Final redundancy meeting today after 14 years service.
Manager said 'This isn't as bad or as hard as it is for the others we have had to make redundant. They were on a lot more pay and hours than you.'

Very. Hope you manage to get another job soon.

OldEvilOwl · 05/10/2020 11:30

Yes of course its unsensitive. 14 years is a long time to work somewhere. What did you say back?

PinkAndFabulous · 05/10/2020 11:30

Thanks. I am shocked by what he said and wondered if it was just me being oversensitive

Absolutely not, what a stupid thing to say. They have no idea what your wage and job meant to you or your family. There is no care for loyalty or longevity, everyone is just disposable now. I'm so sorry this has happened to you.

VillageGreenPreservationSoc · 05/10/2020 11:31

Not, you're not being unreasonable. I suppose there is a scale in this sort of thing - at first blush, I might find it harder to make redundant, say, a man in his fifties with a mortgage, than a guy in his twenties still living at home with no dependants. Still: presuming that you to some extent enjoyed and/or needed your job - I'd say he's a twat.

PinkAndFabulous · 05/10/2020 11:32

I said

' I feel that is irrelevant. I have dedicated 14 years of my life to this place and it is incredibly difficult going through this process. '
He just looked embarrassed Confused

Sorry , I meant they were very insensitive. Not you for feeling like they were. Reading my post again.

Mmsnet101 · 05/10/2020 13:23

I sort of get what he means, but it should never have been said to you. I'm sure it was meant as a comfort as you'll not have as much worry about money /getting another job.

When making redundancies it's hard not to think @pinkAndFabulous is young, skilled and getting a high amount compared to some others so it's tough but shouldn't be as bad for her etc. Doesn't make it any nicer or easier and of course they've likely got no idea of your situation!

What he hasn't taken into account is that the money you receive should be in line with what you are used to earning and therefore doesn't make much difference that its more than Sally from accounts or whatever!
