To be furious and ask for my money back

My dishwasher broke a few days ago, with the soap compartment not opening during the wash and I called the best rated repair person in the area, as listed on a well known trades rating/checking website.

Since then its been 4 visits, a total of £211 parts and labour, replacing the entire soap/rinse aid dispenser and much of the internal wiring. Yet still the soap dispenser door does not open during the wash, seemingly no matter what their repair person tries/replaces so far.

The repair person seems very laid back about it all, not understanding how inconvenient and time consuming this repeated visits are. He keeps doing a possible fix, putting the machine on and leaving. Then I have to call him once more and say yet again whatever you didn't hasn't worked, so come back and try again. No apology from him and no acknowledgement that this is poor service.

At this point I'm furious, out of pocket and AIBU to demand my money back for incompetent work, if the repair person cannot fix it tomorrow on their 5th visit?

We always put our tablet in the cutlery basket.

bouncydog · 09/10/2020 06:51

When dispenser stopped working repair shop told me to put tablet on floor and not waste money getting them to fix it!!

Imknackeredzzz · 09/10/2020 06:56

Yep again I never use compartment, Is there a reason you were wanting this fixed? I know it’s ideal but not really necessarily if it’s otherwise working fine

Downwithcovid · 09/10/2020 07:02

The dispensers are crap. I didn’t even realise people used them.

Just throw it in

Oneandzero · 09/10/2020 07:05

Is he the ONLY dishwasher repair person in your area?!
Why else would you call him back... 4 times!

Lolaloveslemonade · 09/10/2020 07:06

I’ve never used the soap compartment. It remains open and empty every time I use the appliance.
I also chuck in a dishwasher tablet, close it and press the start button...

AgentProvocateur · 09/10/2020 07:07

I didn’t realise people use the dispensers. I’ve always just thrown it in, which is what my parents did too.

userxx · 09/10/2020 07:09

I've always used it, doesn't the dishwasher do a pre wash before firing the tablet out?

Beautiful3 · 09/10/2020 07:09

You shouldn't have paid him until it was fixed. I put mine in the cutlery basket, it works fine.

charmsofasimplelife · 09/10/2020 07:11

I just throw the tablet in too!

Really wouldn't waste my money getting something like that fixed.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/10/2020 07:13

We also were told to put the tablet in the cutlery basket. The soap dispensers were apparently made for powder not tablets

agradecida · 09/10/2020 07:14

My dishwasher only cost £200. I can't believe you've spent more then that repairing the dispenser thing. (I know that's not what you asked, but what this threat has become).

We too just throw the tablet in, but now I'm thinking about it, I can't even remember if it's the dispenser in this machine that is broken, or the last machine we had... or maybe they both broke.

GnomeDePlume · 09/10/2020 07:30

When we got a new dishwasher it didnt even occur to me to put the tablet in its little hatch. Just threw it straight into the bottom of the dishwasher as we had been doing with the last one. Actually I'm not sure we used the hatch on the last one either!

Thinking about it, the last time we routinely used the hatch was back in the days when wash, salt and rinse aid were all in different compartments.

Longdistance · 09/10/2020 07:31

It’s a waste of money getting a dishwasher repaired. Just buy a new one.
My five year old dishwasher broke recently, I just bought a new one for £340. They’re not built to last tbh. I’m on my 5th dishwasher in 18 years of owning them.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 09/10/2020 07:37

Gosh, just throw the tablet in or buy a new machine!

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 09/10/2020 07:42

sounds like a common phenomenon!
chucking the tablet on the floor of the machine, i think that is all that happens anyway

ScrapThatThen · 09/10/2020 07:42

It's honestly much better not using the dispenser.

Did you get any washing up liquid in the dishwasher by mistake? That ruins the wiring gradually.

RationalOne · 09/10/2020 07:43

I put my dishwasher tablet in with the cutlery holder - it's very simple and it works just the same?

DivisionBelles · 09/10/2020 07:45

Our soap dispenser is very temperamental. We just chuck it in and switch on. Absolutely fine.

Twickerhun · 09/10/2020 07:45

All these people saying just buy a new one - what a waste of resources. It’s much better for the planet to use a work around (our dishwasher tablets also go in the cutlery holder) or repair.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/10/2020 07:46

You spent how much??? You let him come back how many times?
You won’t get your money back, cut your loses now, could have bought a new one with installation for that cost

ImSleepingBeauty · 09/10/2020 07:52

£211?! Wow.
YANBU that it hasn’t been fixed.

YABU to have spent anything at all when you could have just lobbed the tablet into the bottom and shut the door.

Baaaahhhhh · 09/10/2020 08:05

My dishwasher won't work unless the dispenser is clicked shut, so I have always used it.

Also still going after 15 years....to the pp on their 5 th dishwasher in 18 years is terrible, I would be incredibly pissed off.

Baaaahhhhh · 09/10/2020 08:08

A little tip from my repair man, always use extra salt if you use just tablets. The tablets are not sufficient to keep the pipe work lime free. He must be right.....as ours has lasted all that time.

Florencex · 09/10/2020 08:08

My soap compartment stopped opening recently too. Now I put the tablet in the compartment without closing it and then quickly shut the dishwasher door. Seems to work.
