What shifts would you work?

24 hours per week
2 - 12 hour shifts
One week day & one weekend day.
One 7am-7pm shift & one 7pm-7am.

I’m thinking best way would be
Wednesday 7am-7pm
Saturday night 7pm-7am.
Means only 1 day childcare needed & I don’t waste the entire weekend with the kids.

Aibu? Is there a better way?!

Or Sun night shift then Thu or Fri day shift. Doing this you could have all weekend with kids and only one day child care if you stayed up all day Monday.

I’d probably do the Sunday night into Monday (if that counts as weekend ) and then Thursday during the day . That way you get the entire weekend daytime off and could feasibly still only need 1 day of childcare ( Thursday) as you can just stay up on Monday and have an early night . Depends how well you cope with night work .

Not saturday night - its the worse one. You need a rest on Saturday and then spend Sunday knackered. It steels your whole weekend.

Friday night - with a lazy Saturday and then a proper Sunday. Or Sunday after the weekend, and the kids are in school (if old enough) on the Monday so its easier for a nap.
Best would be Monday day and Thursday night, or Monday night and Friday night. But do Friday/Sunday if you have to do a do a weekend.
Don't underestimate how tiring nights are!

Sunday night shift - Genius. Makes much more sense... thanks wise mumsnetters!

Kids are pre school... thinking I can manage one day a week on no sleep... but no more!

Try to avoid nights if it's financially viable to do so, regarding childcare.

Definitely do not do Saturday night - your whole weekend will be dominated by that one shift.

You have it looming all day Saturday, then you'll be semi-comatosed all day Sunday.

SideAfries · 10/10/2020 16:20

Job requires I do one day & one night unfortunately @Westfacing childcare costs is also a factor even if they didn’t... I’ve never done nights before, hoping I’ll get used to it.

It’s fine not sleeping for a day , stick them in front of the TV for an hour while you doze on the settee in the morning and then a brisk walk in the afternoon , it works really well .

SideAfries · 10/10/2020 16:35

Thanks @Floralnomad that’s what I had hoped it’s reassuring to hear!

Would you get paid more for the Saturday night?

SideAfries · 10/10/2020 17:08

@Toddlerteaplease I don’t think so.
