I’ve had Loads and they had one be painful. I’m surprised that most other people find them painful.

You’re surprised other people have different experiences to your own?

SprogletsMum · 07/10/2020 11:37

I had one in my labour with ds4 and it was at the base of my thumb.
It was annoying as fuck in labour but once he was born it kept catching every time I held him and then it was really sore.

Backofthenewt · 07/10/2020 11:38

You're surprised people find it painful to have a large needle inserted into their flesh?

CodenameApollo · 07/10/2020 11:39
Hmm

Do you feel pain when you cut yourself? If not there could be something not quite right with you?

averylongtimeago · 07/10/2020 11:41

And your point is?
So you don't find it painful, well others do.

ExclamationPerfume · 07/10/2020 11:41

I don't find them painful. I find them a pain in the arse when they put them in the crook of your elbow. I had one in for a week once. They too it out and it had bent into an L shape.

unmarkedbythat · 07/10/2020 11:41

Why are you surprised that other people experience things that you don't? Were you under the impression that only things that happen to you happen at all?

Ohalrightthen · 07/10/2020 11:41

Why are you surprised that people find having a big needle stuck in their arm painful?

QuestionableMouse · 07/10/2020 11:42

It depends.

Of course they can be painful!

starfish88 · 07/10/2020 11:42

It does depend. I had an iron drip after I had DS. It hurt so much I was screaming. The nurses kept telling me it didn't hurt that much and I had to point out they had seen me do 5 hours of induced labour with only gas and air and at no point had I screamed like that so to believe me when I said the drip hurt. They discovered the vein had collapsed so the iv fluid was pooling in my hand. I would say that hurt!

Hobnobsandbroomstick · 07/10/2020 11:42

Different people have different pain thresholds, also area and size make a difference. A yellow cannula in your ACF (crook of your elbow) probably won't hurt, but a grey one in your hand might smart a fair bit. Also depends what drugs you are having through it as some can sting more than others.

SquitMcJit · 07/10/2020 11:43

Well then you are lucky.

I am practically phobic about them now after several horrible experiences. Apparently, my veins are hard to find. And one time I had one put in incorrectly which did a very scary thing to my hand. And really hurt.

Amazing that people are different, eh?

Mauhea · 07/10/2020 11:43

I'm not a fan! I've been cannulated on 3 occasions and every time it feels like someone driving a tiny spear in to the back of my hand... I guess because they kind of are... The first 2 remained uncomfortable until removed, only the 3rd didn't cause any bother (very thankful as it was in place for several days while I had IV antibiotics)

Yes! If I wanted a superpower it sure as hell wouldn’t be the ability to not find cannulas painful.
notso · 07/10/2020 11:44

Well done babes, your amazing 😍😍

peboh · 07/10/2020 11:44

I've had a few, and they're incredibly painful for me. However I have really bad veins, so always end up with a blown vein when getting them in.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 07/10/2020 11:45

Good for you.

I had them in both hands when I was in labour with ds1. Not only were they painful but I ended up with such big bruises I looked like I'd been in a boxing match but forgotten my gloves.
Whenever I've had them they hurt, don't stay in and leave bruises. When i donate blood that leaves huge bruises too.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 07/10/2020 11:45

I think watching the doctor slam in a cannula in my just born via c-section nephew’s little hand will stay with me forever.

sapnupuas · 07/10/2020 11:45

Good for you!

022828MAN · 07/10/2020 11:46

When I had my daughter, the midwife blew both my hands attempting to cannulate me, she went straight through both sides of the veins. It was agony and I have a high pain threshold!
The anaesthetist had to come and cannulate my arm instead.
I'm not sure what you find surprising about people having different experiences to you. Are you quite sheltered?

Hazelnutlatteplease · 07/10/2020 11:46

Depends how easy it is to get a needle into the dead centre of your vein.

If you are a lucky soul for whom nurses find it easy to hit a vein then you are in luck. If nurses find it hard (and some underlying conditions exacerbate this), the are less likely to get a direct hit and its more painful.

Some veins are easier locations than others. A cannula in the vein that runs over the ankle into the foot can be agonisingly because of the proximity to the joint. Even if its in spot on any movement can jar it and cause pain.

The cellular hole blankets they used to have in hospitals were nightmares because one wrong move and the holes caught and tugged on the cannula

The way they strap them now with a bandage is also much better. The old plaster on the top method was a nightmare for them moving

Cauterize · 07/10/2020 11:46

I once had one on the side of my wrist, right at the bottom of my thumb. It hurt like an absolute bitch
