To ask about Philips Lumea

PinkiOcelot · 10/10/2020 22:33

I’m aware this is AIBU, but posting for for traffic before DD spends £250 on the Philips Lumea.
DD has polycystic ovaries and suffers from thick, dark hair on her legs. She’s tried numerous things but even shaving results in red lumps all over her legs.
She is thinking about investing in a Philips Lumea and would like some opinions and experiences please.
Thanks in advance.

Pale skin and dark hair here and it's only the area aound my knees and the bony bits of my anles that still needs shaving.

PickAChew · 11/10/2020 00:12
@allotmentgardener how do you use it on your face? I read you are meant to shave first but what if you're a plucker not a shaver - I don't want to make it worse!
You need to shave and not pluck because it can't destoy the hair follicle without a bit of hair to boil.

Aria2015 · 11/10/2020 00:14

Worked great for me. I have pale skin and dark hair. I just wish I'd got one sooner! If my dd grows up to be as hairy as me I'd definitely recommend it over waxing, shaving or epilating. It's time consuming but worth it!

Itisbetter · 11/10/2020 00:17

IPL won’t help with hair caused by PCOS - hormonal hair will just grow back. I don’t think this is true for me. I have severe pcos (needed ivf to get pregnant and barely menstruate) and I found it extremely helpful.

SimplyRadishing · 11/10/2020 02:14

Honestly 8 sessions at a decent laser place will be money way better spent and won't cost that much more
There are really good deals to be had right now) but do research your laser!!!
I used an alexandrite and got amazing results I am v pale with mid/dark brown hair under arm and bikini.

I got a Philips to do my legs its "fine" but honestly if she has a lot of hair just get a package deal and laser it all now. You are done in under a year i have 85-90% reduction its incredible.

Ratsindahouse · 11/10/2020 04:54

I bought one - used it once and then read the instructions properly. It advises you not to use them if you get cold sores (which I do). Very expensive mistake for me 🙁

coastergirl · 11/10/2020 05:43

I have very pale skin and very thick, dark hair which grows so quickly. I got a Boots version about ten years ago and never got on with it. The handset did such a tiny area that it would have taken forever and I found it quite painful. I'd love to find something that would work. My skin reacts really badly to all other types of hair removal, especially if done regularly, so I end up just being hairy which I hate.

Wallywobbles · 11/10/2020 06:33

I have had mine done by a proper dermatologist. You are probably looking at £1000 though. I have about 20 hairs left on my legs. Not enough to do anything ever really. Same with bikini line.

Didn't work so well on my face but finer and less. I went 2 monthly for electrolysis, now 6 monthly. That really hurts but does get the white ones.

beautifulmonument · 11/10/2020 06:55

I started using the lumea a year ago, it was a gift. I'm rubbish at doing it regularly as I can never be bothered / can never find the time but despite my very sporadic usage it's worked amazingly well. I hardly need to shave at all now
My hair is dark blond/light brown and skin is light but tans easily.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 11/10/2020 07:04

Absolutely worth it - love mine. But as others have said

 1. Track the price of it on Amazon as it always comes down in BlackFridays and stuff. Never pay full price
 2. It only works if you have pale-ish skin. Think dark hair is a great candidate but only works on lighter skin tones.
 3. Long term you have to keep up with it a bit and I’ve got lazy with mine but it does really work.
CreepyPasta · 11/10/2020 08:11

Hi OP

I have PCOS too and found that it worked on my leg and underarm hairs but not facial, arm and stomach hair. If your DD’s excess hair is hormonal then the only treatment that will work is electrolysis. Vaniqa cream will slow the hair growth down but a lot of GP’s won’t prescribe it anymore. You can still get a private prescription online though.

PinkiOcelot · 11/10/2020 11:05

@Autumngoldleaf unfortunately waxing had the same result as shaving. She only did 1 strip and couldn’t bear to touch it for 3-4 days.

I absolutely love mine. Zero underarm hair. Zero 'outside your knicker line' pubic hair. Getting towards zero leg hair (those were my priorities in that order). I'm a huge fan and I know DD will need it due to dark hair growing on her legs. It does need topping up as per the app schedule but I spend FAR less time than I would shaving often.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 11/10/2020 12:23

.

MrDarcysMa · 12/10/2020 10:35

I've been using mine about a month and am seeing a big difference. About 50% of my leg hair gone after 2 treatments.

It's a bit frustrating as you want to use it more often to see a result quicker but you have to take your time and stick to every 2 weeks.
It's done wonders in my bikini line where the hair is thicker and darker. So imagine for pale wispy hair it's not worth it.

MrDarcysMa · 12/10/2020 10:38

The only thing I struggled with was having to shave my bikini line (I'm used to waxing) it literally kept me awake for about 2 weeks as he was so itchy !
If recommend a Korea Italy exfoliating cloth and some ameliorate or similar lotion to manage the regrowth after shaving if you're not used to it.

Onxob · 12/10/2020 10:43

It worked well on my legs initially but you have to keep using it all the time or the hair just comes back. I did seven sessions and assumed that would be that and I could just leave my legs with the occasional top up but nope. Hair back with a vengeance. It's so time consuming I don't know if I can be arsed when shaving is quicker but it was so expensive I feel I should probably use it!

jakeyboy1 · 13/10/2020 21:03

Right ladies - which one??

To ask about Philips Lumea
pineapplepalmtree · 13/10/2020 21:04

they work but I need to use it weekly to keep the results , which gets boring really quickly!

Youneverknowwhatyourgonnaget · 13/10/2020 21:12

Best money I have ever spent!! I have spent so much money and years and years being miserable and self conscious about hair and this has been a game changer! I think I paid £300 but that was reduced from about £500 I think but if it broke tomorrow I would happily pay the £500! Before if I shaved my legs a couple of hours later I would have stubble and my arms caused me years of embarrassment now I don’t even think about it just once a month do a top up and that’s it!

Suzyseis · 13/10/2020 21:21

Mine changed my life, as others have said I would repurchase tomorrow if mine broke. Initially I used it every week (I’m a rule breaker!) and had Amazing results. My bikini line has taken a bit longer and I still get the odd under arm hair but compared to what in used to have this is bliss. I do t suffer from PCOS though, I’m just hairy

kissmysass · 13/10/2020 21:24

Can I ask those who say how amazing its been.. is your hair very thick? Mine is dark and very thick, courtesy of Italian ancestry. I'm nervous everyone recommending it just had quite thin hair?!

CoatesCat · 13/10/2020 21:52

I have thick black hairs and pcos. I've had professional laser hair removal before but it all grew back. I love my lumea and like other posters would replace it if it broke. My legs, under arms and inside of my thighs are hair free now. I'm still working on my bikii line but theres definitely much less regrowth each time. I haven't been using it on my chin as I use retinol. If your daughter has pcos she should realise its going to take longer than they suggest in the manual and she will have to do top ups. But for convenience (especially during lock down) its been great.
