To ask if anybody is awake that can give an opinion on my ankle?

Tumbled downstairs earlier. Bloody hurt in the moment but no popping or snapping sounds as I turned my ankle.

Looking a bit dodgy IMO now. Can't figure out from the NHS website if it's appropriate to go to minor injuries tomorrow or should I give it more time?

Will attempt to add pic....

Looked like this earlier. I feel the injured side is a different color now?

Ice it and raise it, if not gone down I would go to minor injuries. If it has then I would be at physio / doctors still on Monday. Hope you’re ok op, I’ve had a dodgy ankle now since doing similar in March Confused

ShennaIsAPrawnCracker · 11/10/2020 01:25

Oh no Confused I have iced it and it's now propped up as I try to sleep on my back!

Hope you healing up slowly but surely.

Looks sprained, elevate it & put on an ice pack or bag of peas. See what it's like in the morning.Flowers

I injured my ankle ligaments many years ago in a fall. The evening I did it, I managed to walk on it and got upstairs. It got worse over night as the swelling started. I went to A&E the next day and was put in a temporary cast until I could get to the fracture clinic a couple of days later (it was a weekend). I was then in a cast for about eight weeks.

Your first photo looks a bit like mine did, I think if it is like that or worse in the morning, you need to go in.

Feefifo9 · 11/10/2020 01:29

Ouch. I would got to minor injuries with that personally and I haven’t been in decades for myself.

ShennaIsAPrawnCracker · 11/10/2020 01:30

Thank you. Just wanted some reassurance so I can relax and fall asleep I think!

Sorry. 😢. Actually yours doesn’t look quite as bad as mine did the following morning, but if it carries on swelling up then it would be getting there.

Twigletfairy · 11/10/2020 01:41

Yeah looks like soft tissue damage to my untrained eye. As others have said, ice it and elevate it and see how you can get on. Depending on the damage, sometimes you need physio to prevent problems in the future

YayGlitter · 11/10/2020 01:44

Looks sprained to me. Take a couple of Ibuprofen, put it up and try to get some sleep. It's still going to hurt in the morning. If it swells any more or changes colour, or feels like pins and needles go to minor injuries tomorrow, but it's not going to get better overnight so I'd only go if it's worse, not just if theres no change. If there's no improvement at all by monday morning go to your GP.

ShennaIsAPrawnCracker · 11/10/2020 01:44

I've just hopped to the loo, and it does look a more normal colour after being elevated a good while so 🤞🤣

I did the same thing during the last lock down.
I didn’t go to hospital.
After a month it was still painful and bruised.
I had an MRI scan and it was fractured plus soft tissue damage. As there was evidence of healing I was given a boot and crutches rather than plaster. If I had gone immediately to hospital it would have been put in a plaster cast.
I hope you have only sprained yours.
Probably I delayed the whole process by not going to A and E in the first instance but it did heal finally!
Good luck.

Compression bandage to hemp control the swelling, ice it, keep it raised, anti-inflammation meds, rest

Make sure you get it checked m.
I had what I thought looked like a mild sprain but turned out to be a fracture while another time The GP was sure I had broken my ankle (it was horrifically swollen and black) but turned out to be ligament damage.

Happytobeme123 · 11/10/2020 02:43

Ice, elevation and a compression bandage. My daughter sprained her ankle and we applied ice for days. It was the compression bandage that helped the swellong to come down.
Hope it gets better soon.

Torvean32 · 11/10/2020 04:34

Looks like you've at least twisted your left ankle. Are you able to take paracetamol and ibuprofen?

. Then its the RICE policy. So Rest it , Ice , Compress, Elevate.

Dont use anything like tubigrip its frowned on now. Depending what you do reg work etc. give it 72 hours.

If you can't weight bear at all. Or the bruising and swelling get severe call 111.

coastergirl · 11/10/2020 06:28

Ankles are funny things. Over the past few years I've sprained mine badly three times (left one twice, right one once). The first two times they were such a horrific swollen, bruised mess that the doctors were shocked they weren't broken. But I think the opposite can happen too. I'd probably give it a bit of time and get it checked out if it isn't improving.

Avelosa · 11/10/2020 07:01

Mine looked like that when I fell down some steps. I left it for a while, but it got so painful that I ended up going to minor injuries. Turned out I had broken a bone in my ankle and one in my foot, but they were tiny ones that you wouldn’t hear breaking. I would go if I was you

Mysa74 · 11/10/2020 09:01

Mine looked like that when I tripped down a pothole. A friend gave me a lift home as I couldn't put enough pressure on it to change gear, although I could just Bout hobble. I did the RICE thing for 2 days which reduced the swelling, but it still hurt to stand on and my sister dragged me to A&E. I only went to prove I was ok. Turns out it was broken in 2 places, thin leg bone had broken and the sticky out bit on the inside of my ankle had snapped right off. They operated then put me in plaster... Only then did it start to hurt... so just shows you never can tell. Good luck OP

jalopy · 11/10/2020 09:02

Get it checked. You might have cracked your fibula.

CecilyP · 11/10/2020 09:10

If you can't weight bear at all. Or the bruising and swelling get severe call 111.

If you can’t weight bear at all, get to a and e. No one can diagnose over the telephone.

ShennaIsAPrawnCracker · 11/10/2020 10:34

Thanks all. It is better this morning (less swollen and painful, still can't walk on it although can put a bit of my weight through it) but I'm going to get checked out in any case. Better safe than sorry and all that!
