Wellies for delicate feet - anywhere on High street?

So, I'm probably being unreasonable as most people I know can buy any old footwear and blightly gallivant without concern for their feet.
My feet appear to be unusual. I must emphasise that they are perfectly normal looking feet to the innocent eye.
However. I constantly suffer from blisters on the back of the heels and on each side of the balls of my feet if you get me.
I've small feet technically, size 3.5/4 but the bones in my feet seem wide at the base of toes, so shoes always seem to squash my feet/toes terribly.

I'm looking for some recommendations of somewhere that I could walk into and actually try the wellies on as I will know within 2 paces whether something is going to hurt my feet.

My plan for the winter is to do a lot of soggy forest trails, but I can't bear footwear giving me blisters. I suppose I could bring plasters with me, but ideally I'd like to try them on before buying. Price isn't really an issue as I will be cancelling my gym membership most likely.

I genuinely have never seen a proper wellie shop in my area of London.

Please help out a girl with two awkward feet?

I have similarly small and wide feet, and suffer from plantar fasciitis. My advice is - drop the idea of wellies, and get some good boots instead. Wellies give no support for walking, flap about and give me blisters. Good lace up boots in wide fit, which you can lace tightly to support your ankles, will be miles better, and if you don’t want to get your trousers wet, add waterproof gaiters or over trousers, or just tuck your trousers into your nice warm woolly walking socks.

You can get good boots from places along the high street - Blacks/ Millets, Cotswold Outdoor, Go Outdoors, etc etc. Places with serious boots expect you to try lots on and want you to get the best fit.

Dobbies, try on hunters and then buy online because they can be so much cheaper online.

Shoppingwithmother · 09/10/2020 19:39

I have some of the same problems- very easily get blisters on the back of my heels and have wide feet (although mine are big too!)
I wear Hunter Balmorals which are wider and more sturdy than the normal ones. I know that Hunters are not what they were, but they work for me.

Flyonthewall01 · 09/10/2020 19:42

Try country boots instead of wellies as they will offer more support. I have some ariat ones which are so comfy and have a proper in sole inside them

Cabinfever10 · 09/10/2020 19:44

Please don't buy hunters
I'm a size 3F (really wide small feet) I agree with @AdoptAdaptImprove about boots but if you really want wellies try a size bigger ie size 5 with good thick socks and a good insole the school gel ones are amazing

treeeeemendous · 09/10/2020 19:44

Walking boots are your friend. Wellies are dreadful for walking in it.

MJMG2015 · 09/10/2020 19:46

You're not alone! I have the same size feet as you & get blisters in the same places. I HATE buying shoes. Found Sketchers a few years ago and REALLY hate anything else now!! I NEED some winter walking shoes too, but sketchers don't have anything and my last few pairs of boots/merrels/gortex have not worked out!!

enjoyingscience · 09/10/2020 19:48

Agree - get some decent walking boots. I’ve got some awesome ones from decathlon, (so not even technically decent) which are waterproof and so much comfier and warmer than wellies.

Dancingwithdaftness · 09/10/2020 19:54

I've tried on a few pairs of hiking boots and they instantly skinned my heels. None of the shop names mentioned are near me (nor have I heard of them). I'll have to google an outdoors store I guess. I really need to try before buying because some footwear can crucify me.
I don't want to get fabric walking boots and get them covered in mud on Day 1 and never be able to clean them. Leather you might as well say goodnight to as it's too abrasive. I need a big wide clod hopper haha

Could anyone recommending provide links to what you're talking about? I've never heard of walking boots. I can google, but if you can recommend a brand or store in particular I would appreciate it.

You’ve got a very old fashioned idea of walking boots. The old leather ones you had to break in are a thing of the past. Look for GoreTex - fabric, but completely waterproof. Other shops to try include Mountain Warehouse.

I’d recommend finding your local equestrian wear place and going there . I walk a lot all year and wear either Woof Wear short yard boots or Dublin River boots and can highly recommend both . My daughter has very small feet and she also gets on fine with the Woof Wear Boots

Dancingwithdaftness · 09/10/2020 20:07

Well Uxbridge is a bit far away. I googled equestrian wear near me. Nothing near me at all. Sports Direct lol. Might try it if only to prove to myself that my feet are as odd as two left boots.

I live in a flat, so don't have a yard to hose myself down in btw.

I have the tall slim hunters and honestly they fit more like a boot than a Welly. Nice and snug and my feet don't move around in them at all

Booboobibles · 09/10/2020 20:11

I had some called Lowther, which are apparently made by Hunter but they don’t seem to make them anymore. They were brilliant....really comfy and lasted ages.

So I’d recommend Hunter although they were too expensive for me so I got Cotswold ones instead. They’re not too bad with thick socks but I wish I’d just got the Hunter wellies.

InTheLongGrass · 09/10/2020 20:11

Aparently my toes are long, making my foot wide in the wrong place.... makes shoe buying hard.
I wont touch wellies. Walking boots all the way for muddy, outside stuff. Yes, they get a bit muddy, but most of it comes off with either a rinse under tye outside rap, or leaving them to dry and brush it off.

Mine are like these. DH prefers leather. Both of us wear 2 pairs of socks - a thin pair of cotton, like our normal socks, then a thick pair of walking socks over the top. Many people just wear thick walking socks. You need to try the boots on with thick socks on. Definitely try them on. Google an outdoor shop near you, and be prepared to try every size 4 in the shop. Ignore what they look like. Muddy walks through woods need comfort, not style.

Asdf12345 · 09/10/2020 20:13

I swear by agile parcours iso. Neoprene lined, warm and comfy, fit like slippers. Still hand made in France, you would probably be looking for a gun shop rather than high street shop though.

Agreenwith others that walking boots are your friend.
I have wide feet and suffer with blisters in shoes I've owned for years sometimes, it seems to entirely depend on what mood my feet are in on any given day.

I have some walking boots made by craghopper (I think that's the brand) that are waterproof and so comfy. I wear double layered walking socks that are reinforced in areas likely to blister.

Karrimoor not craghopper. They are similar to what someone has linked above. Xracking pair of boots.
Peachypips78 · 09/10/2020 20:21

Scarpa leather walking boots. I am size 4 but very wide toes and flat feet.

Peachypips78 · 09/10/2020 20:24

These are mine- required no wearing in at all as they are a new generation of boots. Waterproof right up to the top of the ankle too!

Do you have heel Spurs? I got mine removed as a teen thankfully.

Still have stupidly wide feet.

Have walking boots with orthopaedic insoles, same for my wellies but would never plan to walk in them that far as there is zero support.
