To ask about Philips Lumea

PinkiOcelot · 10/10/2020 22:33

I’m aware this is AIBU, but posting for for traffic before DD spends £250 on the Philips Lumea.
DD has polycystic ovaries and suffers from thick, dark hair on her legs. She’s tried numerous things but even shaving results in red lumps all over her legs.
She is thinking about investing in a Philips Lumea and would like some opinions and experiences please.
Thanks in advance.

I love mine, but should use it more often. If it tells you to start on level 5, don't! I had a really itchy rash that was rather annoying, Diane happen on level 3 Grin
For me, worth the money, and if she's going to use it regularly I think she'll be very happy with it

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 10/10/2020 22:36

I had a boots equivalent years ago and was disappointed with it, especially because I was pale skinned and dark haired. It may be that things have moved on, or that IPL just doesn’t suit me.

doingmeheadin · 10/10/2020 22:37

Well worth it. Mine is still going strong after about 10 years!

PinkiOcelot · 10/10/2020 22:38

@TestingTestingWonTooFree did it just not work for you or did you have a reaction to it?

PinkiOcelot · 10/10/2020 22:39

That’s good to know @doingmeheadin

I’ve just bought one and it’s too early to tell, but I did do a lot of research first. The majority of advice was to buy the prestige models or it isn’t worth your time. So you’ll need to spend £350+ but apparently it’s worth it.

PinkiOcelot · 10/10/2020 22:40

@WineAndTiramisu thanks. I’ll tell her to watch for that x

@CherryPieface ahh really. That’s an awful lot of money isn’t it?

I haven’t seen the results I was hoping for and slightly disappointed to be honest. I will carry on with it, but certainly haven’t seen results after several treatments. I have dark hair and pale skin, and have followed all the instructions to the letter...

MissyBB · 10/10/2020 22:43

Pale skin and dark hair is the perfect combination for Lumea target. I've had mine for 7 yrs, it's fantastic cant recommend more.

Parkmama · 10/10/2020 22:43

I've been using mine on my underarms since July and it's definitely slowing down the growth. The suggested plan had me going into maintenance mode only after a few weeks which felt ambitious as there was still plenty of regrowth even if it was a bit sparse, so I just routinely shave whatever is there and zap it (technical term?!) every 2 weeks and I would say it's getting thinner all the time. It's more of a marathon and less of a sprint. I used level 5 right away and it's been fine. I would say yes go for it, but ensure she gets into a regular routine of doing it or it's pointless

Merryoldgoat · 10/10/2020 22:43

IPL won’t help with hair caused by PCOS - hormonal hair will just grow back.

There is no permanent hair removal treatment for PCOS

She needs to find the best non-invasive hair removal method for her.

It’s utterly shit.

Merryoldgoat · 10/10/2020 22:45

She needs proper management before hair removal.

CherryPieface · 10/10/2020 22:47

@PinkiOcelot yes, a huge amount of money. I had a little windfall so thought I would go for it. If it works I think it will be worth it. I hope your daughter finds something that works for her xxx

MyEnormousTurnip · 10/10/2020 22:49

I love mine. Bed thing I ever bought. And I have the cheapest model. Been upsettingly hairy all my life and am now lay in bed feeling my silky legs. I still get some hair but it’s soft and pale and I shave it off about once a month.

There was a poster with pcos who used it for her chin and neck hairs I think. It was her thread that inspired me to buy one. Long thread in S&B.

allotmentgardener · 10/10/2020 22:54

I wish I'd bought one years ago. And I had nasty black facial whiskers. A new ingrowings now but a vast improvement. I dont shave my face anymore and it used to be a twice daily activity. Although it does take time. For results.

AnnaSW1 · 10/10/2020 22:54

It's fantastic. Better results than salon laser for me. By a long way. She should get it

zigzagbetty · 10/10/2020 22:56

I would go for the prestige one but get it tracked on camel camel camel as it will go down in price quite dramatically a few times a year. You can set up an alert for a reduction in price.
I have PCOS and had an older version, it did slow down growth and patches were thinner but its not going to have the full removal effect of non hormonal hair. I lost mine and when I found it a couple of years later if just wouldn't work Hmm even so I am going to buy the prestige when it comes down in price and give it another go. It is a bit painful though, especially on thicker hair.
I am on metformin from the doctors which helps a bit with the symptoms.

mashainpink · 10/10/2020 22:58

I have the basic Lumea which i bought years ago and forgot about it (pregnancies and babies!) but started in March doing my legs every 2 weeks and I've definitely seen results. It's taken far longer than I expected but the results are there!!

Lockdownlumpy · 10/10/2020 23:06

I've been looking at these.
How long does it take to zap a half leg ankle to knee? I'm wondering if it's really time consuming in the beginning when you need to do it more often.

jakeyboy1 · 10/10/2020 23:07

@allotmentgardener how do you use it on your face? I read you are meant to shave first but what if you're a plucker not a shaver - I don't want to make it worse!

Autumngoldleaf · 10/10/2020 23:21

merryoldgoat.. That's an incredible article on it.
It should be posted on all these type of threads!

Thank you. I've been tempted to get one but will steer clear at least on my face.

For legs op, wouldn't waxing be better?

Spiderysummer · 10/10/2020 23:33

I had a Braun version at Christmas and have been very pleased with it in that I am able to go 1-2 weeks without shaving my legs.
I have PCOS and the hair on my legs is thick and dark. However it is not permenant, I used it for 12 weeks and had lovely smooth hairless legs with no dark dots under my skin. I use it every 2 weeks and I am very happy with that. If I don't do it regularly it starts to grow back in patches. I find it's actually quite quick to do now as shaving is so much faster before treatment. As long as your daughter understands that, I'm sure she will be pleased.
I also use a small laser designed for home use on my facial hair, again been delighted with results but it needs a top up or it grows back. Never tried ipl on my face as I bought the laser before I had the ipl machine.

UserABCDE12345 · 10/10/2020 23:35

I have the prestige and it was worth every penny. I have dark hair that grows fast and this slowed it right down with patches that don't grow at all.

With the right attachment, nothing wrong with using it on your face. I use hair removal cream on my face first.

RoseTintedAtuin · 11/10/2020 00:08

Worked great for me. Need to be more regular with it but it definitely worked for my skin/hair combo (pale skin with dark hair).
