To wonder why my toddlers hair won’t grow

My daughter is 3 and is pretty much still bald! She has a small amount of hair but not enough to even tie up, like I said she’s practically bald, why won’t it grow? I know it’s just hair but she starts school next year so it’s starting to worry me about teasing etc, I don’t know anyone that has a child of 3 that’s basically still bald. AIBU to wonder why it isn’t growing?

This is it, reassuring to hear it’s not that uncommon every toddler I seem to see has long hair!

In my non expert opinion her hair looks quite normal, it doesn't look like there are any thin patches or anything like that to worry about. I'm sure it will grow longer soon.

DueNumberTwo · 08/10/2020 21:45

Are you washing it regularly and using a good conditioner / oil on it too?

TwoShades1 · 08/10/2020 21:46

My step daughter had very little hair. It couldn’t really be tied up until she was around 4 ish. And it was mostly only the back that had any length. She continued to have very thin hair until at least 8. She is now 10 and it seems more normal now.

Haworthia · 08/10/2020 21:47

I’ve seen girls in Reception with heads of short baby-type hair - I don’t think it’s all that unusual.

S111n20 · 08/10/2020 21:50

Doesn’t look really thin/bald patches which is a good sign. I’m sure it will come in time. Maybe use a shampoo which includes Biotin. Certain foods can also help hair growth.

Givemeabreak88 · 08/10/2020 22:17

It’s nice to know she won’t be the only one! I wash it once a week maybe that’s not enough? And I use coconut oil

I'd try rinsing with water in between to help moisturise it. You could try castor oil too just to see if there's any difference. There's a chance her hair could be growing but the ends breaking before it gets a chance to keep the length so keep it as moisturised as possible.

Notimeforaname · 08/10/2020 22:26

My friends daughter was the same til almost 4 op! Then her hair grew quickly. She too used coconut oil with plenty of head messages!

Notimeforaname · 08/10/2020 22:29

Extra virgin olive oil is good too. Just a little bit.

Lougle · 09/10/2020 07:03

She's got really tight curls - I bet there's a lot of length there that you just can't see. Her hair looks lovely. Be patient Smile

ShinyGreenElephant · 09/10/2020 07:09

My oldest had really wispy curls like a baby until she was 2.5 - by 3 it was thicker but still looked more like a 1yo hair. Shes 11 now and has thick golden ringlets past her bum- everyone comments on it and you would never ever believe she was such a baldy baby! My youngest is now nearly 2 and still has very short hair - I'm not even slightly concerned this time. Long hair will come soon enough and its an absolute pain when it does!

Twilightstarbright · 09/10/2020 07:12

Do you have any other concerns? Does she eat a balanced diet? Could be low iron or a vitamin deficiency? I'm speaking from my own experience once my anemia was sorted out my hair grew loads!

I was a bald toddler/preschooler. Now I've got a normal head of hair but it's fine and doesn't grow quickly.

rorosemary · 09/10/2020 07:15

To me it looks like she has a lot of hair all over, just quite short. One of my nieces still looked like a half shaved punk at that age. At least your dd's hair is a nice coverage. It will grow in time.

Givemeabreak88 · 09/10/2020 09:49

Thanks everyone I feel a lot better now! Just have to give it time, good to know it isn’t just her.

As hair grows from the inside, I don’t see how washing it more would help. I’m sure it will catch up, they’re all so different.

I knew a child around the same age who had very, very short hair too. Less coverage than your little girl. It’s growing well now (now 5).

justilou1 · 09/10/2020 10:20

Are her teeth normal? If her top teeth are curved upwards at the bottom, or extremely chalky I would be concerned. There are a few genetic conditions that cause issues with hair growth and teeth, but I must say, I don’t think your daughter’s hair looks like it grows in these patterns as it covers her hair evenly (no bald patches).

DDiva · 09/10/2020 10:29

My daughter barely had enough hair to tie up when she started school at 4. Ot was curly too so looked short.

Now at 7 she has thick hair down to the middle of her back. I think somewltines it just takes a while to get going.......

TheTeenageYears · 09/10/2020 13:09

Hair grows best when it's healthy, cutting hair helps to keep it healthy and therefore aids growth so cutting it won't make it grow any quicker but it will keep it healthier than not cutting it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 09/10/2020 13:26

A friends daughter had nothing but a few thin whispy bits of hair until she was six or seven - she looked like a Betsey Clarke drawing.
Her mum had quite thin hair, so I assumed it was genetic.
By the time the daughter was in her twenties she had really thick, long healthy hair - it was stunning - don't worry about it.

Yesterdayforgotten · 09/10/2020 13:34

Aww I'm sure it will grow as she gets older op. My Grandma used to say you can change your hair but you cant change your face... Shock it is so true. I'm sure she is a lovely little girl and it's only hair and it will get longer. Infact mine took ages to grow; I saw a photo of myself at about 3 and it was in a bob and I said to my mum 'oh you had it cut like that' and she said no it just never grew!' I was mortified! I ended up having really long hair so it did grow eventually,.it just took it's sweet time!

AramintaLee · 09/10/2020 13:40

I think it's just her hair type OP. She clearly has a full head of hair... it's very even and not patchy. You can tell she's going to grow up with the most beautiful curls. It might just be slow growing.

EggCups · 09/10/2020 14:04

Another baldy child here. I was bald, just a few wisps until I was five years old. My mum. Took me to the GP who suggested shaving what little bit I had off, but my DM refused.

It took a little while but by the age of 8 I had relatively normal amounts of hair. As a adult it is thick, glossy and my best feature.

I don't know how much truth there is in it but someone once told me the later your teeth and hair grow, the better they will be. I was also pretty gummy until I was a year old, and aged 40, I am yet to need a filling.

Scarby9 · 09/10/2020 14:10

My brother only had a few whisps at that age, and they were so blonde as to be invisible. He also had no apparent eyebrows.
By the time he started school, he had a full head of hair and beautiful arched eyebrows.

PossiblyPattio · 09/10/2020 14:34

Your DD is adorable OP!! Such cute chubby cheeks Grin
It looks normal to me. Not patchy or anything, and with her hair type it's probably longer than you think.
