I won't go into the long boring story, but we are looking to buy a touring caravan imminently and live in it full time for 6 months, staying in Caravan sites not in lockdown in the UK.

Obviously Covid is playing heavily on my mind and I'm hoping caravan sites won't be closed again, we were planning to spend the worst of the British winter over Christmas in Spain or Portgual, too.

Is this a crazy idea or am I overthinking and I should go off, take it as it comes and enjoy? Please reassure me!

Sounds pretty crazy to me - but admit I have never tried it.

AriettyHomily · 12/10/2020 12:59

Nuts. What if they lock down wherever you are and shut the sites?

Outside of Covid, brilliant idea. My friends do it every year in portugal. There's loads of them that do it.

If sites do shut we have somewhere we can store the caravan for free and can stay with family (not ideal but last resort) so there would be a very loose back-up plan! But would still cause a bit of stress...

Part of me is thinking this is crazy and the other is saying life is short, can't worry about what may/may not happen...

You’d be surprised at how many people do this, Op, though I imagine it’s not quite so straightforward at the current time.
Have a look at the Camping and Caravan Club or similar organisations websites, you should get some ideas/links to blogs/advise on how to go about this.
We take our campervan away for 3-4 weeks at a time, but not longer, but meet up with people on sites that are away for months, especially over the winter.
You will also need to think about home insurance etc if you are going away for prolonged periods and leaving your home empty.

Thanks, Faded. There is no issues with home insurance, as we are between houses, hence the need of caravan, thinking it'll be a safer/cheaper/more fun option than AirBnb!

As long as you organise things as much as possible around Covid I would go for it!

BobsyerUncleFannysyerAunt · 12/10/2020 13:25

It's sounds great, I'd love to do it. Just try and cover all bases

CoxwellHuge · 12/10/2020 13:28

Don't most caravan sites close down for about 6 weeks after Christmas and new year? I'm sure there's usually a planning condition to stop people living there full-time. I think there are a small number that allow habitation all year round but not all do so I'd look out for that.

It will be very very cold. So therefore miserable.

FadedRed · 12/10/2020 13:43

There are touring sites in YK and Europe that are open all year, many offer ‘seasonal rates” for long term stays.
Our campervan is ‘winterised’ and we have been fine with overnight temperatures of minus 30. Winter opening sites in cold countries have heated facilities, laundries and drying areas etc. You just need to have the right type of van/clothing/equipment (including winter tyres/snow chains if you go to where the snow and ice is likely to be 😁)
