To ask what your favourite long waterproof coat is - and where I can get it?

Just that....

Rainy days.... lots of dog walking.... Longing for a robust but relatively stylish (ok, just a little bit) waterproof coat that I can throw on and will keep me wonderfully dry.

What's your favourite?

And if its still available, where would I buy it?

Thanks

I'm with you and would love to find this holy grail if anyone can advise! I just want a warm bum and dry shoulders!!

Imaystillbedrunk · 04/10/2020 11:31

Oh and if it's warm enough to watch an hour of kids football I'd be delighted

ToastyCrumpet · 04/10/2020 11:32

I’ve got one from Seasalt. Waterproof and breathable. They have variations of the same coat every year.

Chilver · 04/10/2020 11:32

After an hour and a half watching hockey in the rain, I too am looking for this holy grail!!!

longtompot · 04/10/2020 11:36

I have a Seasalt Planter coat which is lovely and warm and waterproof. Though, the waterproofing has worn off a bit after 4 or 5 years so I'm having to do a wash in proofing every few months.

vanillandhoney · 04/10/2020 11:36

The problem with waterproof coats on their own, is that any water will roll off and soak your trousers, so you'll still get wet and cold. So unless you're wearing an ankle length jacket, you're going to get wet unless you dress appropriately on your bottom half.

I say this as a professional dog walker - long coats are useless unless they're teamed with waterproof trousers or long enough boots to cover your legs. I wear a Rohan Ascent jacket, Dry Roamers (also Rohan) or Regatta overtrousers, plus cheap ASDA wellies. It's not stylish but I've never come home wet, and I regularly do four hours straight of walking in the torrential rain.

AnonUser2018 · 04/10/2020 11:36

I always go back to Joules long waterproof coats.

longtompot · 04/10/2020 11:37

Oops, Plant Hunter coat.

ToastyCrumpet · 04/10/2020 11:37

I get round this problem by wearing leggings. Works for me.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 04/10/2020 11:38

My Merrell coat still looks newish after 10 years

golightlytoday · 04/10/2020 11:38

Another vote for sea salt. I got the Janelle coat last year. Was on a dog walk in that torrential rain this week in the woods / open fields.

I got a petite as 5 foot 4" and it comes just below my knees.

Wear with sports leggings and I was dry after an hour walk. It's not too hot. And 100% waterproof. But warm. I just wear a long sleeved running top under.

Not huge pockets but can fit poo bags, treats, and a tennis ball in each pockets. Then has 2 inside pockets for phone and keys etc.

The hood is great. Although I tend to wear a hat as don't like hoods.

StanfordPines · 04/10/2020 11:39

Mine is a Jack Wolfskin I got from Cotswolds a few years ago.

RonObvious · 04/10/2020 12:17

I got a Craghoppers coat in the sale last year. £250 reduced to £100. It’s amazing! Seriously waterproof, warm inner bit can be unzipped and removed in the summer. Was in Debenhams yesterday, and they were on sale again, but reduced to £87. If you have one locally, it might be worth a look - they’re not on the website though (just checked).

HeronLanyon · 04/10/2020 12:22

Bought a long brasher lined parka last year - a bit like their Hilldrop’ style. Totally water piped and warm. If I’d thought I’d have gone for something where the lining could zip out and the hood zip off so it’s been a bit less flexible than I’d have liked but when it’s the right coat it’s great.
When proper walking I wear a shorter waterproof wind proof jacket with layers under and, if stormy, waterproof trousers.

Maryfloppins · 04/10/2020 12:23

A dry robe. Not stylish but will keep you super warm and dry. Love mine .

VeryLittleOwl · 04/10/2020 12:47

Driza-Bone full length wax jacket with a pair of boots should keep you covered.

LakieLady · 04/10/2020 12:53

Another vote for the Seasalt Janelle coat. It's the best coat I've ever had (and at my age, I've had a fair few!)

Warm, waterproof and windproof, it's good and long, the pleat at the back has press studs that can be undone if you're clambering over stiles etc, zips on pockets to keep stuff safe (and good sized pockets, too, room for loads of dog treats, poo bags, keys, phone etc).

I bloody love mine. And if you buy one and register the purchase online, you get a lifetime guarantee.

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/10/2020 12:56

Jack Murphy Doubt whether it's stylish - I've long ceased to recognise what is stylish if, indeed, I ever knew. But totally waterproof.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/10/2020 13:06

I like that one in purple MereDint. How long are the sleeves? I can never find jackets that cover my wrists.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 04/10/2020 13:09

I needed this thread! Thank you all!!

runninguphills · 04/10/2020 13:12

I have this coat in black. I've had it for 14 years and it still looks brand new. I've just come back from a very rainy dog walk and it's never let a drop of rain through - it never has the whole time I've had it. It also has a nice flatering shape and the length is to the knee.

It's called a Merrell Wakefield coat. I'm not sure if they are still available but one did come up on ebay when I googled it.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/10/2020 13:15

I'm looking for this type of coat. Do any have pockets that can hold an OS map?

Websites are light on this information and I'm probably going to have to order online as there seems to be nothing in shops near me.

HeronLanyon · 04/10/2020 13:41

barbara I’ve found that shorter waterproof walking jackets which pack into their Inner left big pocket tend to accommodate os maps in that pocket but it’s tough trying to work these essentials out online. My faithful old Rohan jacket which has seen me through many a gale out in the cliffs suddenly this summer became less waterproof. I too am on the hunt for that detail.
