Just finished watching this. I knew it was bad but not this grim. Eye opening even for me. I knew about the meat but not the fruit and veg. And apparently the trade deal will only benefit the UK economy by less than 1%!

As for breaking treaties, it's not like we don't have a track record of it. If I weren't English, I wouldn't trust the English government as far as I could throw them, after the behaviour on show in recent years. (And historically, come to that.) Actually, come to think of it, I AM English and I don't trust them.

That makes two of us then.

Is there a live petition on this? I will write to my MP but I feel increasingly desperate about it

Last year a petition of over 6 million signatures achieved the square root of fuck all, so I really don't understand this rather naive obsession with them now.

As a country we had our chance to avoid this and chose not to. Quite frankly it's a little unedifying to see the will of the people being so disrespected.

If you are horrified by this, and voted Tory, you aren't making any sense. This is what you voted for. It is exactly what you voted for. Too late now.

Doubletrouble99 · 15/10/2020 12:38

First of all Parliament did not vote to reduce food standards by rejecting the amendment to the Agriculture Bill. It was the wrong amendment on the wrong bill. The trade bill is the only one you can specify standards of imported food. So all you know it alls loving putting me down because of my naivety and my belief in Government lies, you carry on beating yourself up and frothing at the mouth over nonsensical amendment to the wrong bill.
You really enjoy putting Brexiters down and sounding so superior, well your not.

raspberryfields · 15/10/2020 12:42

Geez @SerendipityJane!

I did sign the original petition and I also didn't vote Tory. Was just asking what more I can do other than moaning on mumsnet!

Didlum · 15/10/2020 12:56

I'm a conservative voting Brexiteer
Thanks for voting to lower our food standards Hmm

I don’t understand why we are not to be ‘told’ what to do by the EU, but it’s fine to be ‘told’ by the US, Japan, Faroe Isles 🤦🏻‍♀️- all trade deals have elements of each side ‘telling’ the other, if that’s how you wish to view it. I despise the war narrative against the EU and currently against asylum seekers - what happened to #be kind anyway! It’s beyond abhorrent what is happening in so many areas driven mainly by Brexit and totally the current government, and will impact our descendants for such a long time. I am appalled I live in an intolerant, stupid filled country and so sad too for my grandchildren and their generation. I knew about the food, and signed the petition a while ago, but it won’t make a difference. I’m trying to source food more responsibly but not everyone can do this, and it can only become more difficult with time. One hope is US will refuse for the breach of the GFA, but that is an equally abhorrent outcome of Brexit in itself 😔

TheInebriati thats really not what 'neoliberal' means.

deedeegee · 15/10/2020 19:56

Part of the US food trade deal is that there's no labelling of country of origin for meat, fruit and veg. Additionally, US 'organic' is nothing like UK/EU 'organic'- it's substandard... bigly!

NellyJames · 16/10/2020 09:07

Should all this happen, there will definitely become a huge market in the UK for food that still confirms to the current standards. That’s assuming the farms are able to stay open long enough. However, it won’t be cheap so unfortunately it will be the poorest in society who will be forced to consume the (literal) shit coming in from the US.

Clavinova · 25/10/2020 13:29

Posted too soon - why would John Davidsons Butcher (or their suppliers) want to remove the labels from their premium US meat?

Fr0thandBubble · 25/10/2020 14:04

It's no picnic being a farmed animal in this country either. If you all claim to care so much, go vegan.

Doubletrouble99 · 25/10/2020 14:13

Don't be ridiculous Fr0handBubble. There's no comparison, our animals are properly treated for health complaints and the vast majority live in fields, for a start.
