Wellies for delicate feet - anywhere on High street?

So, I'm probably being unreasonable as most people I know can buy any old footwear and blightly gallivant without concern for their feet.
My feet appear to be unusual. I must emphasise that they are perfectly normal looking feet to the innocent eye.
However. I constantly suffer from blisters on the back of the heels and on each side of the balls of my feet if you get me.
I've small feet technically, size 3.5/4 but the bones in my feet seem wide at the base of toes, so shoes always seem to squash my feet/toes terribly.

I'm looking for some recommendations of somewhere that I could walk into and actually try the wellies on as I will know within 2 paces whether something is going to hurt my feet.

My plan for the winter is to do a lot of soggy forest trails, but I can't bear footwear giving me blisters. I suppose I could bring plasters with me, but ideally I'd like to try them on before buying. Price isn't really an issue as I will be cancelling my gym membership most likely.

I genuinely have never seen a proper wellie shop in my area of London.

Please help out a girl with two awkward feet?

I used to let my boots dry on newspaper then scrape them off when I lived in a flat.
I also have similar feet and I find Merrill works for me.

Swearwolf · 10/10/2020 09:01

I bought regular wellies in a size 4, bigger than my usual, and bought some lovely thick sheepskin inner soles to put in them. It was a game changer! I can wear them for ages and they stay warm too.

SmilingAloe · 10/10/2020 09:11

I have similar feet, I get a lot of blisters and struggle to find things that fit well.
I have had a pair of Aigle wellies that I found very comfy. Now I tend to wear Dubarry country boots for walking, not cheap but I find them very comfy and they are waterproof.

@CherryPavlova

Farlows are very good at finding the right boots. Very helpful staff willing for you to try on every item of footwear in the shop.
I will try Farlows, I think that's the one someone mentioned in Pall Mall? Totteham Court Road has a Mountain Warehouse too. Might be a Decathlon near Oxford St/Tottenham Court road too. Not going to go today I think, but some day next week.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with unusual feet. Everyone thinks I have to be exaggerating and 'how could trainers possibly hurt you?' until I show them the blisters. I will definitely have to try them on as some that look comfy can be torture implements, so will take a shopping trip into central london some day next week. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Yes Pall Mall, on corner opposite Athenaeum.

Are your feet small enough to get into the biggest croc wellies? They are made of foam so much softer on the feet.

I had some great superlite ones, but I don't know if the company still exists. They were "SUPERLITE STRATUS"

Otherwise any running shop will sell trail running shoes. I love Salomon goretex ones, but you must wear the right socks, Decathlon do good ones that are padded in the right places.
Some of my friends swear by inov8 ones.

Surely getting some and wearing them around your flat then returning them if they're not right is better than "hauling ass" all over London?

(Where are you going to do all these muddy trails in central London?!)

Dancingwithdaftness · 10/10/2020 09:50

Here are pictures of the offending foot. They don't look particularly wide to me, but shoes don't seem to be wide enough. Heels hurt halfway up the back where bones stick out. Looking at the photo, my heels look very bony but I've never compared other peoples feet with mine. Another place they can hurt is under the ankle bones that stick out or rub against the ankle bones if high tops. As you can see I've quite a high instep too. And to add insult to injury my left foot is size 3.5 and right foot is size 4, so when I wear heels, I inevitably slip out of the left shoe.

Should have at least put nail varnish on for the sake of the pics. Apologies to anyone with a phobia of feet for the photos. Not the prettiest of critters.

I'm not too central. Epping Forest.

I find I'm far less likely to return items once they've been delivered to me. I'm far enough away from a post office that it's a bit of a mission to get to one and it would possibly mean multiple attempts at finding the right ones. Best to go in somewhere and hopefully find someone who knows what they're talking about.

Try keens walking shoes/boots they have a wide toe box...I have the targus ? Waterproof....on my second pair ...shopped around last year and couldn't find any better..First lasted years (camp and walk a lot!) Cotswold sometimes sell them but bought direct from keen this time and returns no problem...
I have never worn a pair of wellies that don't kill my feet ...

MollyButton · 10/10/2020 10:12

My properly fitted leather walking boots gave me very few blisters at first, and now have lasted 30+ years. They were "expensive" when I bought them but a sign that quality pays. Go to a proper (or a few proper) hiking shops. Try on lots.
Top tips: SOCKS are important, ideally ones that are thick enough, and uptodate thinking is one good pair rather than two pairs. Talk to shops about socks.
If your toes can slide forward and tough the end, then they are too big (or not laced enough).

movingonup20 · 10/10/2020 10:14

Buy waterproof hiking boots and nikwax for extra protection otherwise use insoles in wellies, they come up large so a 4 with a gel insole might work

InTheLongGrass · 10/10/2020 10:17

I'd say you have the same problem as me - long toes, so your foot is wide where it's not expected, rather than wide per se.

Good luck shopping.

movingonup20 · 10/10/2020 10:18

@Dancingwithdaftness
Hiking shops like Blacks and Mountain Warehouse are on most high streets, I recommend the later for affordable outdoor gear. But if you can get yourself to go outdoors they have a huge selection.

movingonup20 · 10/10/2020 10:20

@Dancingwithdaftness

Ps I grew up in London and blacks and millets were on every high street. We went hiking a couple of times a month on the north downs, londoners do hike

stormsurfer · 10/10/2020 10:27

Fitflop have just launched a wellie. They might give you the support you're after? And they do free delivery and free return so you won't need to track around shops to try them on. Many shoe companies do that now.

Dancingwithdaftness · 10/10/2020 10:33

your foot is wide where it's not expected, rather than wide per se. That could be hitting the nail on the head. Shoes can look wide, but still are hurting me. Maybe the wide part of my foot is not where it should be.

Oh and re socks: 1000 mile socks have two layers and that helps a lot.

pickingdaisies · 10/10/2020 11:48

Something else to think about is the way you lace up your trainers. Look up lace locking, it helps to hold your heel in place in your trainers. There are lots of alternative ways of lacing trainers up to accommodate different shapes of feet.

Pikachubaby · 10/10/2020 11:49

Mole country stores

Leave London for the day and find one?

OhioOhioOhio · 10/10/2020 11:56

Omg I've found my tribe. I hate buying shoes too. Absolutely hate it.

Blooblaableep · 10/10/2020 12:00

I have feet like yours op. I don't know if any of these places do wellies but I've been debating splashing out on either custom made shoes (if you Google this, there is a shop in London), or using somewhere like: solebliss.com

I am waiting until I have the money to splash out with!
