AIBU to say no to Xbox Mon night to Thurs night

Hello

My 12 year old loves his Xbox, but I noticed that his homework and other stuff like music practice is being rushed so he can get to the Xbox. AIBU to say, no to computer games during the week (except Fri)?

What do other parents do?

Thanks 👍🙏

We do in term time.

HelloDulling · 12/10/2020 21:38

No computer games on a school day/night here.

WoahBodyforrrm · 12/10/2020 21:39

No computer games here either mon-fri during term time. My DS is 13 and since getting the Xbox has come to accept these are the rules!

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 12/10/2020 21:39

Watching with interest, in the same boat here but I feel a bit mean as all of his friends are clearly on it nightly and there is little else to do during the pandemic with no mixing of households so its his only escape but in principle I don’t think you are being unreasonable.

Lolalime · 12/10/2020 21:39

Not unreasonable at all, we have the same rule. It gives them a chance to do other things like drawing, playing with Lego etc

underneaththeash · 12/10/2020 21:47

We have the same rule too. DS’s are 14 and 12

AriettyHomily · 12/10/2020 21:47

We do the same in term time. Much easier.

WhatHaveIFound · 12/10/2020 21:48

We have the same rule. DS is in Y11 so very important that he's not gaming during the week (and staying up late).

Hiphopboppertybop99 · 12/10/2020 22:48

I don't think YABU ... however, are all his friends online? If its a case of him wanting to join in, like a PP said as that's what they're doing instead of going to park, no mixing of households etc?
If this is the case then can you come to an agreement, ie he has to have homework done thoroughly beforehand and limit the time each evening or perhaps he could have it on Tuesday and Wednesday evening only.... whichever option suits your household best.

MustDust · 12/10/2020 22:50

In term time it's banned Mon-Thurs, couldn't care less what friends are doing (12&16 here).

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2020 22:53

We say Xbox ok once homework and music practice/tutoring is done, regardless of day - as long as they stop to unwind and still get to bed on time, they're pretty good about it and it's a good carrot.

mooity · 12/10/2020 22:56

That’s the same rule in our house. DS11 initially resisted and told us everyone else was allowed on etc. A few weeks on and he’s actually thanked me as he says he doesn’t even think about gaming (specifically Fortnite!) during the week as he knows it’s not an option. We make sure he has gaming time at the weekend (and often more than his daily allowance!)
