Hi
Aibu to think this is ridiculous or am I behind in the time’s. We have been discussing amongst friends what’s on the kids wish lists this year, they seemed take back by the fact by daughter had asked for the kindi kid dolls and furreal kangaroo ( and some other toys like hatchimal l fairy )
They said they were not buying theirs toys this year as they have grown out of them ( same year in school )
Is my child a young 7 year old ?
She has asked for a camera and watch for her birthday but she is still v much in to toys !

My DS still likes his dolls. He's nearly 11. I don't think he'd admit it to his friends though.

anon2334 · 06/10/2020 16:59

Sorry pressed the wrong button ! I completely think yanbu.. 7 is still very young and toys and dolls are good for a few years yet

2bazookas · 06/10/2020 17:02

Of course 7 is a perfect age for dolls and toys !!!!!
Let her be a kid for as long as possible; childhood is all too short

timetest · 06/10/2020 17:04

I’m really surprised that a 7 year old has outgrown dolls and toys. It’s sad their childhood was so short.

mbosnz · 06/10/2020 17:04

@QuoteSomeonetakemebackto91, lol, my daughter got very lucky that her Dad got a very bad case of the guilts about how much he was in the states for work that year, missing her junior prom, and all!

froggygoneacourting · 06/10/2020 17:07

Gosh I played with my beloved Sylvanian Families till I was at least 12.

It's good for children to be able to enjoy being children, and not feel pressured to grow up too soon.

Namechangearoo · 06/10/2020 17:12

I read your OP as “funeral kangaroo” and was a bit concerned about what that was Grin

HowFastIsTooFast · 06/10/2020 17:19

Oh OP of course she's not too old! I'm 36 and still regret the day we gave away my Sylvanians HmmConfused

Mrsfrumble · 06/10/2020 17:20

DD is 8 next week and is getting Playmobil. She’s obsessed with dragons, so is getting one of the How to Train Your Dragon sets. She also plays with Sylvanians and My Little Ponies, and long may it last! Let them be little.

BluebellsGreenbells · 06/10/2020 17:22

My daughters never took to dolls or teddies or dressing up.

They much preferred the construction toys and board games.

Everyone’s different!

MollyButton · 06/10/2020 17:24

I had my hair cut by a hairdresser who was relieved her 7 year old hadn't asked for toy for his birthday. I thought it was very sad - 7 year olds should still be playing with toys and playing in general - make believe not just computer games.

DotForShort · 06/10/2020 17:27

YANBU. I really dislike the push to make children grow up too soon, to encourage them toward video games and mobile phones rather than toys and imaginative play. (And then the same people are often oddly invested in wanting their 13-year-olds to believe in Santa. I don't understand it at all.)

7-year-olds are young children. Many (of course not all) children of this age love dolls. And for all children, non-screen-based play is essential.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/10/2020 17:30

Of course 7yos play with toys. Playing with toys is essential for brain development and processing emotions. I've no idea why people think their dc "growing out of toys" is some mark of achievement.

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/10/2020 17:34

My niece is 12 this December and she has still put dolls on her Christmas List.

HellsBills · 06/10/2020 17:35

Whaaaat? 7 too old? My 11yr old had 'toys' for her birthday, requested a specific stuffed cuddly toy. For her 10th she asked for a lot of 'my generation' doll clothes and accessories. I really do think this push to grow up so young comes from the parents, I've seen it with my childrens' classmates and find it so sad.

Cam2020 · 06/10/2020 17:36

Bloody hell, 7 is just a child - definitely not too old for dolls and toys. What are these other 7 years doing then?! Imaginative play is really good for children's development.

Crystal87 · 06/10/2020 17:36

My 7 year old has never been into dolls, not because she's too old but because she has no interest in them at all. She does have electronics and play games online but is still massively into toys, mainly anything to do with horses, unicorns and Hatchimals.

Emma785 · 06/10/2020 17:52

Definitely not too old wow what are these mums buying instead i phones and make up 😂 my 8 year old still plays with her dolls i say let kids be kids for as long as they want to be

dottiedodah · 06/10/2020 17:53

I think its a shame that 7 year olds cant play with dollies! Your DD sounds great to me! Ignore these people and crack on with buying some lovely dolls .Still like dollies and loved playing at Sindy /Barbie with DD when she was small!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/10/2020 18:06

My DDs Yr3 class is definitely still into toys.

Marilla1966 · 06/10/2020 18:07

I’ve bought my 7 year old a Kindi Kid for Christmas. I’m encouraging playing with dolls for as long as possible. X

SpaceOP · 06/10/2020 18:08
@mbosnz ha my daughter is obsessed with American girl dolls she wants me to order the ones you design but Im a bit like 250.00 for a doll is a bit steep seen as she doesn’t understand that’s all she would get 🤣
My daughter accepted a knock off version from Argos!!! She really thinks its the same thing! Grin but admittedly, she's 5.

SpaceOP · 06/10/2020 18:09

I think it's really sad that people are so anti toys for 7 year olds. Why can't it be both? I bought DD a soft toy the other day which was really cute and DS asked me why i hadn't bought him one. I felt so bad but as he hasn't asked for such a thing for ages, I just hadn't thought to. So I promised to buy him one next time we were out. He's 9.

formerbabe · 06/10/2020 18:10

I have a theory that the trend for immaculate homes fuels this as many mums are pleased to have no toys lying round ruining the aesthetic.

teaandcustardcreamsx · 06/10/2020 18:11

YADNBU Confused I played with dolls till I was 12 and hasn’t done any harm
