New starters aibu

Been in job 1 year. Love it, am good at it, only positive feedback. At last review was told they would extend contract with aim of being permanent soon, just once they know finances.

They've had a great year, no issues with Covid, so much that they are more than doubling the team. Great I think. 3 brand new permanent staff.

They've just renewed my contract until end of year only.

Obviously I'm happy to have a job in current climate, bit also a bit gutted. The worst bit, is that I now have to train these new starters in my job. The one I won't have in Jan! Is my employer shit or aibu?

Did you not apply for the permanent posts? That’s what would have been expected in my workplace. Some people like working on fixed term contracts so they have flexibility, so it wouldn’t have raised eyebrows where I am if someone in your position hadn’t chosen to apply - we would assume they weren’t looking for a permanent post.

Didn't you post about this the other day? I didn't think it was legal to make a temp permanent without advertising? Surely you should've applied for the permanent vacancy, I'm guessing they think you're not that invested. On the other hand a vacancy has just come up that I think one of my temps would be perfect for, I made sure to ask if she'd seen the ad and let her know I'm happy to be a reference, it's in another team but she's great and it's what's best for the organisation. She'll still have to go through the standard application process with internal and external candidates.

No issues with Covid? You were furloughed throughout lockdown. I think that’s a major issue from a business point of view.
When you applied for the permanent post did they tell you why you had not been selected? If not ask for feedback on how the interview went and what you can do to improve going forward. If you didn’t apply then you wouldn’t be hired?

I’m getting deja vu too. If they’ve employed 3 new people to do your job then it doesn’t seem likely that they’ll renew your contract beyond Dec. Look for a new job.

Why didn’t you apply for a permanent post?
