To ask what your favourite long waterproof coat is - and where I can get it?

Just that....

Rainy days.... lots of dog walking.... Longing for a robust but relatively stylish (ok, just a little bit) waterproof coat that I can throw on and will keep me wonderfully dry.

What's your favourite?

And if its still available, where would I buy it?

Thanks

@HeronLanyon

barbara I’ve found that shorter waterproof walking jackets which pack into their Inner left big pocket tend to accommodate os maps in that pocket but it’s tough trying to work these essentials out online. My faithful old Rohan jacket which has seen me through many a gale out in the cliffs suddenly this summer became less waterproof. I too am on the hunt for that detail.
I used to work at Rohan! No need to buy a new jacket :)

If you reproof it with Nikwax you should get plenty more use out of it. Wash it with Nikwax as per the instructions on the bottle then cool tumble dry it on the lowest setting. I reproofed my jacket this summer and it's totally waterproof again now.

EasyAndy101 · 04/10/2020 13:54

When I want to be fully waterproof I tend to use a shorter hardshell jacket and waterproof trousers. Longer coats that are waterproof just act like funnels to your trousers as they have such a massive area for collecting rain

I wear a coat when it's cold and dryish. Mine is a North Face mcmurdo, I've never been cold wearing it, it's massive overkill for the UK but being cold makes me want to die. It's also very waterproof and in the event it does rain, because it's not flush with your legs it doesn't tend to drip down onto your trousers

My OH has a Merrell coat that she loves, it's kinda dufflish and despite being a fabric outer it's amazingly waterproof, warm and looks pretty decent. She's had it years and they don't do exactly the same model but one posted upthread is similar

I bought a Berghaus Rothley in black, and loved it so much I ended up buying it in beige as well! Properly goretex/waterproof with taped seams etc. and it's longer at the back for proper bum and upper thigh coverage. Plus it's a lovely flattering shape Grin

vanilla thank you for the reminder. I actually have nikwax. Doing this has always felt like a potential mistake which I would regret - I have images of my washing machine Being damaged in Some unspecified way (a bit like the time I thought id use a kettle descaler - not good experience!).
Just maybe I need to read instructions more closely !
You’ve given me another nudge to do this.
Having said that that jacket is the best I’ve ever had in a long walking jacket life. Loads of great design decisions.
Very embarrassingly I only realised this summer (only after around 10 years frequent use) that the zipper could zip up from the bottom too. Well that made a big difference on the more climbing stretches of rough walks. Just maybe I should sit and carefully inspect all new purchases eh ?

unchienandalusia · 04/10/2020 14:32

I have a Barbour for when it's cold but at this time of year I wear a joules cape. Always come home dry and never overheat.

Angrymum22 · 04/10/2020 14:41

Jack Murphy Malvern with Dubarry Boots, waterproof from top to toe and very wind proof and warm for watching rugby. If it’s not raining I have a 35 yr old Barbour which teamed with cashmere jumper under it beats any puff jacket for style hands down. I have Barbour recoiled every ten years or so which keeps it windproof and waterproof.

Angrymum22 · 04/10/2020 14:42

Re oiled not recoiled.

neversayalways · 04/10/2020 14:43

The problem with waterproof coats on their own, is that any water will roll off and soak your trousers, so you'll still get wet and cold. So unless you're wearing an ankle length jacket, you're going to get wet unless you dress appropriately on your bottom half

Absolutely this.

GeordieRacer · 04/10/2020 14:43

Seasalt plant hunter. Kept me dry and warm walking the dog along the north east coast in a gale yesterday.

ReallyLazy · 04/10/2020 14:44

Barbour/Barbour International.

Pricey but the quality is there and it should last many years so if you can afford to invest, do.

Spanglybangles · 04/10/2020 14:48

I have the Fat Face Snowden jacket. Not super long, but covers bum, has loads of pockets and teamed with long waterproof boots, does the job nicely

I love the Regatta Roanstar coat. It is so cosy and waterproof. Plus it is very reasonably priced.

The Lands End women's squall coat. There are several styles.

Thankyou!!! What brilliant replies ... going to have a happy time taking a look at all of these on line! Yes Im a leggings person when walking to solve the dripping onto trousers issue.

Baleno long waterproof coat. Bought initially for riding on the moors in winter, but is now my go to properly wet day waterproof. Comes down to mid calf (I'm 5'5) and fits beautifully so is pretty flattering.

Otherwise it's just a Berghaus jacket with waterproof trousers in my pocket in case.

Wibblypiggly · 04/10/2020 15:34

I want a super long big fat quilted waterproof coat. Does that exist?!

I have one. It's fab. Not quilted, but very warm lining.

BeansMeansWines · 04/10/2020 15:43

Another vote for Seasalt. Bought mine on eBay.

I wear a Barbour in colder drier weather but I’m unimpressed. Maybe I treat them harshly. I’ve had it 6 years, done a DIY wax after 2 and sent it off for rewaxing and new pocket (my fault, I burnt it) and a new sleeve last autumn. Orvis tried to Talk me into a new one as it would have been about £50 more than the repairs.

The new sleeve is fraying and now the other sleeve is ripped. It badly needs another wax.

I’ll still plan to wear it with the ripped sleeve. But I’m unimpressed.

It honestly won't do any damage - just follow whatever instructions are on the Nikwax bottle and then you can always wash and dry your jacket as normal. I wash my Rohan stuff on 30 with non-bio power, and then cool tumble dry it. That goes for waterproof stuff as wall as their more "normal" gear.

Their waterproofs really are good. My Ascent has been going nearly five years now with zero issues whatsoever!

PrincessButtockUp · 04/10/2020 18:23

Mine is from Land's End. It's lightweight, padded, waterproof and rated down to about minus 17C. I've worn it in windchill of down to minus 10C and been comfy. Cost about £140 about 8 or 9 years ago and still going strong.

MissConductUS · 04/10/2020 18:39

Another LE fan! We all have their winter coats. We have some hard winters where I live.

CatsForLife · 04/10/2020 18:46

Didriksons all the way for me. Their latest range is really nice.

MissConductUS · 04/10/2020 18:47

Re durability, the zipper broke on DH's LE winter squall parka. It was 25 years old and had been through the wash dozens of times. He had it when we first started dating.

He rang them to complain and they gave him a $40 voucher to buy a new one, which is really what he was hoping for.

The coats are almost indestructible and the customer service is tops.

Pepsioften100 · 04/10/2020 18:51

Jack wolf skin parka is the dream- shaped so it barely gets any water on your legs like others are saying. Massive hood on it, massive pockets- love it 😍
