To be furious and ask for my money back

My dishwasher broke a few days ago, with the soap compartment not opening during the wash and I called the best rated repair person in the area, as listed on a well known trades rating/checking website.

Since then its been 4 visits, a total of £211 parts and labour, replacing the entire soap/rinse aid dispenser and much of the internal wiring. Yet still the soap dispenser door does not open during the wash, seemingly no matter what their repair person tries/replaces so far.

The repair person seems very laid back about it all, not understanding how inconvenient and time consuming this repeated visits are. He keeps doing a possible fix, putting the machine on and leaving. Then I have to call him once more and say yet again whatever you didn't hasn't worked, so come back and try again. No apology from him and no acknowledgement that this is poor service.

At this point I'm furious, out of pocket and AIBU to demand my money back for incompetent work, if the repair person cannot fix it tomorrow on their 5th visit?

@Baaaahhhhh

A little tip from my repair man, always use extra salt if you use just tablets. The tablets are not sufficient to keep the pipe work lime free. He must be right.....as ours has lasted all that time.
I don’t use any salt as I live in an area with very soft water. We don’t have any lime in ours.

I don't think you would get anywhere, as PP's have said. He's done stuff, a different solution each time. That it hasn't been successful he could claim is just one of those things.

I suppose you could try it though; nowadays with online reviews, people are more keen to keep people happy so they don't get a bad review.

Lolaloveslemonade · 09/10/2020 11:16

No salt needed here either.
We live in a soft water area. No limescale build up on any appliance. Might be very different in different areas.

Lolaloveslemonade · 09/10/2020 11:17

Happy to hear how many people chuck the tablet in! I thought we were just sloppy...

CayrolBaaaskin · 09/10/2020 11:18

The compartment always breaks. Just chuck it on the bottom

KatieB55 · 09/10/2020 11:18

I throw the tablet on the floor too!

Downwithcovid · 09/10/2020 11:23

I always figured mumsnet was overly populated by tossers.

This thread is my proof 😂

billy1966 · 09/10/2020 11:23

@Justkeeprollingalong

The soap compartment stopped opening on my dishwasher years ago. All that happens when it opens is that the tablet drops out into the bottom of the dishwasher. I just throw the tablet in and shut the door. Works perfectly.
This. Wouldn't dream of paying someone to fix that.

The spring mechanism apears to be gone that is connected electrically.

I would leave it alone!

HaggieMaggie · 09/10/2020 11:23

I do use the dispenser on the dishwasher but i always put washing powder in the drum with the clothes, it keeps the drawer clean and scum free.

Teasgonecoldagain · 09/10/2020 11:28

@iluvgab

This is like the cancel the cheque thread.

Chuck the tablet on the floor!

I thought this too, it made me laugh how more and more people were suggesting to chuck it on the floor.
Bouledeneige · 09/10/2020 11:31

Yeah I don't quite get the logic of these repairs. All the compartment does is let the soap fall out into the machine. So it's not essential at all!
I'm not sure I'd need a repairman to explain that.

VanGoghsDog · 09/10/2020 11:45

How do you "use more salt"?

I just fill up the salt reservoir, I have no control over how much is actually used each time!

Tlollj · 09/10/2020 11:49

Another tablet thrower here. Works fine

ittakes2 · 09/10/2020 11:51

Sorry when our soap compartment stopped opening I just put it the slot but didn’t shut it. My current dishwasher has an option of putting the tablet in the top tray. What is taking the piss is why he didn’t tell you to do these other options and no need for him at all.

knittingaddict · 09/10/2020 11:52

The last dishwasher tablets I bought don't really fit in the compartment and won't dispense when the door thingy opens. Like other people I just throw it in the bottom of the dishwasher. I can only assume that the compartment for the tablet is an unnecessary gimmick and it's no big deal if it doesn't work at all.

PigletJohn · 09/10/2020 11:53

The amount is adjusted by setting the Water Hardness during installation.

The harder you set it, the more it regenerates, so it uses up the salt quicker.

To see how to adjust it, you'd have to look at your instruction book.

Some Bosch and similar brands have a tiny blue dial, top left corner or the door frame recess.

Yeah, I know, as I live in a hard water area it's already set high.

The advice up thread was "use more salt". That's not possible.

(Also a thrower, btw)

terriblyangryattimes · 09/10/2020 11:58

Another one who drops the tablet in thr cutlery basket here. Flap is fine but this is less fiddly!

DianaT1969 · 09/10/2020 12:00

How old was your machine OP? Not under warranty, so more than 2 years?
Google was your friend here - you would have seen in 2 mins that you can just throw the tablet in.

Sorry but you wasted your own time and money.

oakleaffy · 09/10/2020 12:23

@PigletJohn

A website where the trader pays to be listed is not a recommendation site, it is an advertising site.

If the trader can have unfavourable reviews removed, or if his family and friends can publish glowing reports, it is less than worthless.

So so true.

Trades pay to be on there.

If someone leaves a bad review, the Tradesperson can and does get the reviews removed.

Google reviews I think cannot be removed by the tradesperson.

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 09/10/2020 12:26

a dishwasher repair man once recommended to me that it always works better if you just throw the tablet on the dishwasher floor

Oneandzero · 09/10/2020 12:32

Re salt

How frequently do you have to add?
My bosch has only “told” me to do it once in 1.5 years

AriettyHomily · 09/10/2020 12:36

Would have been cheaper in the long run to buy a new one surely. Wouldn't .occur to me o call a repair man to a dishwasher

VanGoghsDog · 09/10/2020 12:38
