New job and I need a day off?!

Just started work over a week ago and my car has gone and broken down on the motorway today. I was a bit shaken up as I was on my own they have taken it to the garage and it's having the work done tomorrow.

I don't have a number to call so I have requested a day off using the work app and I have written in the notes what's happened. I don't live close to work and I have to leave at 6 in the morning so I need my car.

OH says I should of lied as it just sounds bad.

Have I done the wrong thing?

Personally I would have got an uber/asked a friend or DP/asked a neighbour/asked a work colleague for a lift

Thehop · 07/10/2020 17:09

Can’t you get there any other way? Train bus taxi favours etc?

IndecentFeminist · 07/10/2020 17:10

You don't have any contact details for where you work?

whatsfordinneer · 07/10/2020 17:12

I've just moved to a new area and just started work in a town away from where I live. I don't know the neighbours and I don't know the colleagues.

An Uber would cost me an arm & a leg there and back.

No they haven't given me anything with numbers on I have the old managers email on the app who hired me but she left just before I started.

You've been honest and requested the time, which I suppose might be unpaid. You couldn't help breaking down.

Your OH is a lying twat who only seems to care about how things look.

ramblingsonthego · 07/10/2020 17:18

I had to have a day off 2 days into a new job when my child broke their leg. I was very embarrassed. These things happen. Can you work from home? Do some online training or induction stuff?

vanillandhoney · 07/10/2020 17:20

It's awkward, but sometimes these things happen.

I would have gotten an uber or taxi if I could afford it, though.

LIZS · 07/10/2020 17:25

In the longer term interest of keeping the job and goodwill it might be worth sucking up the cist and extra hassle of uber/public transport. Surely you have contact numbers for hr from the job application or could google it?

Pinkshrimp · 07/10/2020 17:41

What time did you request the day off on the work app?

I would assume that if the place is closed, so that you couldn’t google the number and phone the main switch board, then no one will se the request and, as it can’t actually be authorised, there is the chance they won’t be happy but I do think it’s nester to be honest.

What lie did DH think was acceptable to tell?

Pinkshrimp · 07/10/2020 17:42

Better not nester!

whatsfordinneer · 07/10/2020 17:46

The shop closes at 10:00 manager may not even see it. I'm going to email the HR email see if they can give me a number.

Jeez that’s a bit harsh.

HyaluronicHippo · 07/10/2020 17:49

Does your oh drive?

whatsfordinneer · 07/10/2020 17:55

Yes but we share the car.

OP posts:
LIZS · 07/10/2020 17:56

Is the branch number not on google? Check alternative routes first.

whatsfordinneer · 07/10/2020 17:57

I've found an email for my line manager on yammer I will give that a try first.

OP posts:
Oneandzero · 07/10/2020 17:57

I would have done pretty much anything not to have to not go in to work.
Even if I spent more money on a taxi than a day’s work!

Dyrne · 07/10/2020 18:04

I don’t think you should have lied, but I think you should be trying a lot harder to get in touch with someone to explain what has happened.

(Also your DH has given you terrible advice - bailing because of a sick child unfortunately may give some line managers the impression that you’re unreliable and will be constantly off with child related things. A broken down car is more of a one off you can assume won’t happen too often. It’s shit that those assumptions exist but they are there unfortunately for a lot of employers).

milienhaus · 07/10/2020 18:07

Sorry, I think you really should have got a taxi ... that would definitely raise eyebrows where I work!

bethany39 · 07/10/2020 18:08

Are you talking about taking tomorrow off OP? Or have you just not shown up today?

Racoonworld · 07/10/2020 18:09

You may have to take it unpaid if you haven’t accrued leave yet. Would a taxi cost more than a days wages?

whatsfordinneer · 07/10/2020 18:10

Take tomorrow as holiday the app says I have 32Hs to take.

OP posts:
AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 07/10/2020 18:10

I think you should have gone to work by bus/train/taxi/Uber, even if it meant a lot of faff and a lot of expense. It’s your first day - nothing much short of hospitalisation of you or your child should keep you away from first day in a new job
