark leggings on because I just cannot be arsed

Leaannb · 13/10/2020 22:12

I have money and usually just wear my scrubs and my hair up in a bun

Manteo · 13/10/2020 22:13

Look up the 'how to look expensive' threads

Intelinside57 · 13/10/2020 22:14

Very funny. My friend is wealthy beyond what most of us can imagine. Always looking windswept. Hands that do gardening. Expensive clothes worn in multiple layers but certainly not giving off an expensive look. Handbag thrown carelessly on the floor in pubs. Only wears makeup on evenings out and then it's discreet...

Pyewhacket · 13/10/2020 22:16

An Aston Martin .

I agree. Truly wealthy people don't advertise their wealth. I learned this from living in a very wealthy village, in the 70s/80s My parents were 'trade' as they had the newsagents/post office in the village where we lived. Titled people lived there as did a few celebrities and a few people who made money.

We had a few difficult winters where the paper boys/girls couldn't deliver the papers as the papers arrived too late. ( most people had their papers delivered back then.)

It was really interesting to note that a Lord of the Manor and an heiress arrived at my dad's shop to help deliver the papers.
It was also interesting to note that the lesser wealthy were on the phone complaining that their papers were late.
The pools winning family were vile and complained that my dad was an idiot and should be sacked!!!

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 22:31

Flying around everywhere in your own helicopter

Having 8 massive mansions

Owning the koh I Noor diamond

That would indicate wealth.

CSIblonde · 13/10/2020 22:33

I grew up in an 'old money' rural area. M&S & John Lewis for everything. Minimal make up. And they keep clothes, stuff , furniture for years because it's all timeless classics that don't date. New money is too many designer labels & looking over groomed & try hard & slavishly following every trend.

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 22:39

What sort of wealth are you looking to project?

In my area there's a fair bit of more ostentatious wealth and for women I think looking the part means putting in a fair bit of effort combined with not having to work too much/ worry about money.

Regular hairdresser
Care with clothes
Makeup

And driving around in a top of the range range rover with gold wheels etc helps Grin

Gym. Slim. Clothes look better.

Dunno.

I want to look good rather than wealthy Grin but can understand why the gloss is appealing!

Just goes to show that money alone can't buy you class.

Coconut2010 · 13/10/2020 22:40

Speaking from experience (I have been told I would look expensive or equivalent with a bin bag on):
Good skin and teeth
I agree with PP who says excellent gait
Very good manners
Being very slim is very forgiving (not-so-slim people can look expensive when they wear clothes which suit them)

Dashel · 13/10/2020 22:42

Also depends on the interests of the wealthy folk. I have known a few very wealthy women who wouldn’t trust anyone to look after their horses so regardless of whatever staff they have, would never have a groom and can often be found in old scruffy horsy type clothing

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2020 22:44

The poshest richest woman I ever knew

Loads of dogs, scruffy clothes
Really awful hair
Looked terrible as alcoholic chain smoker

That's probably not what you're going for.

It's interesting. Some people just look smart no matter what. DD1 is like that. Straight thick hair just needs a quick brush looks fab. Slender. Somehow, she always looks smart and put together even if her clothes are wrinkled etc.

Some people just have that thing. I don't btw!

What sort of look are you after? Can you give some examples.

ToastyCrumpet · 13/10/2020 22:48

Confidence: ‘the clothes I am wearing are the right clothes to wear because I’m the one wearing them.’ They must be good quality and if they are and they’re showing signs of wear, so much the better. Grooming and by that I mean well cut clean hair, minimal make up, manicured nails but no flashy coloured polish. Polished shoes, well kept clothes, no cheap jewellery. Jewellery should look as though it might be real even if it isn’t. And good manners. Be considerate. Act as though you expect the best from everyone and mostly you’ll get it.

Sparklesocks · 13/10/2020 22:54

Grooming and tailoring usually

Othering · 13/10/2020 22:57

Saw loads of them in an affluent area in London at the weekend. All in gym clothes, sweaty betty type, carrying Pilates mats, very slim with great shaped long lean legs, thick swishy hair, expensive colour, great skin and generally just that elusive rich look that is very hard to quantify.

Doughnutlady · 13/10/2020 22:59

Double Schoffe and multiple dogs.

purpledagger · 13/10/2020 22:59

On my way to work once as I was waiting to cross a road, a woman on a bike pulled up in front of me, also waiting to pull off. My first thought was that she obviously had money, by the way she was dressed. Looked up and it was Pippa Middleton.

It's all very understated, but it's you're obvious that you wouldn't find those items on the high street.
