I read many threads where op asks for experiences of others and thread is a long list of experiences posted and everybody ignores experiences or others or it's a discussion thread and again everybody posts their own view and ignores the others unless it's aibu and there's the chance for a bunfight

Is nobody on MN interested in anybody else? It seems like people want to have their say and not have interest in others

Well that proved my point perfectly.

Because people are replying to the ops request, they arent reading other peoples replies because they're just there to do what's asked?

I have no idea what you're talking about! The whole post doesn't make sense to me, and I've read it a few times to try make sense of it.

Yeah it is a bit of a confusing post.

It would make more sense if it was talking about threads asking for a discussion not threads specifically asking for experiences.

Scweltish · 04/10/2020 11:08

What proves your point? I have no idea what you’re talking about?

This was in my OP:

So, people post experiences because they’ve been asked to post experiences... not seeing the problem.

Of course people are interested in other people. This isn’t the medium for it though.
In my experience of forums, you start off just posting your own stuff, and the interaction is minimal. Then, you start to recognise posters, and look out for the ones who make you laugh, or have a similar issue or point of view... the interaction gets more conversational and personal and then - you’ve made a friend. But that takes time and - in my opinion - a smaller board than AIBU.

I just came off a thread where someone says they bought a second oil tank and did the poster know how cheap oil was right now? And a reply back and forth about price... there are lots of mini conversations like that.

I think that you’re not noticing those AND having an unrealistic expectation of the medium.

Your follow up post is a little abrasive - a Grin would have made all the difference to it. People are more likely to engage with you online if you seem to have a sense of humour rather than aggression.

Can someone decipher? I have got a massive hangover, but I’ve read it 3 times not and I’m getting nowhere. Maybe I’m still drunk.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/10/2020 11:11
Confused
Eistigi · 04/10/2020 11:15

Thanks @Elsewyre

I'm glad it's not just me!

OP, are you complaining that you don't get enough mini conversations in a thread?

Cocomarine · 04/10/2020 11:17

I do think @spottybitch is on a different MN to me though, as I see quite a lot of interaction between posters on threads 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Scweltish I think OP means things like you mention your hangover, but then other people just post their replies in a vacuum to that. I think she means we don’t show interest in others. So... how come you were drunk last night? Wink. (and possibly this morning?!)

BubblyBarbara · 04/10/2020 11:20

I think you are on the wrong site if you don't want to read people's experiences and opinions

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 04/10/2020 11:22

When you look at how often the quote function is used, or an old style bolded quote, you’ll notice the interaction.

Quite often il scan through the OP’s posts and reply before reading other people’s, so it may not seem that I’ve taken anyone else’s words on board when I first post. There’s not point me replying on page 6 of a thread to a comment I read and agreed with on page 3, as the conversation has moved on, so often I just put in my own two penneth and then read the rest. It also stops you from being influenced in your opinion in the first instance. Then if someone else’s post makes you think twice you can contribute again.

I really don’t see the problem you describe.

Cornettoninja · 04/10/2020 11:23

MN is a lot busier than most averages forums but the expectation isn’t really for chats in the traditional sense. Forums are more like commentary I suppose.

If your statement doesn’t particularly inspire anyone to comment directly that’s fine. Plenty of people just read through threads without commenting once, members and none members.

I agree it would be nice to feel like your not just talking into the nothingness sometimes but I also know that ‘like’ buttons for posts have been largely decided against by the MN community consistently over the years.

Cassilis · 04/10/2020 11:27

I totally understand what you mean, OP. I think you get so used to most people not responding to your posts, even though you try and acknowledge others’ posts, that you sort of give up and just answer the OP and not bother acknowledging many others.

The other thing is many posters only acknowledge posters that they perceive to be long standing members of MN. Unfortunately MN is not immune to popularity contests.

MJMG2015 · 04/10/2020 11:42

I don't find that, at all - the opposite is more common.

Other websites are available if this one doesn't suit you 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cassilis · 04/10/2020 11:43

@MJMG2015 what a spectacularly unhelpful response 🤦🏻‍♀️

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/10/2020 11:45

It's hard to have a discussion when the board moves so fast, though, OP. As a pp said, you may agree with a post on page 3, but if you haven't come to the thread until page 7 is up, there's little point in replying. And a lot of threads depend on differing experiences of things, not everyone piling in saying 'yes, I agree'.

turnthebiglightoff · 04/10/2020 11:46

Are you drunk, OP?

kursaalflyer · 04/10/2020 11:49

If I wanted a discussion I would post in Chat, Feminist or Philosphy boards. People can then have a discussion and read posts apart from the op. If I want advice I will read all the posts and reply but don't expect posters to necessarily interact with each other. If I post and no one replies I assume they are not interested or can't help.

WorraLiberty · 04/10/2020 11:50

This is why I think we need a 'like' button but MNHQ keeps saying they'll revisit the idea periodically.

I think each time the subject comes up though, more people are in favour of the idea for this reason.

WorraLiberty · 04/10/2020 11:51

I mean to acknowledge a post you agree with 3 pages back.

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 04/10/2020 12:04

I would guess noone replied in the first instance because you posted a vague title that did not pique interest in anyone browsing active conversations. If you had enabled voting I could have just clicked to indicate my thoughts. I am interested in others, but can't say this is the most riveting thing I've read recently.
