To wonder why my toddlers hair won’t grow

My daughter is 3 and is pretty much still bald! She has a small amount of hair but not enough to even tie up, like I said she’s practically bald, why won’t it grow? I know it’s just hair but she starts school next year so it’s starting to worry me about teasing etc, I don’t know anyone that has a child of 3 that’s basically still bald. AIBU to wonder why it isn’t growing?

If you run your fingers through her hair, does it pull out easily?

Givemeabreak88 · 08/10/2020 20:46

No it doesn’t seem to come out or anything

Have you spoken to any health professionals about it?

My 2.5yr olds hair was slow to grow (especially compared to his older brother) but not for as long as your DD. I think his hair growth picked up a bit around 2 years but he was very thin and short until then

gretagreengrapes · 08/10/2020 20:51

I only started to grow hair after my 3rd birthday, I looked like a bald egg up until then! Don't worry about it it'll come!

Givemeabreak88 · 08/10/2020 20:52

My nephew asked me if I’ve taken her to the dr over it but I thought it sounded silly I just assumed it would grow but nothing

I know it sounds counter intuitive but get it cut regularly. DS rubbed a bald patch off the back of his head as a baby so I got it all cut off. DD's hair was dreadful but she was a bit too old to shave it all off so I had it cut every 4 weeks when she was 3. It thickened up, her hairline grew at the front and she spent many years with beautiful long hair and donated 13" to The Little Princes Trust when she was 11.

ForeverBubblegum · 08/10/2020 20:53

I was apparently still bald at that age, and had my first hair trim (fringe only as it had just reached my eyes) at age 4. I went on to have a normal amount of hair, it's actually relatively thick.

Looking back at school photos, I had a short Bob type length when I started school, but with curls. It wasn't a great look, but I don't remember it being a problem at the time, and wasn't the worst 90's hair style on the class photo.

IdkickJilliansass · 08/10/2020 20:57

It’s normal I promise

ellieboulou33 · 08/10/2020 20:59

Could be lose or short anagen syndrome.
My 5yo dd has it, diagnosed under Great Ormond St, unfortunately no cure but I'm told some children do start to get hair growth around 8-9.

It's very hard as my other dd has waist length hair.

Givemeabreak88 · 08/10/2020 21:00

It doesn’t seem normal??, I know loads of toddlers none have been like this? Even at the park etc she’s the only bald one Confused

Could you post a picture with her face obscured obviously?

gretagreengrapes · 08/10/2020 21:03

@Givemeabreak88 if you Google why is my toddlers hair not growing you get loads of old posts (mainly on netmums) of people saying the same thing about their 3 year olds so you're not alone.
I think if you stress about it you'll make DD stress about it too.

Givemeabreak88 · 08/10/2020 21:04

I’ve never mentioned it to her

My dd started reception with hardly any hair- still only 10cm ish long all over. Was the only one, took til year 2 to reach a ‘normal’ length, was honestly the least hair I’d ever seen on a child. She’s a teenager now and it’s normal, thicker than average, slower than average growing rate but otherwise normal hair.

FourPlasticRings · 08/10/2020 21:10

My cousin was like this! We've got pictures of her bald as a three year old, and my DD has very slow growing hair- practically bald until 2. Even now (2 and a quarter) her hair is shorter than DH's.

I think maybe it happens more in boys than girls but people don't care when it's in boys . My cousin's hair started growing after she turned three and she's had a perfectly normal amount of it since about four.

I also know one little girl whose hair is as short as my DD's but her mum gets it cut that way on purpose. It's easier to maintain and far more practical for an active toddler than longer locks are. If it weren't a gender stereotyping thing, most would probably have short hair as a toddler.

In short, I wouldn't worry yet, OP.

Cavagirl · 08/10/2020 21:10

DN's hair was exactly like this. She looked like an ill child from a charity advert with a hat on Confused
Now aged 8 she has a full head of curly locks. Some kids are just slow.

BertieBotts · 08/10/2020 21:11

My sister's hair was like this, everyone thought she was a boy until she was about 6. It's lovely and long now :)

Seeline · 08/10/2020 21:14

Is she blonde?

Lougle · 08/10/2020 21:14

DD1's hair was like this, too. She was 5 before it could go up in to a pony tail. She's almost 15 now and has fine hair, but a good amount.

bananamonkey · 08/10/2020 21:15

My cousin was like this too, her son is still totally bald at 2.

BettyOBarley · 08/10/2020 21:18

Watching with interest as my DDs hair is like this and she's 7 next month. It's never grown past her shoulders and hasn't grown in length for 2 years. It's so thin and wispy as well, like baby hair still. I keep wondering whether to speak to the GP but it seems such a minor issue, I do worry she might be deficient in something though.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 08/10/2020 21:23

My little girl was like this. She's 5 now and has a decent length, below her shoulders. However, her hairline is very high so it still.lools a bit weird. Ive noticed it only grows during the summer, but regular trims to shape it make it look less thin and straggly. Is your Dd's hair curly by any chance? It seems to be more curly in girls with blonde curly hair. Good luck, it will get better!

deste · 08/10/2020 21:24

DGD very blond is exactly the same, very fine and hardly any at the sides. I did notice she had a couple of hairs growing towards her eyes so assuming it is now starting to grow.

Don’t do as someone said and get it cut because that will do nothing, it will grow in its own time.

goldpendant · 08/10/2020 21:29

DD is 4 and the same. Tonight she got sad because she's started school and says she thinks she looks like a boy.

I've also contemplated seeing the GP but a bit of googling tells me it's relatively common.

DDs hair does pull out quite easily, eg with hair bands and stuff which someone up thread queried - is that more of a concern?

Ohtherewearethen · 08/10/2020 21:30

@TheTeenageYears - most babies get a bald patch at the back of their heads but hair usually soon grows over it. It is a myth that cutting hair makes it grow faster or thicker. Your daughter's hair growth is entirely normal and nothing to do with you getting it cut every four weeks.
OP, I don't have any advice but I know of three children who were bald until the age of three. Two are friends of mine I've known since we were all babies, one is the daughter of another friend. She had very little hair starting school in reception but by the start of year 1 she had it in plaits down to her shoulders. If you are concerned, go to the doctor but it isn't particularly unusual to have very little hair still at three.
