I always loved this movie. Haven’t seen it in years and now I’m watching it again it’s clearly two people in relationships start an online affair, get super involved and then dump their partners to be together under the guise of romance.

I think I’ve spent too much time on mumsnet or maybe I’ve gotten more cynical as I’ve gotten older.

Thoughts? Would the lovely Kathleen and Joe be absolutely slated for their behaviour if they posted on mumsnet!!

I haven't seen it....if the two people who get together via email do not have kids, then it's fair enough. Not all love stories are neat and tidy. Doesn't mean they're not romantic.

It's worse than an EA. he basically stalks her. They should get flamed on MN. Sometimes I wonder if this film would get made these days, I hope even Hollywood is a bit more enlightened...

Yabusux · 03/10/2020 06:44

Imagine Joe telling his mates, "I'm in an online relationship, I know who she is and I've spied on her when I stood her up in a restaurant; she has no idea who I am - we have met in real-life but I've never let on. When she finds out she's going to be so charmed!" Sorry, rant over.

Thiswillbeaneverlastinglove · 03/10/2020 10:34

@Yabusux I’d actually forgotten about that bit. She was all delighted it was him even though he had been messing with her head telling her her mystery man was married then emailing her as the mystery man saying oh how dare you ask me if I’m married. The whole thing is totally messed up!!!!

Im raging. I love a good Tom Hanks Rom-com.

I think now if meg Ryan told her story mumsnet would tell her the guy was gaslighting her and to run a mile 🙈

I used to love the film (and The Shop Around The Corner) but rewatched it last.

Jesus, Joe is soooooo manipulative! Absolute psycho.

Yes I'm so glad there's a thread because I started watching it again yesterday and got so annoyed I had to switch it off! I know their partners were flawed, but they both come across as actually quite sweet and supportive while Joe and Kathleen were swanning around NYC high on their emotional affair like smug arses!

Ballstothis148 · 03/10/2020 11:47

He ruins her life!! Ruins her business gleefully and then as she’s really down he gaslights her and then she’s supposed to love him?! Awful!! And meg Ryan is so cute in it, and the scenery is so cute, love the little shop... all ruined!

Ballstothis148 · 03/10/2020 11:48

And absolutely to emotional affair Angry

pandafunfactory · 03/10/2020 11:50

I was horrified when I watched it. He destroys her life!

So it’s fine for my DH to cheat on me as we don’t have kids?

Joes partner was awful, as highlighted in the lift incident.

I used to love the film too, but he was manipulating her and ruined her family business too boot.
